Cheyrou: Early promise

February 13th, 2006 | By: Chriso | 1 Comment »

Sometimes a player never makes the impact that was quite expected from him early in his career. Bruno Cheyrou could fall into that category.

Called the new Zidane by former France coach Gerard Houllier when he signed Cheyrou for Liverpool in 2002, he never really produced anything for Liverpool despite a promising start and only played in 31 games before going on loan to Marseille and last summer to Bordeaux.

Cheyrou says he’s changed to a more defensive position and is happy playing there even if it’s not as high profile as his previous attacking role.

Whether the ‘new Zidane’ ever gets to replace the old Zidane with the national team I doubt.
