Face of the Future? Gonzalo Higuain

French-born Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain has been named as one of 50 players selected for the France-Greece friendly on the 15th. According to Eurosport, as of 11/6 Higuain hadn’t yet decided whether to accept the call-up.

The eighteen-year-old striker (currently playing for the Argentinian team River Plate and subject of a whole bunch of transfer rumors, most of them European) was born in France but grew up in Argentina. He chose not to play for Argentinian international youth teams because he wanted to keep his international (read: French) options open. And yes, Argentina is still interested.

Click here for the cool Gonzalo Higuaín video Bob found, which I’m too lazy to repost.

Says Higuain: “I think myself French, but I want to make the right choice.”

(I’m just a little bit curious about how living in France for the first ten or so months of your life causes you to think yourself French? I’ll be spending a couple weeks in Paris eventually. I’m guessing maybe I’ll “think myself French” afterwards too.)

So is the French team ready to make a commitment to a talented Argentinian kid who was born in France to an Argentinian soccer-playing father and who does not speak French? Whoa. I’m having flashbacks…

    Laurie,

I honestly dont think Gonzalo will be playing for france, because if he did he wouldnt hesitate to announce it already since the National team of France has called him up. if you look on the fifa website, it has a quote of both Gonzalo & his agent claiming that he wants to play for Argentina, but the problem is he is scared he might not get called up for Argentina. Gonzalo himself said yesterday he wants to be called by basile, but basile hasnt contacted him yet. Gonzalos dad i think kind of wants him to play for france just for living benefits. but I dont think Gonzalo does.

The reason he is scared to wait on Argentina is because that chance might not come soon. gonzalo would have to fight with, Crespo, Tevez, Messi, Aguero, Milito, Saviola, Cavenaghi, Palacio, and so on. this is a deep deep line to compete with.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/ Laurie

I’d be a bit surprised to see him play for France also. My guess would be that he’s on the list because he’s got to make a decision one way or the other soon, and Domenech wanted to stake his claim and force a reaction.

But who knows how Domenech’s mind works?

(I also got the feeling that his dad wants him to play for France. The kid’s eighteen, so who knows whether that will influence him towards France or Argentina.)

  • luca

He is French born and should play for France.

  • http://France wamdiego10

He’s scared of not being selected for argentina because argentina has too much talent

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/ Laurie

One other thing that struck me with this story is the fact that this kid seems to have been raised with the expectation that he will BE David Trezeguet. (Well, maybe with most of the last year deleted.) The similarities in their life stories are kind of eerie. And Higuain’s first trip back to France after moving to Argentina at ten months was for World Cup 1998.

I wonder if this is driven by the son or by the father. And I wonder if it makes him more or less likely to play for France.

“He’s scared of not being selected for argentina because argentina has too much talent”

Although Argentina do have lots of talent in players such as Messi, however so do France. I’m not really into French football but I do know of some great young french talent: Ribery and I expect good things from Rudy Haddad.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/ Laurie

The France-Greece list is out and Higuain is in. Guess thinking oneself French actually works when you’er an immensely talented eighteen-year-old.

  • luca

Well it’s official Domenech has named Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema to the NT for the friendly against Greece.

    Allez

  • toddutah

The only reason he would want to play for france is that Argentina is loaded for the future. I still think he can make the Argy team as they still will need a taller type forward. It is sad though because the reason there are so many Argentines soccer players born born in other countries is because their dads are there playing to earn a living. I guess in 20 years we will be talking about Lionel Messis kids being offered to play for Spain. But lets face it that Higuain in Argentine who happens to have a dad that lived a couple of years in France.

    Comparison between France and Argentina:

Messi (Age 19) VS Ribery (Age 23) Messi wins easily no comment

    Aguero (18) VS Benzema (18)
Today Aguero is much more expansive (20-25 Million €), he wins

    Saviola (24) Vs Govou (27)
Saviola domintates easily (more goals, younger, played a 10 times better WC, plays better that’s all !)

    Tevez (22) Vs Henry (29)
Henry wins but if we look at the age, Tevez is already stronger than Henry at the same age, we’ll see within 10 years but with Tevez’s potential, a draw could be declared.

    Cruz (31) Vs Wiltord (32)
Draw, Cruz scores much more but Wiltord is very useful.

    Crespo (31) Vs Trézéguet(29)
Draw, same kind of player, same results even if Crespo’s last year is much better than trezeguet’s, moreover trezeguet is argentine.

