The Best Team Won

Allez Les Bleus! What a brillant game France played, a totally deserved win.

Zinedine Zidane showed tonight what a great player he is, completely bossing the game, looking in total control and enjoying it. What a contrast to Ronaldinho who was pretty anonymous though that was not entirely his fault, France were just set up as a much more balanced team.

A solid defence with Makelele and Vieira in front of them never let the name’s of Brazil unsettle or get by them. I can’t remember Barthez having to make any direct saves from the World Cup’s greatest scorer Ronaldo or Ronaldinho, Kaka made no impact and neither did Adriano or Robinho when they came on.

France can win this World Cup. Portugal were very ordinary in their quarterfinal and I can’t see them getting any better in the semi. Against Germany or Italy I think the boys in blue will fancy their chances.

This is very galling as a life-long Brazil fan to admit, but France outplayed Brazil in every way. Congratulations and best of luck against Portugal.

  • Bobbio

Zizou should have got that goal from the Ribery cross, damnit! That would have made it PERFECT!

  • Bernardo

Les Bleus all the way! I’m rooting for France to win it all. What a great showing today!

  • Kaiser Sousa

I think Zidane was simply majestic today. No surprise really class is timeless.
However don’t you think it strange that Ronaldinho was below par. Maybe it’s because Deco plays next to him at Barcelona.
Portugal will be at full strength against France.
Expect a great match because we Portugal will want to settle some old scores.

  • quahogian

Great for France. I am so glad they won fair and square, there should be no argument that France clearly outplayed Brazil while Brazil played well. Now France owes it to themselves and the whole world to keep this level of the game.

  • squiggle

After such a scrappy start to the tournament, the French now look as much like a team as Argentina did against Serbia and Montenegro. Happiness.

  • quahogian

Sousa is right, my eyes lit up after I saw how Zizou in such laid back manner outplayed most other hyped up players. His passes and kickz were so smooth, it was wonderful to see such class. I hope so much that he keeps playing this well through the next two matches ;)

  • Rain

    Congratulations France.

You started not that good and went improving game by game.

Today you deserved to win with a magnificent Zidane (that I would expect reviews his decision to quit football) against another great team as Brasil.

Today Brasil did not play well, but this does not diminish how a good team they are, neither it changes the fact that the outplayer was France.

Good luck for your next game!

And thanks too for the people who live in many country!! gros bisous!!!!!

ps: I’M VERY EXCITED AND HAPPY!! THIS NIGNT I DRINK “LE CHAMPAGNE”!!! lol

  • Marc

They deserved to kick that listless and arrogant team out of the tournament. They just deserved it!
I was in the first row when it came to mock the French team as a bunch of old, saturated players that already had their best days nearly a decade ago. I have to apologize, I was wrong.
If Germany fails to get the cup (they won’t ;) ), then France has to get it. And I never thought I would write this…

  • P

Like my friend commented..SPAIN, ENGLAND, Ronnie and ofcourse Holland should all go to Zidane’s house to learn what playing in the WC is all about

  • iñigo

france is a really good team, they deserved to win but so did Ghana wen they played against Brazil, i think that they deserved to win more against brazil than against spain.

  • Boogie

    Zidane incredible…

  • Bell

It was nice to see France win. They are a class team w/ wonderful palyers. I hope they win it all.

  • sean

congratulations les bleus! your team continues to rise and play great – henry played better today and i expect he’ll have his two best games to come:

    france over portugal
    italy over germany
france over italy and the greatest player in the game get his due – ZZ

  • marcos

y did spain lose against france?did france really deserve to win?

  • marcos

    answer meeee!!

  • marcos

    come on sumbody answer meee

Part of me want to strangle you to death, and part of me know you had a great display of football, so here’s to you.

Congratulations, France, on a great match and a great performance by Zidane!

  • Scorpiio

    ZINEDINE ZIDANE!!! THE GREATEST!!!
VIVA LA FRANCE…FRANCE ALL THE WAY. IN THE WISE WORDS OF RUDY T “NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE HEART OF A CHAMPION”
    LETS GOOOO FRANCEEEE!!!!!!!!!

  • Hiren

That’s what I’m talking about! GO TEAM!!
Like I said before, I can’t believe Brazil were favourites for this one. This isn’t 2002 and the quality of the football across all teams isn’t as low as it was then.
The best team won, and how! Pure fcking domination. Respect to Viera, Thuram and Mekelele. Zidane didn’t put a foot wrong the whole match, confidence most people wouldn’t expect against Brazil. Heck, his touches in the first 20 minutes probably set the game up for France confidence wise for the entire match.

    Till Wednesday Then!

  • CaliforniaKid

So much for all of those predictions stating Brazil would “rip the French apart.” Quite the contrary actually. Brazil is lucky they only lost by 1. With the way France was playing today, they could’ve scored more. Like I said after Spain, Les Bleus are back as an international superpower.

Portugal must be scared to face a France that just knocked over the Giant of all football. France over Portugal, and the only way Zidane is going home to France is with another trophy.

