Djibril Cissé to RBNY?!?

April 13th, 2007 | By: Laurie | 4 Comments »

I doubt that this has even the slightest possibility of being true, but The Mirror reports that Red Bulls New York has expressed an interest in the fragile striker Djibril Cissé.

LIVERPOOL’S unwanted striker Djibril Cissé is a target for New York Red Bull. The French striker’s move to Marseille is on the rocks after his loan spell turned into a disaster. But the MLS team want to recruit Cisse before the US ‘window’ shuts at midnight today. Red Bull have the cash to land the 25-year-old in a loan deal though a full-time switch is unlikely.

I suppose stranger things have happened, but this doesn’t seem likely. Cissé broke his leg in a pre-World Cup friendly last June. (It was his second leg break. If you’re interested, videos of both are all over YouTube, but be forewarned: They’re ICKY.) He just returned to playing for Marseille in December, where he had a brief spell of skill, but he hasn’t accomplished much recently. Rumors area that Liverpool would be willing to sell him to Marseille, but Marseille doesn’t seem to be biting. Perhaps this rumor is designed to drum up interest in Europe for the summer transfer period?

On the other hand, he’s not ancient, and he’s fast, and he does have some interesting skills. There’s a chance he might fit into MLS play. And people would buy tickets just to see his hair change on a weekly basis. So who knows?

Hi Laurie

Just to add to the MLS transfer rumours, now The Guardian is reporting LA galaxy have made an offer to Zidane.

Rach, I’ve been covering this in my LA Galaxy blog, but perhaps I should cover it over here, too, now that it’s looking like it’s coming from somewhat credible sources.

Yours is the most credible link so far. First I got it from Bulgaria, then Germany, then Italy, then the rumor site Tribal Football… Now the Guardian! I’m moving up in the credibility world.

You have NO idea how happy this would make me. I live 1500 miles from LA and I would still so buy season tickets!!

zizou coming to mls would be hugely controversial among a lot of his fans, football punditry in general, etc. lots of fans don’t want him to go back on his word again, esp. playing for a low level league like mls. I have mixed feelings myself — I think it would subject him to lots of nasty reaction but I also want American audiences to see why he’s considered such a brilliant player, and I want to see him play again. *sigh* I wish he’d done as Arsene Wenger said a few months before the wc last summer. Wenger said zizou should not have announced his retirement before the wc because you never know what can happen at a world cup. Zizou has been quoted as saying that he reconsidered going back on his retirement pledge because he didn’t want his last image to be the headbutt but he felt constrained by his retirement pledge, since he’d already gone back on it before. If he’d just kept quiet about it before the wc, he could’ve gone back to madrid to finish out his contract.