Diego Milito (27) Vs Saha (28)
Short win by Milito because he’s top scorer in la liga and scored 15 goals last years, Saha never made a season with a lot of goal.

Maxi rodriguez (25) Vs Giuly (30) Maxi wins, Maxi’s been the greatest player of last WC, he leads atletico, scores much more goals and is younger.

    Cambiasso (26) Vs Viera (30)
Draw, yeah because Cambiasso is youger and his potential is the same as Viera although Viera is stronger, Cambiasso scores goals and great passing abilities.

    Mascherano (22) Vs Makelele (33)
Draw, Mascheranno’s potential is higher than Maké’s, because same Stamina, same defensive skills but Masch is much youger !

    Gago (19) Vs Toulalan (23)
Gago wins ! No matter, Gago is wanted by Barça and real madrid but he’s only 19 !

Aimar (26) Vs Anelka (28) Aimar wins, watch Saragoss is 3rd in la liga since he arrived !

Riquleme (28) Vs Who ? Ah ! Zidane (34) but Zidane’s retired ! Zidane would win, but do not forget riquelme.

Veron (32) Vs Micoud (33) Veron wins easily, no comment.

Lucho Gonzalez (25) Vs Malouda (27)
Draw, at the moment, but lucho’s work in porto is paying in the C. L. and now barçà wants him ! Just have a look at his last goal in C.L. !
    D’alessandro Vs who ? no opponent !

    Ayala (33) Vs Thuram (34)
    Draw, no comment

    Samuel (27) Vs Gallas (28)
Samuel wins by his potential and amazing skills, even if Gallas is more consistent.

    Gabi Milito (25) Vs Boumsong ( ??)
Milito wins, Boumsong is a joke.

Gabi Heinze (28) Vs Mexes (25)
Mexes wins, Domenech should make him a starter in France

    Gonzalo Rodriguez (21) Sylvestre (28)
The potential of Gonzalo gives him a win

    Javier Zanetti (32) Sagnol (30)
    Zanetti wins, no comment

    Sorin Vs Abidal
Sorin wins because he can play offense

    Burdisso (25) Vs Chimbonda (27)
Burdisso wins, this guy is an important player at Inter, where is chimbonda ?

Abondanzieri Vs Coupet : Coupet wins, no comment

    Ustari (19) Vs Landreau (27)
Ustari wins, he ‘s wanted by Barçà and real madrid

    Final result :

    Argentina : 15 wins, 6 draw
    France : 3 wins, 6 draw

OK 15-3 Argentina, what do you want more ?
Ah ! I know ! You want Gonzalo Higuain ! (18 years old)

This does not even count some of the 16 year old argys that are being fought over by Italy trying to do the same thing france is. My message is
France, Italy, Spain START TRAINING YOUR OWN YOUTH! LEAVE OUR PLAYERS ALONE!

  • Philippe

    Hey Todd,

Interesting analysis, but aren’t you biased? Messi better than Ribéry? Zanetti better than Sagnol? Draw between Cambiasso and Viéra? Wow! We’re not watching the same game…

France start training your own youth? We started this in the seventies with the launch of a National Football Centre in Paris and the introduction of a proper curriculum for the beautiful game, our system has since been copied by other prominent football countries such as England.

Many of our youngsters start their careers abroad (heard of Yohann Gourcuff at AC Milan, or Sinama at Liverpool?), this shows the depth of talent in French football.

I don’t deny that Argentina are a fantastic footballing nation, but Brazil, France and Italy have achieved the best international results in the past 10 years.

  • luca

The reason why I think Higuain will choose France is because it’s France for heavens sake. Honestly who would choose to play for Argentina when your eligible to play for Les Bleus?

Playing in the heart of Europe, Paris, the food, the wine the Euro Championship etcetera.

    Allez

  • fab

argentina is better than france historically

    thats a fact

the kid does not even speak french and he lives and has lived in argentina for the past 17 yrs or so

its foolish to think he should play for france

you can make 3 teams with the amount of leftovers who joined other NT’s that are from argentina and brazil

  • luca

your a bit of a loser fab …no offense.

    Allez

  • http://France wamdiego10

    Hi Phillipe,

Todd Utah has borrowed my analysis,
It is obvious that Messi is ten times better than ribery, it also obvious that Zanetti is 10 times better than Sagnol.

