Gomis Scores Twice in his International Debut

L’Equipe is saying that nobody since Zidane has scored twice in his international debut game. And I believe that was back in 1994?

What do you think, folks? Is Gomis the real deal? And more importantly, is Raymond going to include him for Euros?

I just read a post-match interview with Domenech (which I’ll post soon if I can find it again) where he says he’s going to have quite a sleepless night tonight. After this game, I think he’s right.

From his performance today he seemed pretty good. It would be hard on him if he is not chosen in final 23 but it would be the case with Cisse as well considering what he has been through in past years.

  • http://senegal.worldcupblog.org Magnusson

I’m torn with this. I think Cissé may have lost his spot.

  • http://tunisia.worldcupblog.org/ Rami

All I know is as soon as I saw this I thought of Massaer. Gomis gives up Senegal for France and scores two on his debut… and it wasn’t like they were tap ins! I didn’t see the entire match so I dont know how he fits into the team but taking in form players is just as important as taking ones who have played in these competitions before.

  • Benjamin

i watched the end of the second half on this mexican channel
and from the little spanish i understood, the comentateur was like
who the hell is bafe! lol. i feel bad for cisse tho, hes not very good, but i feel bad cuz of the whole
    wc2006 injury.

since i didnt see most of the game, someone tell me how the defence did? and midfield? (nasri ben arfa ldiarra.

im guessing boumsong, cisse, a diarra, sagnol, mandanda, 1 defender, and flamini are gone

  • Yaz

I enjoy myself with the Arsène Wenger comment :

“He took a ticket for Berne, you think ?”

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

Yaz, that’s funny. I was watching with English commentary, so I missed that.

  • Michel-Olivier

people get over yourselves. the match was fix so the french could win.
first goal they did not close gomis down, the yellow shirts gave him space to score. second goal was not that special, clearly you can see #4 from equador wasn’t marking him, he gave gomis all the time in the world to score. just like how roberto carlos gave henry space to score during the WC06

with performance like that and for someone who knows football like myself i can’t see france passing the group stage.

  • Ronald

whoooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaa Michel-Oliver, that some heavy stuff your talking about. Isnt fixing a big taboo in football ? lol.

As much as i love ecuador, i wouldnt go as far as saying something like that.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Laurie

Yeah, didn’t Domenech get banned from coaching for alleging match-fixing?

    :-)

  • Yaz

Michel-Olivier, if you know the football so well, you must know that a Goal is a Goal… And when a player score, there is ANY TIME a miskate from the opponnent.

Whatever you can say, to win a match, you MUST score.

But, Gomis did more than two simple goals. He scores two fantastic goals. His first half-period in french squad.

All that things counts a lot.

  • http://ghana.worldcupblog.org Inara

All goals are the result of defensive mistakes. No mistakes = clean sheet.

  • lefutur

michel-olivier, the self-appointed expert of all that is football.

  • Aditya

Don’t worry Michel-Oliver I’m sure Domenech will fix Romania and Holland matches as well if not Italy and France will go through!

  • Doumé

No comment, on the first goal it is true that the defense were more going for a pass to Anelka and weren’t anticipating the shot.
I think it’s a good thing to have somebody who takes shots quite spontaneously, (I always felt sometimes our players want to do too many passes to get in the perfect shot position) and from a distance, which opens and spreads the defense. That’s a nice plus.
Good luck, Raymond, too much of a good thing can be a burden!
And Trezeguet, if he was watching, must have scratched his head.

  • Eric

First I would like to say that Michel-Olivier I think your crazy and second I was absolutley impressed by Gomis. Before this I thought this guy was a nobody, now I think he is the next somebody. Also I felt Nasri did good this game and hope he goes to the euro. Here is a crazy idea what if Benzema and Gomis play as both strikers in the next game. It would be interesting to see the results of that match up.

  • Adrian

Michel-Olivier has no idea about football. Football is a game of opportunity and the vast majority of goals are being scored because somebody made a mistake. Even if it was not the defender, you could trace it back to the midfielder who lost the ball, etc., etc. Mistakes are part of football and if a defender doesn’t mark his striker properly, then it is very, very likely that he f$%^ed up and still very, very unlikely that he fixed it.
And accusing Roberto Carlos of letting anybody score a goal during the knock-out phases of a world cup is just plain pathetic. M-O, you don’t just not understand the game as such…you also don’t understand the status it has…especially in Latin world. Maybe you should stick with Baseball.

