News about Sweden-France

Well, Samir, didn’t last long.

He was on The List for less than twenty-four hours. Now he’s off again due to a “slight thigh problem.”

Gotta hate those slight thigh problems.

The final squad is only nineteen. Does this mean that there will be only one player who doesn’t make the bench? THAT would suck.

It’s an interesting group, though. I’m particularly excited to see Yoann Gourcuff and Gaël Clichy. Especially Clichy. I will never, ever forget the thrilled look on his face when they played the Marseillaise before he played in his first A’ game awhile back.

You had me at Allons enfants de la Patrie, Gaël. You had me at…

Oh, never mind.

Game’s at 21h00. Since I got the time off the FFF site, I’m assuming that’s France time, which I think would make it noon Pacific and 3:00 Eastern. Right?

I am not finding this on any legit US sites. Setanta appears to have sworn off international friendlies altogether, and I’m not finding any other sites carrying it. (Off topic, if you’re a Setanta subscriber — or possibly even if you’re not — please stop by and take their survey, and be sure to note that you’re interested in le Championnat and World Cup qualifiers and International friendlies. Because otherwise all we’ll get is a steady diet of EPL, and every channel and its dog shows that.)

Please post links to illicit streams for Sweden-France in the comments if you have them. And, since I’ve been having major issues with my internet, anybody posting a torrent in the comments after the game will become my newest, bestest best friend.

Our joueurs for the game:

Goalkeepers: Mandanda (Marseille), Lloris (Lyon)

Defenders: Boumsong (Lyon), Gallas (Arsenal), Sagna (Arsenal), Evra (Manchester United), Fanni (Rennes), Mexès (Roma), Clichy (Arsenal)

Midfielders: Flamini (AC Milan), L. Diarra (Portsmouth), Toulalan (Lyon), Malouda (Chelsea), A. Diarra (Bordeaux), Gourcuff (Bordeaux), Govou (Lyon)

Forwards: Henry (Barcelona), Anelka (Chelsea), Benzema (Lyon)

Too many Diaras on that list. Also I’m sure there is someone besides Boumsong that could have been chosen for defense for example Squillaci. Anyways happy to see many new faces and i am sure with Flamini and Mexes playing our defense will be solid. Hope we win.

Good to see Domenech wised up and brought Flamini, Mexes, and Clichy, but Frey+Trezeguet’s absence is still ridiculous.

When I looked at the friendly list, I realized something about Domenech-Trezeguet. I am a massive fan of Trezegol, but Domenech is not only stupid but he’s downright an asshole. I remember when Juve was demoted to Serie B, he said he’d hold off since he was in Serie B (Italy didn’t with Buffon, ADP, etc) and later consider Trez when he returned back to the top flight. It has become obvious that that was a lie all along, considering his terrific season. That pisses me off.

Laurie, you are correct about the game time, 3 EST.
Usually if there is no piratecast, I go to l’Equipe text comments (in French), plus I check the radio casts from Europe 1 (Guy Roux is usually there, always interesting in his own way) but I heard that RMC (Radio Monte-Carlo) has good radio guys too (all those in French). It is a game in which people have a big interest, basically because of the huge coach controversy and how players handle it; really, channels should carry this!
Yes, without Ribery, Nasri or Ben Harfa we still have a good list, maybe lacking in offensive creativity, but we’ll see. That’s where I think Henry will (or should) maybe drop back and come up with “the sight”. Maybe the most exciting will be the back line with all these fired-up guys. Who will be on the right?
By tomorrow night, I think we’ll have a better idea where we’re going – except for the offensive midfield. Somebody step up.
I remember reading a piece in June 2006 where the journalist interviewed people from a neighborhood in Boulogne where a guy on the street said “Oh, TiFranck Ribéry is going to be in the National Team? In the World Cup? I’m glad for him. We used to play all the time on the street, and later on the field right that way. But how about his brother? Is he in les Bleus? Because his brother was waaaaay better! Now THAT guy was something”
Bring on the brother

Lol at the interview with the Boulogne guy. He makes me a bit curious about Ribéry’s bro.

Btw pissed off that no channel or site wants to broadcast this great match of great importance

Bring on the brother, indeed!

That’s news about Setanta. Didn’t they show a couple of French-league games every week last year? And I recall the France-England friendly was pay-per-view, but later broadcast free a few days later.

Laurie, I share your excitement about Clichy. He and Nasri looked good together on the left side at Arsenal last week. I wonder if Mad Dom would try the same thing with France. Maybe an aggresive new left back will help reinvigorate Malouda, who I can see getting even less time with Chelsea this year than last.

It looks like Arsenal could soon have an all-France backline. The Guardian is reporting that Mikaël Silvestre is about to be signed by Wenger as “a first-choice centre-half alongside William Gallas.”

@ Michel-Olivier:

Doesn’t Chelsea’s Didier Drogba have dual citizenship? He grew up in France, right?

Just imagine a group of strikers that included Drogba & Adebayor …

It looks like Mandanda will start today, with Evra on the left side …

Juventus used to have a lot french. Henry, Trezeguet, Thuram, Vieira, Zidane, Deschamps, all at Juve. Domenech would do well to call a few more Arsenal players and a few less Lyon players.

OK, I did a little investigating job regarding Ribéry’s brother.

I found the 2006 article where the reporter was interviewing people from his native (very humble) neighborhood:
http://www.liberation.fr/actualite/sports/192329.FR.php
Excerpt: “he was bored as sh*t playing with kids his age” “He had something nobody else had. But his brother François, who plays in Calais, is even better technically” (Biloute played with both, in Boulogne)”some phenomenons”

So the next step was to go to the Calais website
http://www.calaisfoot.fr/
and there he was! To see the face of François Ribéry, go to the
drop-down menu, Championnats>Equipe, then hover the mouse on the name.
And the guy’s face should replace the very ugly mascot (it works most of the time). I’d say there is definitely a resemblance specially in the eyes and the forehead. And obviously he’s also a prankster.
So there you have it! The guy who is “even better” than Ribéry ;)

Excellent detective work, Doume!

It’s funny, for the first split second after I clicked on the photo, I thought, “Oh, they look alike!” And then I looked closer and thought, “No, they don’t.” But there was that little jolt of recognition at the start — I just can’t figure out what caused it.

Laurie, I think the top half of the face is quite similar really. Specially eyes and eyebrows.
Next time I go through the chunnel (probably never, since I would get on the ferry through my hometown), I’ll be sure to check on Ti Francois in Calais.
