What about Mexico?

A quick reminder of France’s scheduled matches for this summer’s World Cup:

June 11th – Uruguay
June 17th (my birthday) – Mexico
June 22nd – The hosts, South Africa

Miguel from Mexico poses the following question: “Hello my dear French friends. I’m from Mexico your rival in next WC. I was wondering what do you think about Mexico? do you see us as a strong team or easy to beat?”

A fine question, that, and politely put.

My gut feeling is that France will advance out of the group. Like a lot of readers of this site, I live in North America with Mexico as a neighbor. I always hope they’ll do well. They don’t necessarily have a history of making it very far in recent World Cups, so with that in mind, and given my feeling that France will make it out of the group, I’d rate Mexico’s chances of advancing as 50-50. That’s just me, and the whole point of this post is to get some differing opinions.

The one player that a lot of us are familiar with is Carlos Vela who plays for Arsenal, who is a great player on his day, but hasn’t done enough to establish himself as a regular starter in the team. I have the impression on the one hand that he needs to be a big player for Mexico for them to do well (maybe I’m wrong about this), and on the other hand, he’s been struggling to even make the bench for his club for most of this season.

In a head-to-head matchup, there’s no question that France can lose to anybody, so I wouldn’t venture to predict anything for a specific match.

Barring unforseen injuries, Mexico looks like a strong side. They have a little depth and a good number of in-form players. If they play anything like the team that humiliated the USA national team last year in the continental tournament, they should look to advance.

I’m actually picking France and Mexico to finish 1 and 2 in the group and advance.

In the event that France chokes and crashes out in the group stage, which is entirely possible under that ass-clown Domenech, I pick Mexico and Uruguay to advance.

I was hoping to get a different draw, so that Mexico and France didn’t have to face each other in the group, not because of fear of elimination of either side, but because I have a lot of Mexican friends in the SF area who always invited me to play futbol with them at 16th at Bryant. We shared many a celebratory ceviche and beer after “Chinito Loco” scored a goal or won a challenge. Most of the Mexican footballers I played with and against worked under crappy owners of Italian restaurants in the city and secretly supported Francia (France).

    Allez les Bleus!! Allez Mexique!!

    Cheers!

The US team who lost to Mexico in the Gold cup 0-5 were i believe a “C” team. none of the big names were there. We did beat the “actual” US team a month later though 2-1.

As a Mexican NT supporter, i can honestly say that nothing is for certain in this group. Quite possibly the most competitive group in the world cup, no one can say that they’ll make it out for sure, not even France.

France on paper is the best team in the group, however most players dont seem “click” with each other, and it doesnt help that Domenech (sp?) is at the helm.

I really cant say much about Uruguay, only that they have two very deadly strikers, and they were able to tie France in the ‘02 world cup.

Mexico probably has the best momentum at the moment. Ever since Aguirre picked up Head coach, Mexico has only lost 2 games in 17 games. Granted, most of the teams they’ve played were from N. America, but this streak, if continued by May, will definitely help their morale/confidence when they are finally put to the test against England. We have great fowards (Vela, Gio Dos Santos, and a new comer from the Mexican league Javier Hernandez), and this will help Mexico be a force to be reckoned with in 2014.

South Africa arent that shabby either, especially when youre hosting the whole thing. Even though they dont really have that much attacking power, most people neglect that they’ll have a 12th person out there on the field… the ref. I believe SA will be getting alot of calls in their favor, and more so in the France game… since some people believe France shouldnt even been in the world cup. France is in whether people like it or not, and we just have to accept it.

All in all, no one can say that they’re “in the clear.” All i know is that this is quite possibly the most entertaining group (along with N. Korea, Ivory Coast, Brazil, Portugal, and we should be thankful we were given this group to watch, because afterall, in order to win the World Cup, you need to beat the best right?

  • John

is there any shot Samir will be headed to South Africa this summer?

  • Jeff

Maybe. He’s been a starter for France in the past, and done well. If he does really well for Arsenal – like leading them to a league and champions league double, then probably yes.

    coconut:
Thanks for the Mexico insight. It’s too bad they’re in the same group as France because I want to cheer for them both, and the USA.

    France, Mexico, USA!!!

