Hit and miss in the Champions League
A mixed evening for some of France’s players in the Champions League last night. Zinedine Zidane looked pretty ordinary playing for Real Madrid, who went out of the competition after they could only draw with Arsenal.
The rest of the Galaticos were also poor but Zidane didn’t create anything, looked very one paced and after follow Frenchman Mathieu Flamini snapped at his heels for an hour he switched sides of the pitch but didn’t have much more luck.
Thierry Henry played well for Arsenal as the lone striker, sometimes going against four defenders on his own but still going close. Robert Pires came on as sub for the last half hour and almost scored towards the end from his own half when Casillas, the madrid keeper, went up for a corner and the ball cleared to Pires whose fifty yard shot just held up as it reached the Real goalline and Roberto Carlos cleared.
Lyon were flying in their game against PSV Eindhoven, winning 4-0( 5-0 agg), and look like a really difficult opponent for who ever gets them in tomorrow’s draw. They’re also running away with the French league and the likes of Wiltord, Abidal , Coupet and Malouda should go into the World Cup with a lot of confidence.
