Les Blanc’s

The French players got a Hollywood welcome in Munich when Thierry Henry and Lilian Thuram met up with director Spike Lee who’s a friend of Henry’s and has been to Highbury to watch him play for Arsenal a few times.

Maybe Spike might think about making The Zinedine Zidane Story, it’s got all the ingredients if July 9th provides the happy ending.

Les Bleus will be wearing white again tomorrow night, Portugal are the ‘home’ team at the Allianz Arena, which might be lucky because they beat Spain and Brazil in white.

The man in charge of the semifinal will be Uruguayan Jorge Larrionda, and I just wonder if FIFA will have a word with him before the game to remind him how many French players are already on a yellow card and to go easy handing out any more.

Sepp Blatter has been talking about introducing three yellow cards before suspension and I’m sure the prospect of France getting to the final with perhaps, Zidane, Vieira or Ribery suspended will have spurred him into trying to make sure the situation doesn’t come up in future.

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhyesss

i respect ur portuguese pride but france will make me muy muy proud still and beat portugal and win the cup.

  • antonio

Portugal crushed the white clad teams of Holland and England. Now it may beat France. It’s just superstition.
As for Spike Lee, I am afraid it’s “inverted racism”. He should apply his talents to create a story of harmony between black and white people

Legio I Italica destroyed the German barbarians and are marching victorius towards Berlin. Legion IX Lusitana under the command of Iulius Figus is engaging the enemy tommorow with orders to destroy Carthage and punish Hannibal. Will we have a Pax Romana on Sunday in Berlin or will Hannibal try and upset the natural order of things?
For my part I hear the legions marching. Ave Roma!

  • chris

    @ antonio:
portugal didn’t ‘crush’ the netherlands OR england…you obviously realize those wins were flukes, but you try to convince yourself otherwise anyways cuz ur portugese, and thats ok…
and figo is sooo dissapointing, i mean comeon…at his age you’d think he would stop w/ the crazy diving, bad sportsmanship (vs Ned.) and being a fag overall, but nooo, he plans on doing this shit until he’s 40
anyways, i like how the french have found their flow in the past two games, but i still kinda hope that portugal wins tomorrow so that italy has an ez final :)
    lol

    FORZA ITALIA!!

  • John

What’s that? Larrionda is calling the game? Several French players have yellow cards? Wow, France is screwed then, because one thing you can damn well count on is Larrionda ruining the game with too many foul calls. Too bad the Germany-Italy ref can’t do it again tomorrow. Oh well.

It figures that Spike Lee is a French fan, what else is new that skunk. Besides, I don’t think he is a soccer fan but a soccer or is that French-African player lova.

Portugal is going to make Spike and the Franch nation cry me a river.

  • Karma

During all France matches we have seen scores of Spanish, Brazilian and now Portuguese fans bashing and badmouthing the French.

Why can’t you guys say something positive? Do you feel proud when you read what you write? Would your friends and family members be proud of you if they read your comments? Surely you would be ashamed and that is why you write anonymously foul comments.

Read my lips….Karma…it does play a role.

    Good luck.

How sad that fellow fans of the Portuguese team feel the need to come here and bad-mouth the French, and Spike Lee of all people, as if the man is not allowed to have a friend or support a team!

Get with it, folks. Portugal may win or it may lose. But this dissing of the French fans on their own board before the game ever starts is undignified.

  • Aurelio

It’s undignified to come here and diss the French fans. Come on, folks, let’s support our team, but do it without resorting to this.

  • SERB

whew boy ! the italians are on fire … I am rooting for France to win the whole thing but italy will be tough nut to crack I think .

but Portugal get out of here … you couldn’t even score against 9 man England … one thing you can try … get rid of Miguel ! but won’t do you any good .

  • Gordon Bennett

After seeing England lose the other day I thought nothing could lift my spirits until later that day when I watched Zidane leading a magnificent French side that reminded me of everything that enchanted me about this beautiful game the first time, watching France play to victory in 1998.

Allez Les Bleus, you have many, many friends who will be suporting you.

