Vieira’s Out, Coupet’s Retiring (Maybe), and the Game Might Go to PENALTIES?!?!?
There’s a chance that either Jeff or Inara may post an actual preview tonight. I’ve just got a few interesting tidbits of news.
First, Grégory Coupet’s considering retirement. And after that game on Friday, is anyone else surprised? What an excruciating thing for a goalkeeper. How long has it been since he’s let in FOUR goals in one match?
When pressed on whether tomorrow night’s crunch match against Italy could be his last unless France achieve qualification, he said: “Honestly I don’t know. I only want to think about this after the European Championship.
“The only certainty for now is that I want to leave Lyon, as I announced on May 23, and that for my career to continue I’ll have to move abroad.
“But I’ll have to think about it (retirement). Therefore it’s true that, if we go out, the game against Italy could be my last.”
Poor Greg. I felt so sorry for him at World Cup when he lost the starting job to Barthez, and I wanted to see big things at a big tournament for him. Of course, I’m not going to rule it out. Great thigns could still happen. But four goals in one game is painful no matter how you look at it.
And in news that affects tomorrow, Patrick Vieira is officially out. Not particularly surprised by this one, either. I would say that Domenech is kicking himself over sending Mathieu Flamini home, but Flamini was always going to be the fourth choice anyway, after Makelele, Toulalan and Diarra. This wouldn’t have changed that. But let’s just hope that whoever plays tomorrow is up to the task.
And in the most interesting/depressing news I’ve read all day, if the game ends in a tie and Romania beats Netherlands, there’s a chance it may go to penalties. For THIRD place. Would this suck or what?
World champions Italy and France face each other in the final Group C match with both almost certainly needing a win if they are to make the last eight.
But if Romania beat Holland, ending the pair’s progress hopes, a draw would not separate the teams in the standings.
Therefore, a shoot-out would be played even though both sides would be out.
It would be the first time in tournament history two teams who have been eliminated from a competition would have to play out a penalty shoot-out for the purposes of determing future co-efficient points.
The co-efficient can affect a team’s seeding for future international tournaments.
If you want all the possible permutations for how the group could finish, here are the BBC’s insights. Just in case you really need to plan for the potentiality of both games ending in a draw.
Or you could do what I do and just think, “We’re going to win, so I don’t need to know anything else.”
Right?
