Seems like yesterday

June 26th, 2006 | By: Chriso | 29 Comments »

Tomorrow’s the 27th June and France are playing Spain in the knockout stages of the World Cup. I wonder if there are any superstitious players on the team who think the date’s a good omen.

It’s certainly the date of one of the best days in French football history, 27th June 1984, when they beat Spain 2-0 in the final of the European Championships in Paris, the high point for Michel Platini and his generation in the national team.

Platini had a great championship for France, scoring in every game, nine in total. A 2-0 win against Spain on Tuesday night would be a nice way to celebrate the anniversary.

France is showing now how it would be impossible for them to REALLY win the world cup. The 98 final was a CLEAR set up. It was as if brazil didn´t enter the field. They didn´t play that game. Brazil should now be chasing their 7th star.

It would be quite controversial if France pulled off an upset against Spain. Here’s hoping that Zindane exits gracefully. :P

As an outsider, I would like to see Spain thru because they have been playing the more exciting football, but on the other hand, I would like to see France vs. Brazil for a reply of 98…my bet is on Spain tho.

Eagleeye: You can’t say France was 98′champion coz brazil played shit.
As I know, WC is not just a final. And I hope that for Spain.Coz If is, Spain never won a thing.

France is still a country? I’ve read about them in history books of course… but haven’t heard anything about them lately…except something about ‘youths’ burning cars or some such… too bad they don’t speak Spanish or they would know how to say VIVA LA RECONQUISTA!

when USA will be able to go to the final, they will found out there is no such thing like set up game. the winner is the one who win the game. I will pass around this comment to my grand children when USA win in 2030.

[...] 15 minutes to go: Amazingly, Spain and France have never met in the World Cup before, but they did meet on this date in 1984 and it was a glorious day for the French. Will we see history repeated? Chris O over on the France team blog makes the case for Zidane starting on the bench. This will never happen, of course, but it’s an interesting thought. Is there a point where he becomes a liability? [...]

Good call, Veron!

Eagleeye – you may as well go back to American football. You obviously don’t know anything about soccer, despite your big mouth.

That was a lovely game. Allez les Bleus!
