19-year-old French Forward David Ngog signs for Liverpool

Liverpool have signed 19-year-old French forward David Ngog from PSG. He’s allegedly “lightening quick,” but I’ve never seen him play myself. If he can get a game for Liverpool, I’ll be watching closely.

If it’s not already clear, I should clarify that I’m overly fond of England’s Premier League, the Arsenal in particular, and brimming with excitement about the run-up to the new season. If an up-and-coming player like Ngog can break into the Liverpool first team; dare I say it: become a regular in the first 11; Les Bleus would have quite a player to call on. If he’s good enough to take over Torres’s spot, I’d be beyond excited, and could find myself ordering a replica jersey.

More likely, even if he’s very good, which I hope he is, he’ll get an odd game and a rare start. He’s had limited chances at PSG, 8 league starts last season, scoring one league goal, which makes it all the more intriguing that Liverpool wanted to bring him in for a reported 1.5 million pound transfer fee.

Ngog’s cousin is France and Lyon defender Jean-Alain Boumsong.

With France not playing again for almost a month, in an August 20th friendly against Sweden, we’re down to the real hard-core France supporters on this blog, and I’m feeling the liberty to venture off topic: What do hard-core France types like yourselves have on tap for club-football spectating?

Hey guys,

I have been following this site and the insightful commentary for over a year. I am Les Bleus supporter from 82′ and have been a die hard fan since.

Born in South Africa and raised in Toronto Canada I am proud that the French NT has so much diversity, which is one of the main reasons I love the team.

Hopefully we enter a new era where the new generation will take us on a great journey!

Ossie – Thanks a lot for leaving a comment. Your comments are always welcomed here.

Benjamin and Jennifer – My wife’s family lives in the Bordeaux region, and if Les Girondins could push on from last season, it would be brilliant. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Bordeaux (and the other French sides) will do in the Champions League this year.

Michel-Olivier – I’m having trouble figuring out what the N stands for. All I’ve gotten so far is that, “it’s an African thing.”

Michel-Olivier, the latest word on Thuram is that they’re still waiting on the final test results. But my guess is that his playing days are probably over. Too bad, too. I’d love to see him do one final season at PSG with guys like Giuly and Makelele.

Interestingly, Thuram’s name has come up for the spot at the Conseil fédéral that was vacated by Platini when Platini took over as head of UEFA. Escalettes says Thuram is interested. It would seem to be a great match.

Michel-Olivier, I could completely support everything you suggest except the Speedo. I think there should be a no-Speedo clause in his retirement contract.

Actually, there should be a no-Speedo clause in EVERYBODY’s retirement contract. Or maybe in their LIFE contract. Break it, you die.

David Ngog is half cameroonian half french. He grew up in France, his dad is cameroonian and his mom is french. The french squad is filled with stars, so i reckon he’ll choose to play for cameroon alongside samuel eto. They could form a formidable partnership

I think it is fair to say that N’Gog could chose Cameroon. He was poorly treated in Paris by the supporters in the Parc des Princes, as they saw him as another overrated French U-19 international, though really, N’Gog has declined since he was very strong when he was U-17 international. And these days, even if one has been involved in the Clairefontaine setup a while, it doesn’t mean that one will choose another country. Issiar Dia was a French U-21 international and was straight out of Clairefontaine, though due to competition at his spot (Ribéry/Gakpé/Obertan/Gouffran), decided to choose Senegal. I think the same thing then could now happen with N’Gog, though he could decide to choose France, based on his cousin, Boumsong, his close friendship with Gabriel Obertan, and if he does get opportunities at Liverpool.

henri saivet might play for senegal since its his birth country, to all french supporters, saivet is not similar to titi, he is more similar to etoo. however obertan is very similar to titi.

Saivet is good friends with Mamadou Sakho (we can admit Sakho also has dual nationalities, though it’s quite apparent he will be a Bleu someday), and it is likely that he will be teaming up with Obertan at Bordeaux eventually (keep in mind Saivet is only 17). He is also actually the youngest in Bordeaux’s history to sign a professional contract, and he’s been a mainstay of the French U-16/U-17/U-18 and now this season, U-19 teams. All this leads to suggest that, except if he does not pan out as expected, he will be a Bleu.

It’s interesting that you, Michel-Olivier, think Saivet isn’t much similar to Henry and is more similar to Eto’o. I admit there are differences between Saivet and Henry, though I think that when you consider the similarities in their ability to go and attack from the wings (Eto’o doesn’t do that, really) and their free kick abilities (I don’t know how Eto’o does at those), I think one can make a case.

I’m happy to be back and as always, enjoying the discussion, though Obertan to me is more similar to a Cristiano Ronaldo type than an Henry, though either way, he is definitely one of the more exciting guys that France has on the rise.

An interesting side note, did you know that Obertan was once on the books of PSG, as well as being trained at Clairefontaine, before he signed with Bordeaux?