I just agree with you about viera VS cambiasso, because Today Vieira has a better carrer, but Cambiasso is just incredible, he can score goals like stirker (volleys, headers, long range shots, shots from the box after amazing ball control) while he is a unfatigable DM.
Cambiasso is technically superior to Viera, he’s younger and starts to deliver better performances than Vieira

  • luca

Higuain father is urging him to play for France, obviously he’s an intelligent gentleman. I am like many others out there who are tired of other countries trying to claim our players. He was born in France yet the Argentines are trying to convince him to play for them. If he did decides to play for Argentina I fear he will be another player drown in their NT Sea of failures.

    Allez

  • Gianni

He should play for Argentina because they have a better coaching system and better players, France does too, but the French are troulbe-makers.

  • Gianni

He would be one of the only FRENCH BORN players on the French squad.

  • Gianni

im sorry for the language dre used, he is greek and in jealous that their soccer team is terrible and got busted for fixing games at euro 2004…anyhow france needs to get some actual french players, it would feel awkward playing for a country and more than half that team isnt even from that country

  • Dre

Yea i just wrote that crap about Gianni because i knew he wouldnt mind and he is not a homo anyway he should play for France because France does need some French born players and Argentina is already stacked for the future! :)

  • Gianni

like i said…Greeks don’t know the game of soccer

  • Gianni

If gonzalo was supposed to be so good then there shouldn’t be a problem w/ him playing for better Argentina.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/ Laurie

Dre said: “Yea i just wrote that crap about Gianni because i knew he wouldnt mind.”

S’okay. The system automatically pulls posts containing certain words and saves them for me. Reading them is the most interesting part of running this page!

Dre, sorry about your team! (Okay, not really.) :-)

Also, I don’t mind the comments about France needed more French-born players. Valid topic for discussion. Just don’t say they need more “white” players, or you’ll tick me off.

    :-)

  • Brandon

i find it unbelievable that people are agreeing that Javier Zanetti is better than Willy Sagnol. Sagnol is a passionate, amazingly talented solid defender. His style is different from Zanetti but in my mind there is no comparison. And to put anyone above Thuram, or Vieira… cant agree. The French had the best defense at the world cup. Abidal, Gallas, Thuram, Sagnol are 4 of the best. regardless.

  • bansie

    Great postings guys…
    All I gotta say is
GONZALO HIGUAIN is for Argentina NT..Crespo is almost done…saviola is not that great..cruz could not show anything in world cup when we needed him most…so messi, tevez, aguero, higuian…they are the must in Argy NT…
I bet u guys…Higuian will opt to play for argy NT, coco better call him ASAP!!!

  • Kris

Why doesnt the whole world drop off their babies in Argentina than pick them up when there ready to play. Soccer may have been born in England but there is nothing like growing up in Buenos Aires when it comes to soccer.

  • kasets

It would be wiser to drop your babies off in Rio, Rome or Munich…..if you wanted your children to grow up to be champions.

  • Gianni

you’re right france had that one world cup and they wont win one for a long while

  • Gianni

argentina has a better team and can go farther in the future

  • drew

gonzalo will play for the agrys but the little french vs argentinan player poll is very very bias. watch some french soccer they’re pretty good too

  • luca

His conduct shows me that he should play for the argies. We want players who conduct themselves with some class. Perhaps if he had spent more time in France things would be different.

    Allez

  • Gianni

ok first of all he was raised in argentina and he was there for most of his life..even though he was born in france doesn’t mean he should play for france, france has decent players, but they arent even like..born in france, dont get me wrong theyre still great player like for example thierry henry hes a great player but he wasnt born in france, if gonazalo wants to have sucess in the future he should play for argentina becuase they already have young stars about to become the best players around, ex: messi, riquelme, tevez, and maxi…great players that a lot of clubs want, and he should be a part of that.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/ Laurie

For what it’s worth, Gianni, Henry’s parents are immigrants, but Thierry himself was born in France.

  • Gianni

Argentina is just simply a better team than France, they’ve had two world cup sucess’s and France has had that one when Zidane was amazing, if you ask me, Argentina is a VERY serious contender along with Italy and Germany, and possibly Brazil if they start to find some more young studs, Those four teams are very serious contenders for the next world cup, a lot of France’s players are getting old, so if Gonzalo wants sucess he should make the right decision and play for Argentina.
