Henry-Doms Bust-Up

September 7th, 2009 | By: jeff | 19 Comments »

When it makes the Guardian, it has some legs to it, and the story is that Henry and Doms had a bust-up.

Following the match that ended in a 1-1 draw at the Stade de France versus Romania, Henry reportedly charged Domenech with a lack of style. Henry reportedly stated that the players were uninspired by training sessions, and added, “I have been in the France team for 12 years and never have I been in this situation. We do not know how to play, where to go, there is no organization. There is no style, no guidance and no identity.”

FFF is backing Doms to stay through the World Cup. He’s their guy.

Julien Escudé and Franck Ribéry are both fitness doubts for Wednesday.

Ribery is more likely to play than Escude, but they should both make it.

Both Henry and Domenech have made statements, Doms on video and Henry on live TV, saying that this situation has been taken way out of proportion.

Still, even if it has or hasn’t, the genie is out of the bottle and it won’t go back in.

What is interesting is that people only talk about what Henry says and not what Domenech said. Doms said that the players show no hunger to win, and I actually have to agree with him.

I was 100% against Domenech at first, and I still pretty much am. But this is a 2-way road, and the high-priced players need to produce as well. Still, Ribery needs to start! That is where Domenech sucks.

These players are all overpaid divas and have got a crap attitude. I don’t recognize this squad anymore. It should be an honor to be selected to play for your country. These punks don’t seem to understand or appreciate this. Gignac seems to be the only one that does. This team lacks intensity and the will to win. Benzema as a sub looks half asleep. Anelka (and I like him)needs to add more to the attack because Henry cannot do it all alone (although he did basically). More and more I look back to that incident Gallas wrote about in his book about Nasri. In it he charges Nasri for having no respect for the old guard. These new guys could learn a thing or two from the generation before them. It’s good that this outburst comes from Henry instead of from a fringe player like Malouda last year after the Euros. Its more credible and what’s Domenech gonna do? Bench Henry? The FFF of course have to back Domenech as bringing in a new coach now would be disastrous. Fingers crossed for qualification.

All these players are overpaid, but I believe that they all want and respect wearing the national team kit. Unlike players such as Paul Scholes who decided to hang up the 3 lion shirt prematurely (under pressure from SAF) these players see this as the honor that it is…I think that Domenech has finally run out of “get out of jail free” cards. I hope he gets the sack after Serbia, there will still be time for a new manager to come in and manage the last 2 group games and the likely 2nd place play off. Then again Domenech has 9 lives…so he might be in South Africa…hopefully only as a tourist.

Actually, according to Le Parisien, the facts occured the day before the game against Romania, on Friday. And Henry was reported to speak calmly, with no agressiveness…

The incident was took place on Friday, but wasn’t it was reported after the game? And Le Parisien said that Domenech was heated and Henry was calm. But, of course, Henry isn’t worried about his job, whereas Domenech is!

Still, there will be a change somewhere, but where and when. Escalettes said that he is keeping Doms no matter what the result of tomorrow’s game.

Thanks, Pat. That sounds more realistic, but it has to be described as a “bust-up” or “attack” to make the English papers.

But didn’t Domenech select these players who are “overpaid”, “have got a crap attitude” and “show no hunger”? They act like this because they know that they are not fighting for anything. Their spots on the team are guaranteed because there’s no competition. Whose fault is that? Domenech. For example, look at say Jermain Defoe for England and how well he’s playing for them. Defoe knows that one mistake with England and Capello will drop him without blinking. You can’t say that for us. Sure you can come with the petty statement that these are our best players playing for the best teams in Europe, but shouldn’t we have learned from Brazil that this type of selection style doesn’t work anymore?

Had Domenech been a competent manager following the World Cup or the EUROs and broadened his selection of French players, whom I consider, along with Spain, have the best crop of players, we wouldn’t even be in this predicament. Also, I love how Domenech said he was shocked when Henry spoke about it to him. Seriously, Domenech? I can understand if we were in first place and undefeated in the group. Something is seriously wrong with the guy.

Hey don’t worry guys, Domenech says this match isn’t crucial to France’s hopes of qualifying, as long as we play well. Phew, I’m glad there’s no reason to worry…

Jao,
Don’t get things twisted. I’m not supporting Domenech by any means with my statement. Sure he’s responsible for all of the things you mentioned. Even if there is little competition for places, I would still expect a level of professionalism from each one of the players. That, in my opinion, is lacking from them. Some of us may not like our bosses but we still have to perform and execute the basic tasks we are responsible for.

Jean-Michel, you are right, this is a give-and-take situation. Domenech has had questionable starting 11s since he took over the job. On the other hand, these players need to show some heart.

I totally agree with Michel-Olivier as far as the French comment. I feel that the 1998 France team was “French”. Though it was a lot easier to have that feeling when you are playing all home games.

When I see this team, I see one group of kids and one group of professional players that care more about their club team than their national team. That is why I want to see Vieira come back, you KNOW he would try to win for his country.

“Some of us may not like our bosses but we still have to perform and execute the basic tasks we are responsible for.”

And if you are not completing the basic tasks you are responsible for, the boss has a right to criticize you and fire you. That isn’t the case with Domenech. He will just call you up again for the next match.

“When I see this team, I see one group of kids and one group of professional players that care more about their club team than their national team.”

So replace them with players that do care. Oh wait! With such an important match against Serbia coming up, we don’t have enough French players in our talent pool with international experience to play in such an important match on the road. Whose fault is that? Oh and that “because they don’t feel French” comment. Really? smh.

thanks for that link Dave T.

I really hope there’s some truth to the speculation that Houllier or Blanc could replace Raymundo. Either one of those men would be a million times better than what we have now. I think you would see and instant reaction from the players and some attractive attacking football (no more 2 DMs!!!)

I agree, I am not a Houllier fan (yeah, I will admit,it goes back to the days when Houllier benched Brad Friedel at Liverpool, and I still don’t forgive him for that). Still, I would like to see Blanc. Another great choice would be Deschamps, but that isn’t happening, or course. He might have wanted to wait another year to take a job, because he could have had this one.

look to the dutch NT and than to the french NT

this crap is really embarrassing. its very dumb to discuss problems in public even if they are right, like gallas and coupet did. henry and domenech are both right but i take henry’s side, even if they both should be on the same side. henry would never ‘attack’, he is an intelligent captain and not so aggresive like captain ballack.

the players are acting as domenech is their adolf-hitler-dictator or something , it’s time for a new coach even if domenech is a little bit right.

henry is talking about old news anyways, even my 6-year old sister already knows what domenech lacks when she was 5

i think toulalan is the player with the most effort and french patroitism in this team, even more than gignac