The French can take on and beat either the Germans or the Italians, with they way they have been playing lately. Allez les Blues!!!!

    Vive la France!!

  • Cedric

    ALLEZ LA FRANCE!!!!
IT was a great game from Les Bleus tonight. Their midfields were amazing by controlling the game and disrupting the Brazilians. Great teamwork!
I am so happy that Zidane showed us all how great he is. One of the greatest player ever. Thank you Zizou!
I have noticed that a few Brazilians were a little cocky during this World cup so I hope that they have learned a lesson in football. Putting 11 stars on the field won’t win you games. You have to play as a team. What happened to the beautiful Samba football?
Merci les Bleus! Maintenant, il faut aller au bout!!
    Now, let’s win it all!

  • John

Wow! As a fan of Brazil, I have to say that France totally deserved to win. The French defense in front of their own goal was simply awesome. And what can you say about Zidane? He was clearly the best player on the pitch.

I would not mind seeing France win the Cup after watching that display today. Good luck!

  • LiverpoolFC

Congrats france its france 98 all over again :) well done

  • Cedric

Marcos, why did spain lose against france?did france really deserve to win?

Spain had a good team that day but France was just a little bit better than them and showed more experience. Spain controlled the ball 60% of the time but did not do much with it. France had the ball a lot less but scored 3 goals. They were more realistic and took advantage of their scoring chances.
Spain is a very young team and they will learn from that defeat. I think they’ll have very good Euro 2008 and maybe even a great WC 2010.
Having said all that, ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!!!

  • nick

france v italy final. Time for italy’s revenge from six years ago in that great euro final.

  • Bob

I’ve put £200 on Germany to win the cup. Thank you.

  • Rain

28 comments and only one french flag. Are the french drinking, sleeping or leaving abroad? :)

  • suniis

This proved that France is Brazil’s arch enemy.
They haven’t beat us in like 50 years in official matches…
Zidane showed France the way, and the rest of the team played AS A TEAM, and that’s why they beat brazil.
It’s all about Heart when you play football, and I think Brazil hasn’t played with heart in about 20 years…
Congratualtions to Zizou for being such and incredible player (who shows up when we need him), and to France for knocking out the Favorite of EVERY SINGLE WORDL CUP!!!

  • suniis

edit: sorry for typos (blame the excitement!)

  • Ryan McFarlane

    Yep France completey outplayed Brazil.
    Question though….
what is up with Henry. Thats twice in two games that he has pretended to have been hit in the face.
They will have to change the “Chaos Thoery” to..
“It has been said something as small as the flutter of a butterfly’s wing can ultimately cause Thierry Henry to grab has face and cry foul”.

  • Luis

Great game France. A well deserved victory.

  • Rolf Habich

    Congratulations France !

    Superb play, deserved victory!

    Vive l’ Europe :-)

  • Marcy

A great performance by FRance. The score (1-0) does not reflect at all what happenned on the pitch.

France made Brazil look really bad, actually, hopeless. They could have scored another few goals – had they really tried.

Zizou was at his vintage best. What a player.

I just hope FRance does not repeat this performance against Portugal.

Hopefully, it was only a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

By the way MARCOS – Spain and France played a very even match. France prevailed maybe because of their greater experience and some good fortune.

But the spanish media was very arrogant and over-confident. Especially but the rude comments about what tehy expected to be Zizou´s last game.

  • Cedric

    Rain,
28 comments and only one french flag. Are the french drinking, sleeping or leaving abroad?

I am French living in the US.
You won’t find any Frenchman online tonight. They are all partying their ass off in the streets right now!!

  • Haarf

Great game France, particularly Zidane that was incredible.

Thanks for foreign supporters (notably Spanish and Brazilians) that come here peacefully, it changes from some blogs.

    Now, let’s face Portugal !!!

  • http://members.chello.fr/misandre/index.htm ALLEZ LES BLEUS !

Bravo les bleus !! Fantastique ZIDANE, un joueur exceptionnel de talent…. Merci à tous ceux qui postent ici et qui soutiennent la France

  • jakk

VIVE LA FRANCE..Am with Zidane what a great player ….amazing just amazing!! Am speechless!!

  • patrick

“Allez Les Bleus! What a brillant game France played, a totally deserved win”. Let’s not go overboard with superlatives, Chriso. It was only 1-0 and the Brazilian defence was pathetic. The Brazilian team was pathetic, so if France had played truly “brilliant” the score should have reflected brilliance. Any objective football follower would admit that the Brazil of this morning played with no heart, no beauty, no tactics and just allowed France too much control of play, which Zidane welcomed. Zidane was left free to roam the field, and that is unforgivable, so Brazil deserved to lose, but France were not “brilliant”.

  • Xman

    Congratulations France!

A very well deserved victory, Brasil were simply outclassed this time around and had no answers to the French onslaught!

  • roger

What a difference between Zidane and Henry. Zidane is always so cool and never pretends false injuries, whereas Henry acts like Grosso of Italy, the slightest touch and he pretends he has been hit with a hammer. A player of Henry’s calibre should not resort to acting. I have never seen Zidane perform such silliness – great honest player. France will be a much lesser team when Zidane goes.