And, by the way, for those of you who must leave snarky, bigoted remarks, I should add that when I watch them play, what I see is eleven Frenchmen playing magnificent football, no more, no less. It shocks and disgusts me to learn that so many are so blind as to see it otherwise.

  • FantasticItalians

Italians will have 24 hours more than the other team to rest and that can be crucial.

I am convinced that France has the best attack in this world cup, but it seems that Italy has the edge. However the chances are 50/50.

I like the French team very much. They are really tough to beat and Italians must provide an excellent display of soccer to win, otherwise les bleus will take home their second cup.

Portugal? Don’t think they have the tradition and strength to go to the final.

My forecast: Italy-France 1-0 on free kick.

  • http://phronesisaical.blogspot.com Helmut

Well, Les Blanc’s, you make a lots of noise, i have seen nothing good on you, could you please shut up.

ha! ha! i hope will win the world cup.

    Old fellows.

  • Eric

I can’t believe they are having Uruguayan Jorge Larrionda ref the game. I am a huge France fan and this really makes me mad. The two games I’ve seen him ref were the USA vs Italy (horrible job) and France vs Switzerland (another horrible job). What is he even doing there, I thought only countries that made the world cup could have referees represented??? arrggghhh!! I really hope he doesn’t ruin the game but I might be hoping for too much.

  • Tascien

The point is, this yellow card system is screwed.

Why should a yellow card benefit the team you are not even playing against?

really? if France comits a foul against Portugal, Italy should not benefit and vice versa.

  • Tascien

    Oh, one note…

I like how bloggers here are ignoring racist remarks from idiot “pierre”. good job.

  • Hannah

I agree with Tascien – the yellow card system is screwed up. Each game should be judged individually and the cards should not be allowed to overlap to other games.

If I were a France fan (sorry but I am an Italian one ;) ) the yellow card situation would scare me.

Every game Portugal has been in has been a game of where lots of cards have been given out (see Netherlands and England matches).

I think it must be Portugal’s strategy to provoke other players to commit fouls (remember Rooney?) and to dive etc. to get the ref’s attention.

Now that the game means so much, I wouldn’t be surprised if Portugal goes after Henry or Zidane.

And if it’s true Eric that the ref is a bad one I don’t have hope that tomorrow’s game will be a clean one.

Which after today’s classic game between Germany & Italy would be a shame. I really hope that the France-Portugal game will be decided by great play and not because of the way it was reffed.

But I have a feeling that even if France wins the game against Portugal they won’t be 100% for the final against Italy. And they will need to be if they want to beat them.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.com snow

zidane n henry are the great ever football player in the world. go FRANCE!

  • Tascien

Tension mounting… I just want the game to start and that’s it!

  • joe

it will truly be a sad game if Zidane is carded. NONE of Zidane’s 3 yellow cards have been true, fair and “clear” yellow cards. If he is given one during this game, we will know, for sure, that we are watching Zinedine Zidane’s last game.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, especially if France wins. A France final without Zidane would be a horrible way to end one of the best careers in soccer history.

  • http://www.visitmaldives.com Mohamed

admirable, committed, devoted & outstanding – I have no doubt that France has got the quality to keep the ball roll roling once again, zezu playing like a teenager supported by TH, Malouda, Viera should give zezu a head high departure from the world’s local sport. I am looking forward to watch another phenominal zezu game together with the rest of his gang.

I do respect the portuguese for their performance during the cup so far… however looking at the come back France made looks like they are up for it.

    All the best France

  • Toast

Good luck France – may the best team win.

  • Germaine

The problem is that you don’t need to touch the portuguese players to see them falls and grin in pain, when their victim has been yellow cardes they then go back to their game as if nothing happened. I liked the game yesterday as the referee, a Mexican I think? did not interfere with the game. And it was funny to see players holding their knee in “pain” but the referee asking them to get back on their feet. The face they made!

  • Toast

Don´t come again with the diving talk…

Do you remember Henry vs. Spain? Selective memory I see… At least Figo got contact to his face…

I see you are already trying to find excuses for a defeat…

I think both teams are great, both deserve to be where they are, and that it will be a wonderful match. Whoever thinks that Portugal as been undefeated for 17 games because of theatre – grow up.