We cant get results out of teams like Ireland, Serbia, Romania, etc. What should make me think that France will do better against Mexico. Im a huge fan of Les Bleus but honestly I just have pessimism at this point. Unfortunately its going to be another Euro 2008 or WC 02. I wish it werent the case, with all the talent France has, a good manager like Wenger could have it all click.

  • Ruben

i just think that all the mexico players are clicking right now mostly the line-up for the second half against New Zealand we saw a lot of speed in the second half without cuah slowing everybody down….
i just feel that france is good but then again how are we sure south africa dosnt come in pumped into this tournament every one is counting them out but im still guessing the two teams that make it out of GROUP A are MEXICO, and idk i think personally who ever wins the game on the 17th will in the end up taking the group…..

  • Foreverzidane

Just imagine my fellow Bleus supporters, under a different regime of coaching staff who could ignite a fire under these talented prima donnas it would be no contest, and advantage France against all the teams in their group. No other team has the number of players who are currently playing for the top teams in the European leagues than France. Being exposed to that level of competition should account for this teams superiority? 100% resounding YES!
Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way with this group.
It certainly works with Spain, Brazil, and Germany…
Mexico is a great competitor and they honor the chance of playing for their country more than the French men.
Just look at the passion they demonstrate before their matches. They exude the national pride which is void
    with Les Bleus!

I actually hope Mexico finishes 1st, France 2nd, South Africa 3rd, and Uruguay 4th..

I don’t think the SA and Uruguayan sides are deep enough to go the distance with Mexico or France. Their only hope is that France chokes, which, given the recent history under Domenech, is a likely scenario.

Good luck to Mexico because they’re actually competing in this tournament with a chance to progress. They have a real coach, good players, team spirit, and good depth… I wish France was in that position, with all the talented players like Gignac, Henry, Diarra, Lloris, Sagna, Gourcuff, Ribery, Evra (if he plays good for country and not just for Man U.), Cisse, etc. and if someone not-named-Escude-or-Ciani starts in central defense…

I’ll always be for France, but something tells me that disaster is looming ’round the corner. In any case, if the team can somehow gel and succeed in Domenech’s wasteful formations, then they have a chance.

    Allez Les Bleus!!

  • Augustin

    actually

    1 Uruguay
    2 Mexico
    3 France
    4 SA

  • Aditya

I think Mexico always raises their game against top teams and so they won’t be an easy opponent.

I doubt France will score more than a goal against Uruguay or Mexico or concede more than one. So it will all be a matter of who scores first.

  • http://www.adidas.fr/om Justin C.

Things can change in a few months and I know that. My heart says France will win the group, but if I had to place money on it knowing only what I know today:

    1 Mexico
    2 France
    3 Uruguay
    4 SA

Mexico is one of these teams we’ll have to be careful about. I think against France they will disrupt a lot the midfield building process, and be ready to pounce on whatever they can counter.
My guess is that the current French team will seek to not get scored upon before trying to score, a little bit like when in 2006 we played Switzerland and South Korea and we ended up with two ties(even with Zinédine). So I’d say there might be a few tied games and somehow we’ll pull through on the number of goals scored. My hope is that, after that, we will play more freely, just like in 06.

I like Mexico a lot and always root for them – so it’ll be hard to see them against France, I won’t be able to choose. I just wish them the best of luck. I always remember that one of the best wc games in recent memory was the 2006 Argentina-Mexico game, brilliant stuff to watch.

Haven’t Vela and dos Santos become more and more influential in the national team in recent games? That’s been my impression. They are a fantastic pair to watch. The US fans go on about their “C” team being beaten by Mexico in the Gold Cup – forgetting that the Mexican team was not at full strength either.

If France goes out on the pitch like they did against Spain, then I’m afraid Mexico has the talent to make France pay. They may not be Spain but they have a lot of talent, skill on the ball, team unity, an enjoyment of the game that the French players don’t have and an all out patriotic determination to win.

There are teams I don’t want France to lose to (like England) but I could deal with losing to Mexico.

I would say Mexico and France are the strongest teams of the group but having South Africa as the Host that changes it all… SOUTH AFRICA AND MEXICO Will advance to the next round.