  • Virginie

Same here…French living in the US. I wish I could be in France partying all night… They must go crazy there! Here, I had to watch the match surrounded by brazilian supporters…but they were amazingly nice and respectful!
Zizou moves on, and in any case, Ronaldo has made history…so Brazil should be proud.
I wish we will play as well against Portugal!

  • sébastien

    Hi guys,

I’am French from france, and i’m very happy for this wonderful game, and i would thanks Brazil for their fairplay and for their fans too. Great game.

  • LiverpoolFC

Henry has learnt that honest players don’t win fouls in this game and they don’t win games in certain situations. He was furious he didn’t get a foul against Barcelona in the champions league final. So now he too is just playing the game until FIFA gets their act together and gets bans on players such as Grosso who clearly dived to win that penalty that took Italy thru all the way to the semi-finals in the 94th minute, it gives the opposition no chance to comeback and wins the game for ur country. Its cheating, its disgraceful but it does WIN games and that’s what Henry is playing on, at least Henry won the game thru some brilliant skill not a dive unlike the Italians besides France played the better football and DESERVED TO WIN.

  • lourenço

Congratulation France. France was a fair winer. This proves that there are no winners before the matches.
Congratulations Zidane. It’s players like Zidane tha makes football the best thing in the world.
In semi-final it will be very amazing to see Zidane and Figo. Probably the last competition for both, and probably the best players of the last years.
    Portugal Allez!!!!!

  • Dan Lourenço

Congratulations to France for a much deserved victory!!!!!! I expect the game against us (Portugal) will be a good one! You guys are real class! :)

    Take care

  • http://beingruthiesmom.blogspot.com Trish

Congratulations on a clean, well-played game. Good luck!

  • Greece – Portugal

Great game , by France , Brazil was invisible , Ronaldinho non-existent ( though i ‘m a huge barca fan ) . hope Portugal win the world cup . It will be a good compensation , because we grabbed the cup 2 years ago in Lisbon .

    Good Luck Portugal .

  • toch

back from the party!! what a day, skydiving from 4000meter altitude this afternoon and then this!!!!!
    we won

but the road to the victory won’t be easy, I think the brazilian played a very poor football, Portugal will be tired after their long game against England but they remain a excellent and a better team then brazil with deco coming back,
but I ‘m really afraid about all those yellow cards, I remember what happened with Deschamps in the semi in 1998, he played with the parking break not to miss the final

    will see

  • http://yahoo Les Rois

Tonight France showed that they are the best team in this world cup.A team without pretentious players like some others nations,a team of friends playing for the fun of the game, for their fans and for France!

    Congratulations to ALL 23!!!

  • Eddie

    el churro guapo,
    twice? nay thrice!
the last time brasil didnt get to the semi’s was 1986 and guess who knocked em out in the quarters? France!

  • el churro guapo

I now have respect for the French team, I used to think they sucked big blue balls and that they only used to win by luck. However, today I realize that they are indeed a powerhouse. Congratulations on a game well played. Beating Brazil twice??? UNBELIEVABLE!!!

  • Laurent

    yep all !
What a beautiful night in France ! I hope it will never end ! We outplayed Brazil as few teams were able to do it like that. Extra thanks to Mister ZZ ^_^ France is partying all nite long and it’s great !

Portugal will be another hot challenge and no way to underestimate it !

  • pao

Congrats to the french team, being italian it’s difficult for me to admit it :) . The French team outplayed Brazil it was quite an impressive show. Respect! Hope to see you in the final, well done France.

  • ryan

Very impressive. I agree with the comments of Les Rois. France played with a lot of class today. I will definitely root for them over Portugal.

  • SERB

Brilliant . I predicted you guys would win . You were way better than Brazil up to this point .

Forget about South American style . France has the most beautiful football in the world . Argentina has some tactical tricks and Brazil has offside trap and long-range shot and that’s it . France has the complete package . Zidane is genius ! Maybe best player ever .

Anyway France should get more recognition for its football which is the best in the world .

I predicted France-Germany final . Remains to be seen how far home advantage can go but it would be nice to see France win it all .

  • Jono

    Greetings from USA!

GREAT JOB!!! YOU DEFINETLY WERE THE BETTER TEAM!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE THE “UNBEATABLE” BRAZIL HAS BEEN DEFEATED!!! ONCE AGAIN GOOD JOB!!!

  • OmarKhayyam

Drunk myself much French wine last night, but ALLEZ LES BLEUS!

  • Bob

You gotta love how the French play with such passion and focus.
The boys from Brazil were flat out outplayed by Les Bleu.
French football is proving to be the best so far.
Maybe Brazil should have had tougher competition in the 1st round huh?
All youth soccer coaches should use the France v Brasil game as a teaching tool for their players.
    Allez Allez Allez France.