  • Smelly Cat

I just don’t understand how the people atack the portuguese players and after defend players (that I like too) like Henry (diving) and Zidane (red cards and agressions in WC games).

It’s sad to listen less than 24 hours from the game a player like Gallas in the press conference saying all that sh!t about portuguese players knowing what the team mates do when teir are in the pitch.

We are a small country and the image that we have of this WC is that England and France are affraid of us and just make great pression upon the referees before the games.

I would just love to see C. Ronaldo or Deco or Figo scoring a goal and then all the team run to a side of the pitch and dive (all the players). You know, I loved to see when Fowler after a goal that he scored put in his knees and snifed the white line of the pitch cause were saying that he consume cocaine.

    Portugal 15 – 0 France

  • http://www.triworks.net Rui Villas

May the best team win. It will surely be an interesting match to watch. I’m a Portuguese supporter…but I’m not here to attack the french.

Whoever gets trugh, will have Italy as adversary. I think the beste teams in the tournament are France and Portugal and Italy won’t be a problem after this game. Maybe the champion will be decided later tonight and not on the final.

Please stop all the crap you have been writing. Just post your oppinion and don’t attack anyone.

  • Toast

You might remember a link a while ago, with the diving, fouling, etc. stats.

    Here it is:

    http://www.informationbuilders.com/ontheball/index.html

They seem objective, and are English.

    Let´s look at dives :
    1st: Italy – 28 dives
    2nd: Mexico (Wow – and they played 4 games) – 20 dives
3rd: Holland (AKA the good guys vs. Portugal) – 19 dives
    4th: Argentina – 17 dives
5th: Germany (surprise surprise – ballack was all over the ground yesterday) – 17 dives
    (…)

Portugal in 7th – 17 dives (same as Germany)
    France in 17th – 10 dives

Ok – now Tantrums (crying, etc.)

Portugal is up in 2nd – with 22 tantrums. I agree they are actors. You know who is worst? France in 1st, with 23 tantrums. “Strong men” England are in 4th with 14 tantrums.
7th and 8th are Germany and Italy, with 13 and 10 tantrums.

    Interesting.

    Bullying ref? Let´s see…

Croatia are champs in ref intimidation. 5 attempts.

2nd through 5th all have 4 attempts. Of course, one of the teams are “Public enemy nº1″ Portugal – who are the other 3 “bandidos”? France, Italy and Paraguai…

Now let´s look at Fake injuries. You know, rolling around in the ground like you´re having a baby, etc.

    1st: Paraguai. 12.
    2nd: Argentina. 9.
    3rd: Italy. 8.
    4th: Portugal. 7.
    (…)
    12th: England. 3.
    20th: France. 2.

You say Portugal plays a physical match? Let´s look at fouls:

    1st: Ukraine. 108 fouls (!)
    2nd: Argentina. 100 fouls.
    (…)
    5th: France. 90 fouls.
    6th: Germany. 90 fouls.
    (…)
    9th: Portugal. 89 fouls.

Is Portugal any worse than the other teams then? Grow up. Portugal hasn´t played a “normal” game since the game with Iran.
Vs. Mexico (who eventually held Argentina to a 1-0 game), we used the “B” team. 2-1 Portugal
Vs. Holland, Ronaldo taken out early, all hell breaking loose. Most of the game played with 1 player less than the opposition, 1 – 0.
Vs. England, without 2 starters, and unable to break a strong English defense that battled bravely when reduced to 10 men (partly because of Deco´s absence) 0 – 0 (won on PKs).

Vs. France – we have a full fit squad again. Something we don´t have for some time now. We are the underdogs (I like it that way).

But cheats??? Read the numbers, not the tabloids.

Cheers – good luck France and Portugal – hope there are no incidents (to either side).

  • Smelly Cat

    Well said Toast

But I still would love to see all the team dive when scoring a goal!!!

  • Maximilien

ALLEZ LES BLEUS! J’Y CROIS, ON Y CROIS, ZIZOU, THIERRY, RIBERY, VIERA, ALLEZ LES GAS!

