Alou Diarra – the only change – game on now

April 1st, 2009 | By: jeff | 123 Comments »

It’s Luyindula again, wide right.

Alou Diarra is in for the suspended Toulalan. That’s the only change for France from Saturday’s match against this same team, Lithuania.

Try Europe1.fr for match audio in French.

Gourcuff is “very present” early in the match.

Henry, alone up front and captain again.

Sagna centers for Henry, corner.

Ribery…no.

Updates in the comments.

That’s 6 points from 6 during this patch of qualifying. The improvement since Gourcuff came in is continuing.

Full Time 1-0

well, france won but there are a few things to take from this game and one is set pieces, all of them completely gone to waste

True, jeff — is it too much to hope that what we’re seeing is a gradual coherence and improvement in this team?

Knowing Domenech, it probably is.

Enuf of that. France move up to 2nd place now, right? Whew! Glad that’s over, but Ribery was wonderful to watch.

True ahmad — like Arsenal, France almost never score from set pieces.

Alex, they were, they were! They were trying to hurt several of our players, but esp. Ribery.

Funny, I didn’t see this post till after the game was over. And as I said on the other post, I really, really liked Gignac today.

My favorite quote from Domenech on the game:

“Quant à Gignac (pour sa première titularisation), il a joué avec ses qualités naturelles. Le jour où il ne tente pas, c’est qu’il est malade.”

sorry ahmad, but Arsenal scoring off set pieces can be counted in one hand. You can name a few games and that’s it. It’s a constant problem for us and it’s something very often commented on by gooners and pundits. We rarely look dangerous when we get a set piece. That’s why a player like Bendtner–whose finishing skills leave much to be desired–are so important because once in awhile he can pull off a header from a set piece. We rarely score goals from them. We also don’t have very good crossers. Sagna and Clichy are terrific players but they’re lousy crossers.

I think Gignac should be a mainstay on this team. I like his game a lot.

As sandrahn stated the number of set pieces they’ve scored could be counted on one hand vs. the chances they’ve had, 4 0-0 ties in a row tells the tale for the Gunners, but no worries as

C E S C I S B A C K !!!

Sagna had much better crossing ability last year as supposed to the duds
he’s sending in the box easily handled by the keepers.
Keep the faith, 10 games left and it’s wide open.