From one of the 6% in the US who are watching the best sports tournament in the world (even if the refereeing is suspect)

  • french fries

I’m from France, the time is 4:37 am, i’m tired but happy

it seemed to be an endless party after the game, everybody’s on the streets, screaming, crying, etc… so wonderful…

hope the semi finals will be great too

  • Gustavo – Brasil

Its good to watch Zinedine Zidane magic… too bad it was against Brazil…

    Congratulations France! Congratulation Zidane!

Now I am with Portugal, then France, then Germany…

  • tirusew

what a game! what a game! i am so happy today as Zinedin and Henry lifted team France to another level! by the way all french players needs to take the credit because it was a team effort!

  • Hannah

I am an Italian fan but I am also a soccer fan first and France played a great game today. Congrats and respect to France :)

France to me is the scariest team – every time you count them out they find a way to win. And like a championship team, they are getting better each match. Zinedine today played like he did in 1998 – pretty impressive for a player who was retired just a while ago ;) Great that he is back!

It would be great to see an Italy-France final :) It would be an exciting match and plus Italy has to avenge what happened in the Euro 2000 ;)

  • Julian

Geee! what a come back! Everybody was singing our swan song (including myself) during the group stages, and we’re back! Brazil is such a great team to play, no bullshit diving, faking or whatever. We’re up against Portugal now, that’ll be interesting, let the best team win! Allez les bleus!

  • John

I just wanted to mention that the posters on this thread have been among the most gracious of any I’ve read. Nice to know that some people can overcome their emotions and acknowledge a great game.

  • http://www.ifunbet.com Tascien

Do you really think that Swiss deserved a 0-0 draw with France?

Do you really think that Korea deserved a 1-1 draw with France?

  • Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane IS MY HERO!!!!!!!!! that man has mad skillz…and people said ronoldinho was the best in the world…check this guy out

  • Susan

    Allez les Bleus!

Congratulations, France on a game well played. The French style of soccer is so much more exciting than the English style. Great game. I hope France goes all the way! Bien fait, France!

  • Argentinian

Go win it for the good guys…. We are all behind you now.

The three teams with the biggest thrash talker-fans – Brazil, England and Argentina are out. That can only be good for football.

Long Live King Zidane, Long Live Ribery, Long Live Henry…

  • jmh

    German Fan
France… what happened? You played flat and listless in the first round, everyone is disappointed and now this.
What an incredible game! You played not just beautiful ball, you played smart.
Ribery was indefatigeable, Henry like a bloodhound looking for goals and of course the Great One. Can anything be said about ZZ that hasn’t been said already. One of the greatest players of all times, he proved again today. Should he retire after this, it will be a loss not just for France, but for everyone who loves this game.
    Congratulations France!!!
    This victory was richly deserved.

  • Sam

I think france played well enough to win, that is, much better than Brazil. Zidane and Ribery were great, but it seems as if it’s just a matter of time before their attack falters again. You’ve got another world-class striker on the bench…It’s insane to keep Trezeguet there and Malouda on the pitch, especially with Henry, who is used to total freedom at Arsenal, as your lone striker. What happened to attacking soccer? Too many teams are playing one striker, and I think they’re all going to eventually be punished by Germany, the only team left playing the good ol’ 4-4-2. France certainly has the team to beat them, but I don’t think they can do it with Henry alone up front.

  • bunburina

My God!!! you just have to ADORE Mr. Zinedine Zidane after watching this game. He deserves this and much more for his brilliant career. Is he single?? I think he’s married. If he wasn’t, then I’d marry him immediately!!! And what about Ribery? He did an amazing game. I kept hearing all this things about this super-overrated players like Rooney, Ronaldinho, Messi… none of them showed their stuff in this World Cup. And Ribery, without all that hype, very quitely, is kicking ass!! Allez les bleus!! What about a Germany vs France final?? That would be just perfect!!

  • Jono

Bunburina please let you be a girl! lol

  • Jono

I think it will be Germany vs France!

  • VIVE LA FRANCE

    Warning to all france supporters!!!!!!!

You will soon be playing a team with little honour and a lack of pride. Portugal will try alot of tricks. THey will dive, they will cry. Watch out cause ever since their antics helped them win their 2nd round match they have learned to depend on those tactics. They will try to induce ZIdan to receive a yellow and miss the final. When you oplay a team like this composure is teh key. They will go for RIbery. Good Luck. I hope you end their sherade.

  • CUBAN

Portugal HAS THE BRAZIL COACH OF THE LAST WORLD CUP WATCH OUT FOR THEM THEY WILL KILL THE FRENCH JUST LIKE IN A REAL WAR LOL DAMN FRENCHIE

  • VIVE LA FRANCE

  • Diego

what a pity I could not see the match!!!
Anyway, congratulations to France!! This is football, football is Zidane.

We´ll all miss Zidane when gone.
The years will pass long until we are lucky to see some player of his kind.

Good luck again!! But I also feel affection for Portugal.
    Let the best win.

  • Alex

Wow, haha man i just got back from some serious celebration!

    SUPERBE :)
I was awestruck by Zizou’s brilliance tonight. 6 years later Zidane showed strong arguments as to why some people might be bringing up his name as The Best Ever. What a great performance by Les Bleus!

