France’s pre-World Cup Friendlies Announced. And…um…yeah

So our pre-World Cup friendlies were just annnounced.

China (93rd in FIFA rankings, in Reunion, date tba)
Costa Rica (44th in FIFA rankings, May 25, venue tba)
Tunisia (53rd in FIFA rankings, May 30 in Tunisia)

Um…yeah. Exactly who I would have picked.

The only real threat there would have to be Costa Rica. You never know though. France should win all 3, if not then we’ll know how WC2010 is going to go.

Tunisia is a good team with a lot of talented players. I think they will be good practice. Afterall, we want matches that will boost the team’s confidence and won’t fatigue them. Who would you have picked?

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

I probably would have picked at least one in the top 40, so they can see what might be required of them playing the theoretically top 32 in the world. USA has Netherlands; both are going to WC 2010. I would have picked at least one like that.

  • Alex T

dont we play spain in march?

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

    Oops, missed that one.

    Mercredi 3 mars 2010
    Match amical à Saint-Denis (21h00)
    France – Espagne

Even so, I’m not sure this schedule gives the best WC preparation. The post-Spain schedule screams “let’s build this poor team’s confidence.” Sad that this is what it’s come to.

  • Jean-François

It’s better to play easier teams in the few weeks before the World Cup, you don’t want to exhaust your players.

  • http://marseille.theoffside.com Sarah

Tunisia will be emotionally hard just because of the history between the two countries. The Tunisian players will be playing extra hard…

  • http://france.theoffside.com/ Thomas

Why would you play in Reunion???

  • http://marseille.theoffside.com Sarah

    Reunion?

  • Doumé

Well technically the Reunion is part of France.
Yes, playing Spain is indeed something, the favorite in many people’s eyes (I am still skeptical); I still don’t respect a federation who keeps in business a racist at the helm. Say anything about Domenech, he never got THAT nuts.
I think in that case we took the road of Germany and England and took morale-boosting games, instead of getting Romania or Chile. Fine, let’s just do it, and not win by 1-0, let’s get the coils going between midfield and attack, and produce a lot of stuff.

  • http://marseille.theoffside.com Sarah

Oh you are talking about the French department, Reunion. I thought you meant why do you want to have a reunion game with Tunisia (since we just played them in August 2008), but even then I wasn’t sure….

Doume: I agree, it has already been a long, hard road to this WC– lets try to do ourselves some favors…

  • Jeff

Good idea to play in Reunion Island – the supporters are probably much less likely to boo than the Paris crowds.

  • Steven

Reunion … yes, I’m pretty sure that’s the reason: the booing of La marseillaise the last time a homeside France played a national team from North Africa–also, Tunisia, I think. Remember the scandal last year? Sarkozy et al were outraged and wanted games in which such booing occured cancelled in the future …

It’s gonna be a long six months.

Oh, well, there’s always Bordeaux to get excited about until the WC!

  • Jean-Francois

Agreed steven, I hope france schedules a friendly for jan or feb.

  • glatisant

Agree that Tunisia would be tough, esp. playing on their turf. Though at least it won’t be at the Parc des Princes. (I guess the idea’s that it’s less embarrassing getting booed on the road than at home?)

China may not be a good technical side, but their players have been known for rough/dirty play in the past. The last thing we need is an injury to one of our players going into the WC (hello Cissé, meet broken leg). I hate to say this as I’m Chinese, but I’d rather they play almost anyone else instead…

  • Jean Pierre

well yeah its france so I hadnt expected anything else.

  • Aditya

I am happy with this. Spain is one difficult team. Other matches will allow the players to gel at their own pace. France’s group will allow them to ease into their rhythm just like in 2006.

  • Timmy

Well france should get a friendly against Ireland. But let me say I am over the shambles of what happened in Paris, thats life get over it…sickening butwhats done is done. I reckon it would be a good competitive game, both teams would be up for this…with both having something to prove. They should have got a good south american team also along with costa rica. I can see france exiting at the first round….yes Frabce have good individual players but until Ramond is sacked I cant see a bright future.
Expect to see the best of france again for the euro’s when a good manager is in charge

  • Jeff

Cool idea, Timmy. Wow. That could be an interesting friendly.

You may be one of the first people getting over it. That whole match still does my head in when I think about it. It was awful.

  • Larry

Honestly, why even play the Maghrebin countries? It seems like it always leads to trouble.