  • Jean-Michel

I’m with Doume on this one. This guy came in firing and made the most of his chances. Didn’t try to make the perfect pass. He took all of the responsibility and put it on himself to score. Didn’t see the game but who knows the game might’ve been a draw had he not scored.

  • Christian

Well im a huge Ecuador fan myself this whole match fixing is bulls*%# lol :P the goals were pure class from the striker! and well what can I say the defenders marking skills especially in the second goal was pretty average…
    still SI SE PUEDE ECUADOR!!!

  • Miguel Rosado

I’m a huge fan of the Netherlands and I’ll be your rivals in the EC.

I think this guy Gomis has to go to the EC. I didn’t watch the game I only watched Gomis’ goals and they were great goals. It’s so funny how Michel Olivier says he knows about football when he really doesn’t. Cisse is a great player and has had some hard times but if France wants to win they must take the best and Gomis has showed that he’s one of them tonight.

As an Oranje fan I hope Gomis won’t get selected because he’ll be a legend!!!. Mark my words!!!.

  • Brian

Besides, if this game was fixed and therefore easy to score in, why didn’t anybody else get a goal?

  • tal ch

Gomis is a rising star looing forward to see him playing in the euro!
    p.s.
    anelka = crap

  • http://brett.kozinn.com Brett

this is what i’d like to see:

    coupet
    abidal – thuram – gallas – evra
    viera – makelele – nasri – ribery
    henry – anelka

sagnol diarra govou malouda benzema and gomis make for a strong bench.

  • Alex

    Gomis is in the squad!

  • Michel-Olivier

    @adrian
“you also don’t understand the status it has…especially in Latin world. Maybe you should stick with Baseball.”
dude i was born to a latin family. i have a french first name, middle, and last name. my 1st language is french, spanish, and english as 2nd and 3rd.
as for baseball, i never like it never play it.
since your here to stereotype against americans, since you’re an aussie Maybe you should stick with cricket and rugby

  • terry carvallo

BRET i would love to see that team YOU ROCK BRO

  • Adrian

@MO: I’m writing from Oz but am European. However, doesn’t change the fact that you obviously lost contact with what football is – what the reasons are for that, doesn’t really matter. A fact’s a fact (and it seems all the others agree with me).

  • sandrahn

“He took a ticket for Berne, you think?” – arsene wenger’s comment — I guess I’m totally stupid but I’m missing out here on the meaning of this joke.

This guy michel-oliver is clearly a comedian troll, please don’t give him any attention. The match was “fixed”???? Who the hell fixes a damned FRIENDLY?!?!?! He knows crap about football. And to say that Brazil deliberately threw that match against France at the 2006 wc….well, I’m a Brazilian, and you know where the hell you and your delusional mind can go!!!

  • http://brett.kozinn.com Brett

    haha thank you terry.

  • Weston

even though im w. the azzurri, i must admit between Trezeguet, Henry and Anelka their should not be any room him.

    Henry – Trezeguet
    Nasri
    Makelele – Ribery
    Viera
    Abidal – Thuram – Gallas – Evra
    Frey

    (i absolutly despise Malouda)
too bad Mexes is injured, and Sagnol is really good, Anelka 1st choice sub, Govou/Benzema second for forward. i guess there are so many other good defensive options Domenech didnt need Flamini.(he was axed) When Thuram Sagnol Viera Henry and co. finally retire, we’ll see if the young peoples will shine through.

  • julien

Well this is it, Gomis is in at least there ’s a bit of fresh blood, Flamini is out-I can’t figure out why, diarra and makelele are copycats, they’re excellent but should they need to push from the back, who’s gonna do it. Flamini creates more movement that any defensive midfileders I know Domenech has a very fixed game plan in mind, That’s why he dropped Mexes and didn’t even call Trezeget. Let’s hope solidity prevails because by now every serious team can read us like an open book. As for a fixed friendly game that is so insulting for Ecuador. They are professionals who have just as much desire to defend their national colors as any European team. Shame on such comments probably coming from a professional PS2 player. Go France!

  • zizou

Michel-Olivier, you are writing from America. Just because American soccer sucks, doesn’t mean that the French football team fixes all it’s matches. French soccer is great, they reached the world cup final (unless, of course, they fixed World Cup games to get there…). Plus, it’s insulting to Ecuador….

“He took a ticket for Berne, you think?” – arsene wenger’s comment

I’m laughing here. I said I hadn’t seen this. It’s only in the clip I posted. This will teach me to actually watch these things. :-) I only saw it when I had to go in and replace the clip that the UEFA nazis had pulled from DailyMotion.

Sandrahn, it’s a reference to going to play in Switzerland for Euros.