I can see France-Portugal as being an epic match, 2 of our gens greatest playmakers fighting for their survival to play one more meaningful match before they retire.

The comments have been great here guys it’s really awesome to see!

    ALLEZ LES BLEUS

  • rihas

they said it again n again, “they” are the loser. “they” keep repeating that france just have luck in 98′, ronaldo was ill, and the played was bad wth brazil. so much excuse, because unbeliavablely the unbeatablely your brazil is no more. every nations hate france now, because they are not the ones who defeat brazil the defeanding champs for 2 times(1994,2002).
p/s : portugal to beat france?dreaming is the best way to do it.

  • pinaki de

as i said all along in this blog zizou is preserving is best for this world cup. my ideal, my idol – he is the master. zidane is a way of life – honest, skillful and lucid. the genius with capital G. period.

  • VIVE LA FRANCE

Portugal will prove once again they are a disgrace to the beautiful game.

  • laprimavera

Congratulations, French team! You’ve won my respect in this ugly tournament for your intelligent and clean football. Please please demolish the sleaze called Portugal team once for all.

  • alphac60

Well, France played like Brazil; Brazil played like the local club down the block; and “the team of oldies” won. At which point, it might be most interesting to note the Brazilian ages too. And then wonder: for how long will Brazil persist with their “big brands” in the first eleven, instead of bravely picking A TEAM tht will win.

  • Julien

As a French fan living in the U.S., I miss out on the excitement I used to experience watching Les Bleus in Europe. I will never forget ‘98 and hopefully this year will also be one to remember!
I love the Brazilian game and it is unfortunate for football that they did not bring their magic feet for this WC. i hope to see Brazil in 4 years playing the way they can play.
I want to recognize Willy Sagnol though for his efforts the entire tourney. He is one of the few French who always works hard. Merci Willy, Zizou, Titi, and the new kid on the block, Ribery. Beautiful play from a team that at times has trouble showing what they can do.

  • http://www.jk.com.sg Chuan

FRANCE SUCKS an old bunch of suckers who got lucky!

    Hail BRAZIL!! Hail BRAZIL!!

Brazil will win in South Africa and too. bad FRANCE might not even qualify with a group of old balls!!! HA HA!

I don’t care who wins the World Cup, I’m just glad it won’t be Brazil again. Nothing against Brazilians in general but Brazil the team has been the recipient of much help from the officiating in its last 2 world cup “wins.” Brazil didn’t play any better in World Cup 2002 but got a lot of help by the refs to win it all. That help didn’t really manifest itself this time around and Brazil lost. Brazil was an overrated, overhyped team, and I doubt this will change. Nonetheless, France played far from a flawless game, and just as the French could have had a few more goals so could Brazil have had some goals. On defence there were times when Frances looked vulnerable but Brazil’s overrated offence couldn’t score; in the end it was just 1 defensive lapse that allowed Henry to score the easy goal.

and all the goals we should score,
my heart is pumping for goal,
you left me longing for win.

    Football is a game,
and every afternoon we always train,
Hoping the golden boot will goto Zidane.

France played like they meant it and totally dominated the Selecao for the best part of the match. Brazil surely can’t claim to be the only world football powerhouse after this, where were Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka, Robinho, Adriano? If Zidane, Ribery and Henry keep playing like this, it’ll be Germany-France in the final with the French to win it.

Merci Beaucoup for a wonderful game… and Zidane = pure genius

  • http://israel.favos.nl Tal van Dijk

Great game France! Zidane was a king on the midfield and Henry’s goal was a superb finish! Now go and get the title!

  • patrick

The problem with many Brazilian supporters is that have reach a point where, because of Brazil’s excellent world cup record, they expect Brazil to win every match and every world cup. How boring the world cup would be if this were to happen. I would be the end of the world cup. The unpredictability of the many nations who compete in the finals, and the country that ultimately wins makes the World Cup exciting. There is no worse disease than that of avarice.

  • Bojan

I couldn`t believe my eyes. The Brazils were outplayed by “tricolores”…. They will win in 2010. I`m sure!

  • http://www.ahmedcyad.tk ASA

wel. its one of the best performance that u can see from a professional player and a world class player. zinedine zidane. i feel grateful to france team . what a wonderful touch .besides on his opponent he has got ronaldinho who tries for zidanes position. player of terh year. what a job zidane has done. he rules soccer. he is the king! there is no doubt abt it. cox he played against brazil. and brazil which will be stronger than germany i beleive.zidane deserves the player of teh year. he got assists . and he has not fallen from the soccer wolrd. he will be a remebrance to the soccer wolrd. he made an evolution with his great touches. and making techniques. which he made teh “ziziou 360″.he made infront of brazil. which proves to the whole wolrld that he is still there in the soccer not only ronaldinho or ronaldo.whther france doesnt get champions praise for him! gudluk to alll france fans . actually i’m against germany . and i hope france will get champion.

