Dunne gets stuck-in: Extraordinary pre-match comments on Domenech

From the Guardian:

Ireland defender Richard Dunne said, “You can see the reaction of the people at the tennis (Paris Masters), when they put his (Domenech) face on the big screen. The whole place just booed him and his own players laughed at him.”

Extraordinary.

There’s Domenech trying to enjoy tennis when a stadium full of people start booing him; and even his own players start laughing at him.

Did Dunne see this all on the telly or was he there? Did they show the players laughing at Domenech on the big screen?

Few people could elicit boos by having their face put on the big screen at a tennis match. Dunne’s description of events is compelling, and if true, I can’t help but want to hear more about this extraordinary ostracizing of Domenech. Is there YouTube footage of this event? Poor Domenech. It sounds like things went all wrong for him.

The subtext to Dunne’s quotes is that he himself doesn’t hold Domenech in high regard, and considers his participation in the World Cup playoff as a bonus for Ireland.

With everyone counting him out, will Doms be the comeback kid, and prove them all wrong?

When he commits those defensive howlers for Ireland as he did for Man City, we will see who get booed.

Hardly that extraordinary. In fact, rather benile when you consider what’s been said and written about Domenech over the past 2 years.

Oh, and Ireland will cheer Richard Dunne no matter what. ;-)

I’m a France supporter but frankly the FFF idiots and Domenech bring this on themselves so I have no sympathy. The entire country (France) has wanted the FFF to appoint another manager since the end of the 2006 wc and yet they keep this guy in the job merely because he’s part of their old-boy network. They prefer to protect their political turf rather than work to help the fortunes of their national team.

And as for Dom…a manager of a team the stature of France, with so many brilliant talents, putting TWO DMs against the freaking FAROE ISLANDS, has earned every bit of ridicule he gets.

Dunne’s just responding to Domenech’s perceived derogatory comments about Ireland being the “England B team” …

Instead of kicking a man when he’s down, I prefer Evra’s fighting spirit … France’s Man of the Match on Saturday?

I do like Evra, even though he plays for Man United.

Domenech was not taking a stabbed at Ireland when he referred to them as “England B team”. He said that because mostly all of Ireland’s players are based in England. In the press conference, he was constantly saying great things about Ireland and was overdoing it IMO. Complete overreaction from Dunne and Ireland. SMH @ the fact that they need a reason to get fired up for a WORLD CUP PLAYOFF.

The quieter it is out of Clairefontaine, the better. The worry is Toulalan, who makes an indelible impact when he’s on his game. It would be good to have him at that level Saturday.

Reuters’ probable 11 is the one I would pick from the 24, to win in Dublin:

Hugo Lloris; Bacary Sagna, William Gallas, Eric Abidal, Patrice Evra; Lassana Diarra, Jeremy Toulalan; Nicolas Anelka, Yoann Gourcuff, Thierry Henry; Andre-Pierre Gignac.

Personally, I absolutely adore Raymond Domenech – he is Ireland’s only hope of beating France, in my opinion.

Hey, there’s lots of good stuff in the Irish press about the upcoming matches, not least of which is this very interesting, somewhat against-the-grain anaysis of Les bleus by the current Faroes skipper and former Republic of Ireland NT manager, Brian Kerr:

I am worried about the match, but the more I think of it the more I have some cautious optimism. Even with Domenech at the helm and getting booed…I do think the Dunn’s comments are reflective of how many France supporters feel. It will be interesting to see if he finds another way to pull the rabbit out of the hat…I am starting to think he will –

I think fans are in a win-win situation. If France win then they make it to the World Cup. If they lose then they get rid of Domenech. Unless France does something extraordinary at the world Cup I don’t see any reason why he would stay.

Jeff,
What’s really funny in that whole press thing that was blown out of proportion, is that it was a bad translation of Domenech’s words, when he said “c’est l’Angleterre bis”; BIS means like an exact replica (in French we also use it as “encore”), of course whatever foreign press translated it as B, meaning the bench team. It was great for firing up the whole Irish nation (who showed up a little overcomfident too, he he).
It is not unlike the fake fabricated quote “from” French swimmer Alain Raymond that was repeated ad nauseam to motivate Phelps and the US team (we will break the US 4×100 team like a stick).

Thanks for that translation, Doume. At first I when I read the comments, I was just as curious about the incident as I was about Dunne making his comments.

There was a lot of emotion yesterday, and there was a hint that there might be a post-match brawl, perhaps involving Dunne and Henry.
