Can the oldies still cut it?

May 10th, 2006 | By: Chriso | 1 Comment »

Raymond Domenech will announce the French World Cup squad this Sunday at 11.30am on French tv. e’s got a few interesting choices to make with the likes of Ribery, Pires, Micoud, wondering whether they’ll get a call up.

While he’s thinking over his last selections he might like to know that in World Cup’s going back to the last one in Germany in 1974, the team that won had a squad with an average age of 27 and an average age of the oldest squad member of 33.6.

We don’t know the complete 23 Domenech will pick yet, but going on who’s played recently France will be fielding a team that will be just over the magic 27 and the deeper they get into the competition maybe the more that will show.

But there´s no doubt about it that France needs e.g. Zidane. Without him they wouldn´t even come to Germany.
