Raymond Domenech Sums Up Our Thoughts

November 17th, 2007 | By: Laurie | 6 Comments »

I think France coach Raymond Domenech speaks for a lot of us in his thoughts on the Scotland-Italy game today:

“I am divided between satisfaction and disappointment to not have a match in Ukraine [that will have] intensity, pressure and true risk. To build a generation, it is necessary that we [experience] difficulty. “

That about sums it up, doesn’t it?

Domenech has nothing to worry about. I just beat Ukraine 5-1 on the fifa 2007 xbox version. :)

Calcio don’t believe all the so called tabloid declaration of Domenech, that we in France never heard. Only Italian Berlusconian papers or tabloids of Ruppert Murdoch heard shocking words in the mouth of Domenech. When he said”I thanks Italy to play the game totally(with their heart” it become “i motivated them with my provocation”…

Well it wasn’t dubbed the “Group of Death” for nothing. Any time you will have a qualifying group that includes the 2 WC finalists, plus a WC playoff team, plus another which is notorious for beating anybody, you’re in for a heck of a fight. If Ukraine and Scotland had advanced, I might not have been surprised. While France made no mistake against the “smaller teams” (and in the end it payed), she didn’t solve the problem with Scotland – bravo Scotland. It was major to beat Italy right away.
Italy had a slow start. Scotland had a slow end. Ukraine beat itself. So in the end the WC finalists made it through, and yes the fight was tough.

I was fairly optimistic for the Ukr game anyway. Morocco is not an easy team. 2-2 was very good both as a boost and a wake-up call. With all our guys, I think the game would have been OK next Wednesday.

L’Equipe was emphasizing that France has now qualified for 7 consecutive final phases, since 96. That never happened even with Platini. And the guy who played all of those, the symbol of that rich era is Thuram (he got help from many others along the way).
