Escalettes: No one, except Guy Chambily, asked for a debate on maintaining Domenech

The voice of the French public was a lone voice on the FFF council this morning, as Guy Chambily couldn’t even get a vote on whether to remove Domenech. According to FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes, Guy Chambily received no support from other council members when he requested a vote in this morning’s meeting.

A stark contrast to Chambily’s estimate that 90% of the council agreed with him.

Escalattes did admit that the image of the French team needs improving.

The FFF is now poised to be showered in glory if Domenech is able to reverse the trend of woeful France performances and lead Les Bleus to World Cup victory. The World Cup has a bit of a reputation for crowning champions who entered the tournament in disarray, and France fits that description nicely.

It would be nice to get France’s image rehabilitation underway with some commanding performances in friendlies. A spark could turn this team around. Sacking Doms would have been just such a spark, but now, it’s going to have to be something else – a player who steps forward and refuses to let the team play like shite, or a single match where everything falls into place, and France start playing football again.

It could happen.

chambily is the one person who will be able to say “i tried” after france crash and burn in the wc. he might even survive the great purge of the FFF when everyone else gets thrown out for corruption.

Ribery is set to return. Hopefully he can ignite France’s fire.

Hmm, not sure about Ribery providing the spark. Afterall, he has a lot of things to overcome- transfer drama, injury, lack of playing time (due to injury) etc

I think the spark will come from someone young on the team. Benzema might peak at the right time for France- he shouldn’t be too tired and he is improving for Madrid. And other young players as well such as Gourcuff or Gignac.

  • Jean-Francois

Sarah, unfortunately for Benzema, Domenech won’t play him. I really think if there is a “spark” it will be provided by Gourcuff, or an older player, not Henry though, I have a lot of faith in Henry, but he just can’t lead a team. In comparison he isn’t nearly a good captain as zizou, but that’s to be expected, he was the best ever. Benzema is the golden boot type of player, not someone who can really get a team together. Then again, you never know, something better happen, schedule some damn friendlies!

2010 is the year for Goucuff to become world class

Jean-Francois: I think you are right that Benzema doesn’t have a lot of leadership personality qualities to provide a spark. But, I think he can score goals and that if the team starts winning then other things will fall into place. That is the type of spark I am referring to. I don’t think Gourcuff has the personality to be strong vocal leader either– he is reserved and shy (sometimes he can seem aloof). But, again, his playing style/ability can inspire the rest of the team.

Alex T: Perhaps…if he gets his confidence back– http://goal.com/en/news/90/france/2009/12/18/1695013/bordeaux-star-yoann-gourcuff-is-lacking-confidence-laurent

Jean-Francois: I think he will play him more now- especially after the Henry debacle.

Dave makes a good point on his site– http://ligue1talk.com/2009/12/18/champions-leauge-draw-and-domenech-news/– that 1.5 hours of debate is a long time if it was truly one sided…
