Laurie: if you’re correct about the lineup, I am excited to see Henry, Gignac, and Anelka combination. Less excited about Govou. Why is Malouda not on there? I think he can combine very successfully with Anelka, as he showed at Chelsea.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a France game with English commentary. This guy’s pronunciation of “Gignac” is going to drive me nuts.

Yes, Gignac has really impressed me since he joined the team. Benzema scored some points in my book today as well. Serbia qualified over France, but as bad as the play-offs sound, they really are not. I still hope France tries instead of being pissy against Austria on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I can’t see our beloved Bleus going far with Dumbenech as coach. They are a collection of individual talent in search of a unifying agent. Look at what Capello has done for England, by way of example.

If you have a front line of Henry, Anelka and Benzema/Gignac to call upon, with the likes of Toulalan and Diarra buttressing the midfield, it takes real talent to be mediocre with that group.

Yes, I am thrilled with the win. I only wish they’d done it against Serbia. Or Romania. Or any of the other chances they had to do the business and avoid the uncertainly of playoffs.
