Marcotti is also a personal friend of Materazzi's and thinks he's a terrific guy, so I refuse to read anything he writes.

I was hoping flamini would get a chance to play against england as well as mexes. Those two would make an excellent contribution to the team.

Right. It certainly would not hurt to tidy up the midfield. Viera doesn't have much time to get back in shape. If Ribery and Malouda weren't too busy securing their spots on the list by making all those individual runs and crossed more then maybe the strikers would be able to take higher percentage shots on goal and convert more. Both articles were right on the money. I was dissapointed when I saw first hand what Julien Pretot illustrated in his article. It is hard to fathom that l'EDF has taken an "every man for himself" approach on the field but June is not that far away and I guess teamwork will have to take a backseat until then.

I'm not so worried about Thuram and Makalele, more Vieira and Henry, or a system where the driving force from midfield is supposed to come from an injured, out-of-form, out-of-shape, low-on-confidence Vieira, while better options are ignored. I say this as a massive fan of Vieira, and we know he can put together a great performance: Togo 2006. Can he put in consecutive great performances? It sounds like Toulalan and Makalele did enough against England to keep their positions.

I tend to think Domenech has his methods. He picks players based on how well they complement one another and sticks with them. As a result these players know each other well and play more like a club team than a national team. And it is true that the French players play better in the NT than their club teams a majority of the time. He is taking risks, though, as the players age, he needs to integrate youngsters into the team. He is lucky that he has a deep pool to choose from and time before he has to replace the old workhorses like Makalele and Thuram who probably cannot be relied on for 2010.