  • Alexandra

As a native French citizen, residing in the US, France’s win over Brazil marked the incredible excitement felt in France and around the world in 1998.
I hope France can continue to play as masterfully as they did against Brazil today. I also hope that it restores some of the pride of ethnic and racial diversity felt by many after the multicolored and multicultured “Les Bleus” led France to a World title in 1998.
Perhaps Monsiuer Le Pen may even rethink his views on immigration and racial diversity when a team filled with an eclectic group of talented footballers raises the spirits of an ailing nation once again.
    Allez les Bleus!!!!

  • we will win

hi every one …I’m a french man lost in Ireland and I just want to say WHAOOOOOO What a great night…We beat Brazil!!!!that’s so huge…
thank you to les bleus and vive la france!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (ps: pour les frenchies Ribery c’est le meilleur et Marseille la meilleur ekip de la ligue 1 lol)

  • heman

the greatness of the French and Zidan is that they gain from the quality of the opposition,Spain,Brazil…do not think i can root for anybody else!

    Good luck Zidane!WC 06!

  • Victor

    Zidane is un grand Monsieur!

  • Jodido

Great game from France! My favorites to win the tournament. Unbelievable game from Zizou, finally linking up with Henry. No team exudes class and professionalism like the French. Good luck against Portugal, then in the final!

I just hope France doesn’t lose on a Barthez mistake. He’s kind of a clown manning the nets and takes many unnecessary risks….

  • Lipin

Real exciting show, France, thanks a lot! While watching I had a feeling that France has all chances to win the cup, though the pressure is high, but the luck is definitely on your side.

  • borneng

Congratulation France! What a game, what team! World class players!

I am cheering for Germany and I think it would be a very good game to watch when France playing against Germany in the final, and may the best team win. I can only hope :-)

  • Fiffers

First thank you all for your nice comments, very great and class sportsmanship. It’s incredible to see our team in such great form, we are in heaven

  • Warlord88

Absolute delighted!! Ronaldinho.. go learn some football from Zidane. Wonderful game from France. Viva la France. Looking to see you in the finals against Italy!!!

    FORZA AZZURRI!!!!!

  • stef

Well, congratulations for 2 great games in a row.

But, since it seems that WE ARE ALL BLINDED, even with TV, wasn’t it the French goal OFF-SIDE???

If YOU DIDN’T notice it, watch it again, if YOU STILL CAN’T SEE IT, go to an optician…

  • sadik

zidane and viera have come of age and so is france !
watch out zizou wont retire empty hands wish him all the
    best
he surely took the game by the neck well done zizou nd CO
henry is fantastic but he has to give MORE ! for france 2 win de worldcup gud luck.

  • nono

    “German Fan
France… what happened? You played flat and listless in the first round, everyone is disappointed and now this.”

I have myself stopped trying to think rationally about my team. Being favourites they manage to lose against Senegal and Denmark, and now that we have lost any hope they manage to come back en force. It’s a bit confusing to be a French supporter.

“But, since it seems that WE ARE ALL BLINDED, even with TV, wasn’t it the French goal OFF-SIDE???”

    no

  • doct

I was one of those who thought France had no part in the finals after their uninspiring group stage performance. However, Zidane’s dominant performance in the last two games has been the best by a midfielder since Maradona in ‘86. The team now looks solid and a lock to win the cup.

  • screw the frogs

Tell me, is there one real
    actual frenchman on france’s
world cup team? I’m not a racist, I would love to see an
African team win the world cup
one of these years, I really would. That is to say an African team
representing an African country, not france.

  • Kiri

    ’screw the frogs’….

As an American it is shameful for you to say such a thing.

Would you say the same about our basketball dream team??! Would you say the same about any black player in any sport in the US?

    Get a clue man.

  • Fiffers

    *applause kiri*
    well said

  • Gabrielle

    Zizou est le meilleur!
    What a game!
Now we’ll have to play those Portuguese brutes. I was actually rooting for them at the begining of the game against Holland until I watched in disbelief how mean and unfairplay they were acting. Hopefully, this will turn to our advantage, Zidane is really good at drawing foul on him.
I agree that Trezeguet should be on the field with a 4-4-2 formation, it would give us more opportunities to score.
    ALLEZ LES BLEUS!

    D’une francaise aux States.

  • screw the frogs

The USA is a melting pot, that being said the blacks playing for the dream team were BORN
in the US, as were their parents
and their grand parents and great grand parents. Michael Jordan is a red blooded AMERICAN. How many
    players playing for france even
grew up there? There is no
comparison. The french national team is a foreign team
playing for france. I said what I said, not because I am anti black(if Ghana made the finals I would have been rooting for them) but because
I despise the french, which I have many valid reasons for doing. I think maybe that you are the one who is clueless.

  • Gabrielle

    To: Screw the Frogs

You’re an idiot and a biggot.

  • screw the frogs

Gabielle, what I said is the truth, I am not a bigot, I just dislike the french. I am entitled to dislike the french am I not?

