Redemption Song – FFF’s Guy Chambily speaks out on Domenech situation

One of the most troubling aspects of the French Football Federation (FFF) retaining Domenech as long as they have is that it felt like a betrayal – like a combination of corruption and incompetence had eroded a recently fine institution. So when I read the comments from the FFF’s Guy Chambily this morning, I felt like I was getting France back – the France I know where corruption and incompetence don’t get to win out over decency and common sense.

From Reuters:

“I wrote a letter to (FFF’s chairman) Jean-Pierre Escalettes asking him to place the renewal of Domenech’s contract on the agenda of the next meeting of the federal council on December 18,” Chambily told soccer magazine France Football.

“I have two goals: the departure of Raymond Domenech and the protection of Jean-Pierre Escalettes, a very good man, who I know has been affected, even traumatised, by the situation we find ourselves in.”

“I know the majority of the council members don’t want to keep Domenech. My only fear is that they beat a retreat for personal reasons,” added the 77-year-old businessman.

“The FFF begged me not to raise the problem and Jean-Pierre Escalettes asked me to think about it twice, referring to the media outburst that my request will cause.”

These comments from Mr. Chambily square with descriptions I’ve heard of Escalettes that he’s not necessarily an apparatchik, but an older gentleman who’s in over his head.

Like Mr. Chambily, the bloggers on this site did not come early to the “Out with Doms” campaign, and we may be split even now, so I don’t have a word to say against Mr. Chambily for the timeliness of his comments, rather, I thank him profusely for speaking up as he has, and redeeming my view of the FFF. Thanks.

At this point, footballing reasons be damned. Maybe a new manager would fall flat on his face. That’s a risk well worth taking.

I want to see the back of this Domenech era.

I don’t disagree with him, but I’m puzzled by the timing. Did the Henry handball give him some cover to say this that he didn’t have before? Is he hoping to replace Domenech before World Cup?

And perhaps most important, why didn’t he say anything after Euros when it might have helped France qualify and prepare for World Cup?

  • Jeff

After the Euros, the FFF took what I saw as a brave decision to not follow the conventional approach of sacking the manager, but then the world cup qualifying campaign started badly, and at that point, it really felt like a change was needed.

The Henry handball was born out of that insipid performance, and based on that performance alone, which even Jacquet criticized, I would be clamoring for a change. That performance has provided cover akin to the suit Ironman wears.

better late than never, praise the lord

I hope something comes out of this. I’m so fed up with Domenech, sometimes I question my faith in les bleus. Anyhow, I’ve said that ten thousand times. If he gets dumped before the world cup, we actually can look forward. My friend disagrees on my stand saying a new coach this late would mess everything up because everything will be different. Personally I disagree, domenech isn’t consistant, its almost like having a new coach every game.

Jeff, how helpful is this? Can this be what leads to Domenech’s downfall?

  • Jeff

It feels significant to me. Someone on the inside has said, “The game is up.”

Escalettes and Valentin are still opposed (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gWZMv2jy6I8R3vqSmk48KBAxlx4g), but if Chambily gets the vote he requested (by secret ballot according to L’Equipe.fr), then I hope Chambily is correct about other council (board?) members being with the French people.

  • Terry from Naples fl

domenech is haited even outside france, this will help with the image, and now we may actually have a chance in SOUTH AFRICA, the president of Bordeaux is not opposed for blanc to do double duties, anyway what has he won the wc final tactics in 2006 where not his but zidane’s .I do believe in karma and now it’s domenech’s turn.

  • http://marseille.theoffside.com/ Sarah

Thanks for posting Jeff! This is an interesting turn of events- but I to question the timing. It almost feels like he is trying to cover his own ass when this all goes South. The brave thing to do would have been to take a stand earlier– when something could have been done. I just don’t think Domenech is going anywhere before South Africa. And all of this commotion just makes it worse. I just feel like it is a bad situation, and the only thing we can do for the players is to get behind them regardless of who is coaching. Yes, the players have played badly– but in this environment can you blame them?

  • Jean-François

Completely unrelated, but USA scheduled 2 friendlies today for January and February, I really wish that France would do the same….

  • jeff

Chambily looks pretty isolated a day later. The only responses I’ve seen have been from Valentin and Escallates trying to dismiss the issue, with the suggestion being that they will be able to block a vote.

