Also, I find myself developing affection for Mexes. This, needless to say, is deeply troubling, in part because he's so much prettier than I am.

Pedro, Do not dis Thuram, or we CANNOT be friends.

:-)

Seriously, I have much more to say on the subject, but I'm desperately running around getting ready to leave town, so it will have to wait.

Rach, thanks for the article. I had picked up bits and pieces in multiple places but never seen it all laid out in one spot before. Good article!

Sigh about Makalele, it seems he is always destined to be underappreciated, first at Real and now Chelsea.

It'll be sad to see Thuram retire, but he's doing it because he thinks a younger player is ready to join the team. What can I say? The guy is class.

Btw, I noticed a previous post about Henry's relationship with the other Les Bleus players. I found an article about this written pre World Cup 2006, particularly his relationship with Zidane. The Scotsman is *I believe* a credible broadsheet, though of course nothing is infallible. http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/sport.cfm?id=823772006

Abou Makelele I think that, if this you say is true, Chelsea are dumm not to give him one more year... Everybody knows, Mourinho especially, that Real Madrid's downfall started when they let him go. The following Galacticos policy multiplied it by 1000 - and mind you Real is a team where the policy is always some sort of Galacticos-policy. It's part of the club's mystique.

About his age, for example in Italy a player lasts longer than in other leagues. In his case, I don't see any limiation from his age. He's still the world reference as #6. For me he is, at least...

About Thuram, with all due respect, what were you expecting...? He would go to Barcelona at 34-35 and start kicking a**..., along side Puyol? The guy is still very good and has an excellent CV. Yeah, OK. But to be a Barcelona central defender you need much more than that. And it's not new glasses neither. ;-) Also because it's a team that will always tend towards attaking and the first place they cut down, if a match starts going wrong, is defense. In other words, it's not a team to grow old gracefully and he knew it very well when we went there. But I imagine he's no different than other players and any player wants to play for them. Thuram should go to Inter, the USA, middle-east, or any other big club, more or less famous for being a "pre-retirement" club... ;-) Anyway, don't you find Barcelona to Fulham a somewhat drastic shift...?