  • Xman

    @ screw the frogs

    You stated
    “I despise the french”

Well that would explain your poor attitude. It is ashame you couldn’t just appreciate a team that played very well and a great game. How can you despise the french? do you personally know every french person or something? or you just like to make mass generalisations? how many french people do you know that you can make such a statement about millions of people?

I have issues with some of the things that the French government have done in the past but that has NOTHING to do with this great game they played.

Leave personal issues aside, it has no place in football!, enjoy the sport.

This was a great game and one of the cleanest so far in this world cup.

Again I see congrats – one person in Argentina!

  • Tascien

screw the frogs, where is your next KKK meeting going to be held?

Just because somebody is black it does not mean he cannot be french.

I live in Canada. I have canadian citizenship. so, do you think people who were born in Canada are better citizens than me? so, in the US you have two classes of citizens?

Tell me among french players, who was not born in France, or do you actually know france’s history?

Before you talk, you have to think…

  • squiggle

@ screw the frogs: look up the word ‘bigot’ in the nearest dictionary. I don’t suppose you’ll have one at your home but make your way down to the local library. That’s a place where books are kept. Ask a police officer or a friendly shop assistant for directions.

  • Gabrielle

You’re an idiot and ignorant biggot.

  • Gabrielle

I think that if the American team was recruiting its players of the streets as well as from colleges, (and not only college) I am positive they could get world class players. After all, Zidane was seen playing in the streets of Marseilles when he was 14. The US would give a chance to more hispanic descent players who do not automatically go to College, but play soccer every chance they get. Let’s face it, in this country, football (soccer) is considered a sport for girls by the majority. Today’s football’s results were displayed in page 7 of the sport section in our newspaper!!!

  • Kiri

    Screw the frogs:

That shows how ignorant you are. France was already a melting pot when our country did not even exist!

    To everyone else:

I have said it before…do not judge us Americans by reading comments from some hick who has never been outside of his country or even to the next door state. He probably has never even met a French person in his life but sometimes we are taught to hate whoever doesn’t always agree with us. Yes, it is ignorant and unfortunately very true.

    Get a life you retard

  • screw the frogs

Xman, I did appreciate the beautiful game that the african
    team representing france played.
    They thoroughly outplayed the
    Brazilian side. The Algerian
Zidane is surely one of the world’s greatest footballers.

  • SERB

@stef , are YOU blind ? If you have really analyzed the replay as you say then it is a miracle that you think the goal was offside . Do you even know what offside is ? And if I still haven’t convinced you then here is a clue : NOBODY ON BRAZIL SIDE COMPLAINED .

The goal was clearly onside .

  • Kiri

Zidane was born in France by the way.

Oh wait…then there are no Americans in the US!!! They all came from somewhere else!!! Oh no!

  • Thierry

All the wonderful comments above me are symbolic of what soccer is all about. An International Brotherhood. The Soccer Nation. I am French but I have admired Brazil for years, as much as any other teams that play with passion. Those players give us joy for two hours, regardless the color of the jersey or the skin. That what Brotherhood is all about.

  • Arsenal Forever!

    screwthefrogs:

You are the reason why so many people hate America. You are not representative of what the rest of us think. Most of us are educated, most of us know a lot more than you do, most of us won’t embarass ourselves with such display of racism AND ignorance!

You are just hurting yourself and the image of the US. We don’t need you. We don’t want you here.

  • joel rambaud

I HAd to work and it is against Co policy to have cell phone radio , one of my customer stayed almost the entire game , My boss came by and was very happy to get some feedback not to mention the very large sale , Hope France win, I wont be able to watch it again , here they like tub of lard and beer in a sport they call Football , they haveto take break every 3 metres . merci la France …….

  • screw the frogs

Arsenal, I’m not racist. If you
    can actually read and understand
the ENGLISH language what I said
was anti french, not racist at all. I’m entitled to my anti
    french sentiments, hopefully
I upset a few frenchies with my
    posts. france and the french
    can kiss my ass.

  • Brooks

    screwthefrogs:
first off, all of the French team players were born on French soil. guadeloupe, for example, is just as much ‘french soil’ as utah is american. clearly you do not understand history — french or american.
second, i completely agree with arsenal forever that people like you are the reason why the world hates america. blind, generalizing statements like your own — ‘i despise the french and have good reasons’ – oh really? what are the good reasons for despising millions of people you have never met, do not know or would ever care to know? that kind of mass “despising” equals bigotry — whether it’s about race or about nationality, it’s the SAME THING.
finally, where do you draw the line when it comes to nationality? thank god for slavery because otherwise where would american basketball be, right? nationality is such a slippery thing, at the end of the day the fact that the french team plays FOR france, declares itself french (read thuram’s comments in response to le pen), and sings the national anthem more than any other team in soccer is worth noting.
finally — i can’t help getting political. the fact that your brand of hatred is accepted in the u.s. is disgusting. it’s one step from racism. it’s the same way that homophobia is tacitly accepted. at the end of the day, that kind of hatred boils down to the same fucking thing. enjoy your xenophobia while the u.s. creeps steadily toward fascism, as for the rest of us we’ll be hoping for a change and hoping for france 06.

