Money talks

February 2nd, 2006 | By: Chriso | 1 Comment »

The majority of French players at this years World Cup will be playing for clubs outside of France, the financial position of Ligue 1 making it impossible to compete with the monied clubs in England, Spain and Italy. Now the government, under EU pressure, is relaxing laws that stopped clubs floating on the stock market and some teams think this will help them bring in new revenue and hang onto their better players.

Quite a few English teams have floated on the markets and it hasn’t always produced the financial godsend the fans have been hoping for, but if it helps the French league to improve their position it has to be worth a try.

For the size of the country and the amount of talented players it produces France should have one of the best leagues in Europe.

That was the battle-horse of Lyon president,Jean Michel Aulas for long years and is still not satisfied, because the only teams who can benefit from it are the ones who own their stadium, which concern only two teams!
But from the season 2006-2007,the clubs of Ligue1 will get advantage of the new contract made for the next three years with french TV(canal+)who spend a fortune(the equivalence of the money spent by Sky for the Premiership)for a Ligue1 who is as attractive as Tony Blair in shorts!