I think Domenech is about as effective as a manager as George W. Bush was in his last year in office. The melt down of the financial markets and France’s melt down against Ireland seem eerily similar to me. Bush was term-limited, so the analogy starts to fall apart, but we could have argued that it’s counter-productive not to carry on with the Bushes, and elected Jeb; but I’m glad we didn’t.

  • Steven

I like the analogy with Bush, but Domenech IS ‘a lame duck’ in that even the FFF is suggesting, by way of their apparent overture to Blanc, that our favourite whipping boy won’t be around after the summer.

If even the FFF doesn’t have confidence in the team’s chances than what’s the point of retaining him! Unless they expect failure and Domenech becomes a handy, ready-made excuse for that failure!

That way the big boys on the board protect themselves.

  • Steven

hah, I’m glad that the players are standing up for him and showing some support. If they have accepted the inevitable, maybe we should too? Clearly he is going to South Africa– so what approach is more likely to increase the team’s success- harsh, unending criticism or support? And, honestly, to say you want the French to fail just so the public can say they were right about Domenech is really sad- no wonder the players have trouble being motivated to play well for us!

But, I do find it hard to take Nico’s criticism seriously- it reaks of bias. The other French coaches basically wouldn’t play him as much as much as he wanted and Domenech does.

  • Jeff

I’m trying to find anything I can on the Chambily story, so I had read that in L’Equipe this morning. He also said that people look at him differently in France if he drives a big car (they can wreak havoc in medieval villages), and that the players know when they’ve played poorly (he admits they were dégueulasse – a great word (disgusting)- against Ireland).

To further stretch the analogy with the Bush administration, Nico, a starter with Doms, and frozen out previously, is a bit like someone in the Bush cabinet who would like to keep his job.

Nico would be extremely hard done by if Doms got the sack and he got dropped.

As Nico said, I will feel conflicted about having called for Doms to get the sack if he goes on to lead France to victory in the World Cup, but he’s inflicted enough on France and Les Bleus, and it would be great if he were replaced.

THOSE WHO STAND FOR DOMENECH SHOULD

not get paid unless the reach the semifinal let’s see with that if they have faith in their coach.I am so discussed with this guy, maybe after spain trashes France 3-0 they will make a move, READ MY LIPS france out first or 2nd round with domenech, anyone wants to bet me??????

  • jeff

Terry – I’m just not as confident about predicting the future. Maybe France will do really well in the World Cup even with Doms. It would be a boost, though, to go into the tournament with a manager who hasn’t consistently demonstrated that he’s a hindrance to France’s chances.

  • Jao

Same old, same old. Nothing will happen until after the World Cup. Escalettes is a staunch supporter of Domenech and despite all the tribulations, his support hasn’t waned. Their friendship is obvious (see their celebration after the victory over Ireland), yet no one calls him out on it. Chambily should have came out wayyyy earlier. This was expected, but not right at this moment in December.

  • Terry from Naples fl

GUYS what they should have done will not solve the problem, they can make it right Friday, anyone will do better. France is haited by everyone including the refs and fifa, and you guys think that they will do well, you are DREAMING. I love France, my daughter lives there,I use to go and watch L ‘OM back in the tapie days, I LOVE THAT TEAM, BUT MY HATRED FOR DOMENECH IS SO STRONG that (like 90%) of all the French people i speak with, they can support that system, the French would rather loose and say I TOLD YOU SO than see Domenech succeed,I know it’s strange but it is what it is, to late, give me a break, allez les bleus sans domenech

  • Terry from Naples fl

i mean they can’t suppoer that system

if he had balls, there is the best of france

Terry: I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I just don’t understand how you can hate a team that you love so much and how your hatred of one component of that team can make you want to punish every player on that team. It just seems like you like being right more than you like the French team. I agree with you (and everyone else) that Domenech is a terrible coach. I don’t like anything about him- his management style, his tactics or his personality. I think that France would perform better without him at the helm. But, I HOPE I’m wrong.

And, how can you pick a French team without Abidal- he is on fire for Barcelona. Saha’s body is giving out on him- even Everton is considering selling him because his body is just unreliable. Ribery…he is good. But when was the last time he played? And as an OM supporter, I would hope that you would consider Cheyrou, who is a rockstar in my eyes. I also would like to see Armand Traore (Arsenal) be given a chance – I think he has been playing well for Arsenal. And, Lloris has been great for France the past few games- he has kept us in the match a few times. I don’t understand why you want to demote him…
