Henry, that Puyol “Flop,” and Those Missing Awards
We found out yesterday that Thierry Henry has been passed over for yet another award. This one FIFA Player of the Year, in favor of finalists Ronaldinho, Cannavaro, and, yes, Zidane. (Does anybody really think that Zidane had a better year than Henry? So why is he on the list and Henry’s [...]
Congratulations to Captain Patrick Vieira on His 100th Cap
Yes, this is close to two weeks late. I kept intending to post it, but then I would get distracted by unsubstantiated transfer rumors and sweet-yet-somehow-troubling pictures of Thierry Henry.
But I do want to take the opportunity to congratulate Bleus captain Patrick Vieira for receiving his 100th cap in the France-Greece game on [...]
Ballon d’Or Goes to Somebody Who’s Not Henry
It’s official. The Ballon d’Or goes to Italy’s Cannavaro. (Who I actually like. Even though he’s Italian. Don’t tell anybody.) Yes, he probably deserves it. But so does Thierry Henry, who polled third after Cannavaro and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
As I see it, though, there are three bright sides [...]
Another Day, Another Set of Transfer Rumors
To keep you up to date on where some of your favorite Bleus may (or may not) be playing after January, here are a few transfer rumors.
First, that Trezeguet-to-Lyon rumor is SO yesterday. Jean-Claude Blanc of Juventus says, “Trezeguet will not leave in January.” Can’t get much clearer than that. [...]
Trezeguet to Lyon?
So it’s no big secret that Lyon’s in the market for a striker because all of theirs keep breaking. (Fred? Out. Benzema? Out. Govou? Ditto.) Rumor has it that they’re interested in one of my favorite (hopefully not former) Bleus, David Trezeguet. To the tune of 30 [...]
New FIFA rankings: France is 4th?
Well, the new FIFA rankings are out. The results (or at least the only ones I care about):
1. Brazil
2. Italy
3. Argentina
4. France
Hmm. I’m questioning their ranking criteria. Let’s think about this:
France vs. Brazil. How did that last matchup end? Oh, right. France won.
France [...]
Want a Titi Hug?
Occasionally in my journeys ’round the internet I will find things that are sweet. Touching. And somehow just…kind of…wrong.
It brightens my day to bring these things to your attention.
River Plate Should be Kissing Domenech’s Boots
It’s kind of a given that, in general, clubs hate Raymond Domenech.
The one current exception to this rule is River Plate, Argentina. They are (or should be) at this moment kissing Domenech’s boots for getting the Gonzalo Higuain hype machine going less than two months before the January transfer window.
The news reports (scroll down [...]
Materazzi to France? Not a Good Idea
It seems that Marco Materazzi wants to come to France to promote his new book, “What I Really Said to Zidane.” Problem is, France has said that they are unable (and unwilling) to expend the effort and money which would be necessary to guarantee his safety.
(Aren’t this guy’s fifteen minutes up yet???)
Hey, [...]
Race, Immigration, and Black,Blanc,Beur
I was thinking about writing on the race issue and Les Bleus anyway because the topic seems to come up frequently. But it’s always nice when some total idiot like French politician Georges Freche comes along and says something to make my job easy.
From AP: “Georges Freche, from the southern Languedoc-Roussillon [...]
Podcast: World Cup 2010 Group B Preview. "You hear that, Mr. Anderson?"
World Cup previews. They can be a bit dull and not particularly helfpul when it comes to predicting who will qualify from each group. One reason for this is that they focus too much on things like players and not enough on the really good things. Like quality of national [read more]
FIFA Has $1 Billion in Reserve Funds, But Still Doesn't Appreciate Clever Advertising
Two bits of news today. Read them both, and then decide for yourself whether the two are related.
The first story is that FIFA made a profit of $196 million in 2009, and now has a reserve cash fund of more than $1 billion. One billion dollars in the vault. Which makes FIFA sound a little like a Bond villain.
The second story is that FIFA have come down hard on South African budget airline kulula.com for what FIFA calls "ambush marketing". Basically, Kulula isn't an official World Cup sponsor, and as such is not allowed to suggest otherwise. Which makes perfect sense. However, Kulula - famous for its slightly left-field advertising campaigns - recently ran an ad in the South African Sunday Times newspaper on February 28th stating the airline was the "Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What". The World Cup 2010 DJ Playlist (Musical Lineup)
(That kid immediately gets some sort of WCB Order of Merit.)
There's going to be a rather large party in South Africa this year. Some call it the World Cup.
But before there can be the real party, there must be another party beforehand. Because it's not really a party unless it's sandwiched by eight other parties of no importance whatsoever. And judging by the musical lineup for the World Cup pre-party, this will be no different. [read more]
FIFA World Cup 2026: Colombia!
There are many things which FIFA isn't very good at. One of them is putting anyone in the organization in front of a microphone, or allowing spilled words onto a page into the hands of the media. Another is running the world's football organization.
So FIFA, after handing this year's World Cup to the country with the second highest per capita murder rate, are looking to outdo themselves by sponsoring a World Cup bid by the world's most dangerous country, Colombia. Hip hip. [read more]