My only hope is that our team will be as thirsty to win as they were against the Spaniards and Brazilians. What an honor it would be for all of us, Portugese French or from any nation, to watch Zidane play his last game in the World Cup Final. Les BLEUS have had the toughest road, and after beating the two teams they’ve beaten, they deserve to make the final, if not to win it. The Italians have three stars on their jerseys, and although the Portuguese don’t have one, this generation of players will likely be the last chance for our team to earn that second star.

Merci Zizou, quoi qu’il arrive on t’aime tous, tu es une inspiration pour nous tous. Merci pour l’honeur, la gloire, ta passion et ta vigueur… j’espere te voir en finale. I HOPE! I BELIEVE ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!!!!!!

Good luck to France tonight – I think the majority of England will be supporting you.

The Portuguese will uae any tactic to win. Their first aim will be to spoil the game – I guess they will target ZZ as he is on a yellow.

I hope you win comfortably and the eferee is not conned by dirty tricks…

I think people are underestimating Portugal (and I was one of them).

I take back what I said about the cheap shots etc but that was left over from the England match (sorry but Ronaldo was a little sneak!).

I am an Italian fan and both Portugal or France will not be easy opponents.

Just when people have counted out either France or Portugal they have found a way to win. I never thought France would beat Spain or Brazil or that Portugal would beat Netherlands or England. Both teams are playing strong and is why today’s game will be a tough one.

And Portugal has Scolari as coach who won the cup last time with Brazil. That is not something to be overlooked.

It’s funny – they are repeating some highlights from the Euro 2000 on TV. In 2000 France beat Portugal to go to the final against Italy (sound familiar??). But they said there was a controversy at the end where Zidane scored on a free kick to beat Portugal.

I hope today’s game doesn’t end the same way (meaning not by free kicks or penalities) but is decided by the players (not the refs).

I think with the caliber of players on both sides, today’s game should be an exciting one. After yesterday’s game too, I think this has been one of the best World Cups in a long time which is great for the game :)

  • zidaneisking

All teams dive, all teams playact, all teams occasionally use violence. Not all teams rely on these tactics to the extent that Portugal does (and I think Italy too). Almost every time Portugal is in a match, some controversey erupts, there’s some violent reaction, there’s a near-brawl, anger and bitterness are generated among viewers and players, and players walk off the pitch NOT embracing, exchanging t-shirts or congratulating each other. Yes Henry dived in the match against Spain. And yes Frings punched out an Argentinian player in the middle of a confusing melee that he didn’t even start. But Figo deliberately headbutted a guy in anger and got no disciplinary action. Portugal’s strategy will be to provoke and get players kicked off the pitch. Yesterday French player William Gallas was quoted as saying exactly that, explaining that his team are going to have to play very carefully and not get provoked by Portugal’s tactics. I’m afraid to see what Portugal is going to do to Zidane. I’ll never forget what they did to Pele in a match where he had to leave the pitch and wound up in the hospital.

We are a nation of immigrants who have come together despite our differences to build a great nation.

While we may not be liked around the world because of our President’s policies, never ever think for one moment that we are a den or racicizm and xenophobia. Anyone is always welcomed to the U.S.A!!! It sickens me that these morons think they speak for me and other Americans. THEY DO NOT!!!

Congrats to the French. They played a great game today as did the Portugese. It was a tug of war of a game, very exciting.

We are a nation built by immigrants. Everyone in America has roots some place else.

As for the game, congrats to both France & Portugal. It was a great tug-of-war game.

I am seeing all the American medias say that the refery should have called a penatly against France when Ronaldo dove. What a bunch of CACA! Diving Divas indeed. Les Bleus didn’t play as well as they did vs. Brazil, but it was awesome, and good enough to win.

    Goals: France 1 – Portugal 0
    Dives: France 1 – Portugal 10

Spike Lee is the most anti-Italian film director in the
    world. He loves to perpetuate
    the worst Italian stereo-types,
    in his films.

    Knowing that he has friends

going to make the inevitable Italian victory that much sweeter. The Italian juggernaut
