A Note About Spam Filters and Comments

June 11th, 2008 | By: Laurie | 9 Comments »

A few of you have gone through the frustration in the last day or two of having your comments sent to the Spam bin. Our spam filter, SpamKarma, has also done this to me on some of our other blogs, so I know firsthand how frustrating this is.

But don’t give up! We want to hear from you!

The problem seemed to be that the filter was set to flag people who comment more than a certain number of times in a short period (several hours or days.) In other words, it was not set up for tournament times, when all of us want to read and write and comment on everything that goes on, and the more frequently the better!

I’ve gone in and readjusted the spam settings, telling it to allow more comments from individual commenters before rejecting anything. This should fix the problem. (While, with luck, not allowing actual comment spam through.)

If it doesn’t solve the problem, I want to know so I can fix it! If you’re having problems, please drop me an email at laurie[at]theoffside[dot]com.

Thanks for your patience, and we ARE looking forward to hearing from you!

Spam has ruined the net experience for all of us and there is nothing we can really do about it. It is very unfortunate but at least we have learned to cope with this nuisance.

Thanks Laurie for fixing the problem and pulling those two that didn’t go through.
There is a 20% chance of rain for tomorrow at bern, partly cloudy
and a little chilly 7C, which only means that we’ll be enjoying
an attacking football with end to end action.
Right now the Croatians are driving their cars up and down the streets
in downtown Toronto, waving their flags and honking their horns.
By the way that was a very very bad penalty call in the Poland game.

[…] Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve had this problem. Enter Six Apart. When signed up and tested, I couldn’t leave comments on my own brand new TypePad blog (tdavid.typepad.com). This was around Christmas time two years ago and it took a week or so to find out that the reason my comments were being blocked was because makeyougohmm.com was listed on an old spam service. […]
