The Goals from France 3-1 Tunisia

October 14th, 2008 | By: Laurie | 20 Comments »

First goal. Is it possible for a defender to screw up any worse than this? I don’t think so. And why the heck didn’t Mandanda stop it? (My co-blogger Chris and I were discussing the team the other day, and I said that we needed to replace the central defenders and probably once defensive midfielder. He said, “So basically the entire spine?” I said, “No. Just the lumbar region.” Now I’m thinking we need a new coccyx [goalkeeper] as well.)

And Titi comes roaring back. I thought this goal was absolutely gorgeous.

And Titi with #2.

And finally, Karim Benzema makes his presence felt at last. After the goal, note how while Thierry Henry is hugging Benzema, he motions Ben Arfa over and hugs him with the other hand. I am really pleased to see this kind of leadership from Titi. The team really needs it to bridge the gaps between generations and players.

So what were your thoughts on the game in general?

Those videos are fantastic. Iker91 is great.

“Extreme” is a word that comes to mind. Boumsong? What was that!?

The first France goal was the best – also extreme. The Benzema goal was quite good too. The second France goal looked offside-ish, but I couldn’t really tell.

For international management, considering that the national team can choose from all the players of the country, I can not abide a manager sticking with out-of-form players, so I’d say Mandanda and Boumsong both have to be dropped.

They could get a chance again, but it should be somebody else’s turn.

Domenech is a laughing stock when he can’t find a Frenchman who is in better form than Boumsong. There must be tens of defenders who could do much better. Scout the 20 teams in Ligue 1. Scout the 20 teams in Ligue 2. Bring back Zebina. Something.

This friendly, and I’ve only seen those highlights and read some people’s impressions; but it really fleshes out the some of the developing stories from Saturday’s World-Cup qualifier such as Domenech botching the defensive selection and Henry and Gourcuff looking great.

“oh la la boumsong”…not sure what else these announcers were expecting. Once again the “boumsong factor” comes into play. This guy is the most out of nowhere selection imaginable and then on top of it gets a start..again.

Jeff, I was thinking offside on that second goal as well. But the ref did not agree, apparently.

Fortunately he also didn’t agree when I thought Tunisia should have been awarded a penalty due to an aggressive Boumsong shoulder check in the box.

i’m a tunisian supporter so i just wanted to congratulate france on their victory, it was a good match. as for the second goal it appeared offside to me at first, but when i went back and paused it at the exact second the pass was made, it was clear that it was not offsides. so all three of the french goals were legitimate, not to mention beautiful. good luck in the future.

Zizoued – Really appreciate your comments. I didn’t see the game today, but I haven’t seen too much of Gourcuff trying to be like Zidane. I think he has his own style. He seems like a big guy, with just enough skill, but mostly a willing runner with a lot of enthusiasm; who has just happened to slot into the team brilliantly.

I was a Toulalan doubter at one point, but he’s doing so well now that I’m a little embarrassed.

——————

Jeff, Gourcuff has his own style. but if you had watched the game, you would understand where I’m coming from. He tried Zizouesque stepovers, Zizouesque roulette, etc. Gourcuff’s style is to keep it simple, and find another player to play quick 1-2, or to flick for the runs of other teammates (Zizou has this characteristics too). And, he definitely got a good shot from outside the box. If he doesn’t try to be a bit too confident and operates within his scope, he will be great. I got all the time in the world for him.

Don’t worry mate. I once doubted Vieira, and look what he has done over his career!

The second goal proves that Teary has the goal scoring instinct in him. the other thing is he either finishes them cleanly, or misses the goal by a short distance. He has learnt to play by doing clever runs in bursts since he lost his pace, and by learning to be more of a team player. If only, he didn’t play for Farca where he is treated rubbish by their so-called fans ffs. He could redeem and atone if he publicly ditches them and move in January.

and ribery makes benzema and evra acting childish which is good as well

Did you see the part when Ribery was running to the goal and he shot for the goal and than it was hands? ribery put his hands 3x up but the referee didnt saw it, but the hands-guy was really acting like a keeper with his hands

Mandanda looked horrified yesterday, even though it was a friendly. But I don’t fault him. He and Lloris are some of the most talented young keepers in the world, but they are too young to be starting. At this stage, a really bad game could destroy a young keeper’s confidence, possibly forever. They should be understudies, not starters. Frey should be #1, he has the experience.

@john, yea I agree with your young keepers thingy. But Frey doesnt want to play for France with DOmenech as coach. and since Domenech is coach till 2010.. that means no Frey and his trezeguet gang bang.

@Terry from Flo
I woudnt put malouda in and i wud let henry play on the left and not as lone striker. and i still think that domenech staying as coach is a worldwide disaster. And I wudnt put LLionis/Lloris ;p, we do badly need an older keeper (Freyy you weirdo)
and id put gorguf/gourcuff xp at another place but what does it matter? Domenech’s stars and astrology decides everything

Terry, I was just wondering what had happened to Escude also. I know he’s somewhere around that big 3-0, but that’s not that old for a central defender. How is he doing for Sevilla these days? Anybody know?

Jean Pierre: I know about Frey, but I meant that when Ray called up Mandanda and Lloris at the same time after the Euros and left Frey and Coupet out. Did something happen between Dom and Frey that he wasn’t called up? If nothing happened prior to that call-up, then Dom should have called Frey up as the #1 with Mandanda and Lloris behind him. But, I don’t know what really happened between the two. I know it’s too late now for Frey or Coupet. We are stuck with young keepers, since the only older, experienced keepers that could be considered aren’t that convincing; maybe Ulrich Rame of Bordeaux, but I’d rather have more talented younger keepers get a shot. Why is Dom only calling up two keepers? I’d like to see Itandje get a call-up.

Well, Frey did “retire” saying that he would rather focus on Fiorentina (though he did try to take it back a week later). That was when he wasn’t called up for the Sweden friendly back in early August. I’m guessing (totally hypothetically here) that Domenech wasn’t a big fan of that attitude, especially since a lot of the other regulars also didn’t get a call up. That Sweden game was mostly to give the younger kids a chance and the older ones a rest. Frey’s contention that he’d never get a chance under Domenech might have been what decided his fate. A player should always, ALWAYS, fight for his spot and never give up, except Frey did that, instead saying that he might reconsider when Domenech leaves.

Even though Domenech said in response to Frey that he’s the one who decides when players are retired, he might have decided to make a stand and put a stop to this nonsense. Plus Lloris and Mandanda getting experience now, while painful in the short term, are beneficial in the long term, especially because they have more potential than Frey anyway.

I’ve heard it suggested that Sylvain Distin of Portsmouth might make a good central defender for the NT. He’s 30 … but never capped–anyone know why?

Apparently French politicians are in an uproar about the jeering of La marseillaise by Tunisian supporters on Tuesday. The French sports minister annouced after talks with Escalettes and at the urging of Sarkozy that any future football match in France before which the national anthem is booed must be called off.

And what can one say about the “confirmation” of Domenech? That not much is really expected of the team beyond qualifying for the WC10–and if they go out then as they did last summer, well … so what! I think priority number 1 for Escalettes is probably just being re-elected in December … though for all I know this may be a mere formality.

Distin might be alright. I’m not sure why he never got a call up. He’s never played for a big club, so he’s never been in the spotlight very much. He’s pretty decent though. He would definitely be a better option than Boumsong, given Boumsong’s poor run of form.
