Neighborhood party, France not invited

June 27th, 2008 | By: jeff | 25 Comments »

France, with a preference for being at the heart of all things Europe, is consigned to the role of spectator for Sunday’s Euro 2008 final. Neighbors Spain and Germany will do battle.

Is there a France Supporter among us who isn’t rooting for Spain? You can see brief highlights of the two semifinals here.

How about that playmaking from Cesc?

Here. France supporter not rooting for Spain.

I like Spanish people, I love the country, the culture. Good players. But I just don’t want to see that coach raise the Cup. Good coach, but I would have fired him for his words. It contributed to the monkey calls and the whistling of the Marseillaise. One of my best memories of his 1-3 rout in 2006, was when he was screaming on the sideline, and Vieira told him to shut up, eye-to-eye.

And quite a few others weren’t invited, England weren’t even in the phone book. It’s alright, it’s these guys’ turn, it’s football, the hardest game, you can’t expect to be always at the top.

My problem is that I love Spain, I love these players, and I’m massively in love with Cesc — I’d love to see him lift that trophy after the disappointment he suffered with Arsenal last season.

But then there’s Doumé’s well-taken points about Aragones, who I really dislike.

I also feel for poor Jens who, despite everything, I still love and would also like to see him lift that trophy.

Tough call. I just hope Germany puts on a better performance than they did against Turkey.

Oh — and I have to laud the Italians for acting on their manager problem so quickly, whereas the FFF…

The manager’s only one part of the story for Spain, but fair point, he’s no statesman.

It’s heresy maybe, but I might just find myself pulling for les Boches. Podolski’s my pick for player of the tournament so far (though, Jeff, I’m glad we got to see Cesc at his best, and I hope he plays all 90/120 on Sunday). Regardless, I’m hoping the game matches the tournament’s overall quality.

I go for Spain, just because they won less titles. I don’t like their coach neither, but it’s not a reason for the whole country not to have a taste of victory for once.

No news about Thuram yet?

As far as I’m concerned the credit goes to the Spanish players. They’ve battled hard and Cesc is putting on a clinic. I’m hoping that Adebayor and Bendtner are taking notes on how to finish the beauties that Cesc is feeding through the box. So ironic though that the banner of “NO RACISM” was on the sidelines, but I’m afraid it’s here to stay and it’s not going to disappear anytime soon. Don’t you people think that the Germans have that mental toughness that no other team on the history of football has ever had? It’s simply amazing that time and time this team has always been near the top. My heart says SPAIN but my logic says GERMANY!

Laurie,
Good to hear from you, and best wishes for your husband’s recovery. I heard they’re flying Ribéry to your house so they can recover together and be less bored ;)

@ Foreverzidane
as long as people believe that human beings is divided by race, racism will always exist. Blame charles darwin, nazism, and other antichrist’s for racism.

People in Spain don’t even like Aragones so it seems we are all on the same page. I’d like to see Torres have a field day on the German defense. Its been a frustrating tournament for him and I would like for some of his Liverpool form to show up to silence his critics. It should definitely be a good match, both teams know how to score and in the end thats all that matters.

He’s fine, thanks for asking. Just minor vocal chord surgery so he can sing again. And Doume, the though of my husband and Ribery together is kind of scary! They both have a similar sense of humor!!

Oh wow, he sings! Hopefully better than our guy Franck!
What style? I do classical professionally, and work quite a bit in the opera (in the orchestra).

I’m rooting for Germany. Aragones is a less than admiral coach, but that is well trodden material. For me I feel that Germany got goosed 2 years ago with really late goals when they played a great game (may be a memory lapse on my part, but I feel they deserved to be in the final). This is where I pull out the 1/4 german card since I’m not spanish.

I keep my fingers crossed for the Mannshaft. If theiy play their full potential, they are 53 over 47 % with regard to Spain.

And you know their fighing spirit if it really is up for grabs !

I have no emotions with either Germany or Spain. But because Germany already has won thrice I want Spain to win. Don’t want Germany two ahead of France in # of trophies.

i just want spain to win for the simple reason that
they have great tactical players and they play pure offensive football.
i hate aragones, but eh the coach doesnt make the team…
germany is just…big guys kicking the ball from 45 meters out, hoping it goes in the net…

Doume, he sings and plays guitar in a Celtic band with a couple of friends. Lots of good Irish drinking songs with the occasional ballad thrown in. They’re in great demand on St. Patrick’s Day.

To keep this on topic, I think i’m rooting for Spain for all the reasons everybody’s mentioned. Plus they beat Italy, so there will always be a warm spot in my heart for them, despited Aragones. But I don’t feel strongly about this — I’d be pretty much okay with Germany too. As long as the game isn’t boring!

Laurie, that’s good music, love it. Best wishes for recovery, with or without Ribéry.

I think if Germany can impose a fairly fast pace to the game, we’re in for a good one. But I think Spain plays the midfield too well to let them do that – I think it’s going to be a battle to find lanes. Should be good anyway.