  • Brooks

p.s. i am an american. maybe you upset some ‘frenchies’ but you upset me a lot more i bet. thanks for giving america a bad name.

and, sure, i guess you’re entitled to your anti-french sentiments. it’s a little complicated when you consider that america would never have won its war of independence if not for the french, but then that might be too much for you, it’s history after all.

  • Tudorgodwin

it was great shock to brazil, however frenchman are very happy indded.

  • Morgane

Screw the frogs, Zinedine Zidane come from where I live and his familly live in france too. France is a earth of welcomming and we are proud to have black people or arabs people in our team because they represent France.

  • Kiri

Trust me…you are not upsetting any French people…they are just laughing at you and saying: “one more dumb ugly American”.

If you notice, not a single message from France….but plenty of messages from Americans disgusted by your display of ignorance.

  • screw the frogs

    Earth of welcomming????
Yeah, I really saw that last
october with the rioting, burning and looting. Less than
    50 years from becoming an
    islamic republic. The nazis
over ran france in one week,
it will take the muslims a bit
    longer.

  • Tudorgodwin

Both teams played well, but fate is against for brazil

  • Haarf

Don’t feed the troll. Even if that’s true he doesn’t like French, who cares of the opinion of this poor racist guy.

  • http://--- fffalleiros

Congratulations! France detroyed brazil… zizou played as a god in the field. mey english is awful but at least i know that brazilian´s coach “Parreira” is the dumbest person i´ve ever seen. I wish Brazil had “Scolari” as coach this world cup too, but Portugal was far more intelligent.

    FRANCE ROX!

But now, i´m Portugal all my heart ´cause of “Scolari” – Felipão!

    Sorry guys!

  • http://hearmesay.blogdrive.com khaleeda

My loyalty to France is worthy..It was like the Brazilians got some sort of phobia for France..huhuhu..they’re jinxed!!..=p..it seems like they can’t get over their defeat to France in World Cup 1998..Think I’m most happy for Zizou..he’s brilliant!..no words can descride his impressive style of playing..he’s juz great!!~Vive La France..

  • screw the frogs

Well all I can say is go
portugal, if they actually decide to show up and play(unlike Brazil) they should have no trouble with the african
    frog team.

  • Lurch

Lots of France players have 1 yellow. All the standouts.

I am sure something lame is going to happen against Portugal and we won’t see Ribery Zidane Thuram or Sagnol in the final. Hope I am wrong. Would love to see France at full force.

Anyone else think the yellow card rule is too harsh?

  • Virginie

    To Steph…
Maybe you should review what an offside is…it’ll obviously help…
To Kiri, Gabrielle, Arsenal for ever, squiggle and Brooks…you should definitely ignore the idiot. We have a nice French expression you may want to consider applying(from Audiard):
“Je ne parle pas aux cons, ca les instruits”, which means something like “I don’t talk to idiots, it educates them”;-)
And don’t worry guys, we know he’s not representative of all Americans!

  • Eric

    @screw the frogs,
That is just it, you believe that the French give a damn about you…The only people that French are interested in are educated, forward thinking and classy people which pretty much excludes all red necks (including you and Bush).
Technically to be an All American team the players would have to be Native Americans, which I don’t recall seeing a lot of in any of the NFL, NBA MLS or Baseball teams.
All the players in the French team were either born in France or in French territories (or ex colonies i.e. Senegal).
Please before posting derogatory comments, check your facts and get informed. Also if you could try to submit posts that alleviate the conversation, I doubt you can but it would be a good exercise for you to try, then maybe the French will give a damn about your stupid a**.

  • deSaladin

Congrats France! -Great game – I am actually an England fan but as you know theyhave been let down by huge tactical errors and bad personnel choices. This Game however I will watch many times – Brazil masters with the ball (at least on Video demonstrations) but lacking the order and discipline of this French team today – the Premiership players came through and Zidane too. Ronaldo McDonald was too fat like Beckham too out of shape to make the difference – He resorted to diving at the end like Beckham dived into the stands. I like Ronaldo though – but the coach played him to placate fans – not because he was the best choice against knowledgable European teams. But all in all – Great Game – the young ones can see how to stroke the ball effortlessly and how to beat a technically superior team by using great teamwork, passing, passing, passing…and patiently waiting for the kill. This is what makes Soccer/football the greatest team game. Let’s at least thank the British for that – but not for the likes of Beckham and Rooney.

  • deSaladin

Say, How about Germany vs France in the Final!?

If both teams play their best soccer – it should be a fantastic game.

The Italian and Portuguese style game has been marred by diving, antics and countless attempts to fake out the referee. This does no credit to their unique brand of entertaining football – oh for the days of Eusebio again. The 3rd/4th place game could be relatively boring and dirty unless something changes quickly.

At least Germany and France have kept this to a minimum – better if every player signed a pledge before the game that he would get off the ground in 2 seconds unless truly hurt!

In the school ground as kids we would kick out of our team anyone who couldn’t stand up to tackles and who pretended to be hurt. Seems we were more like men then than our super tabloid heroes of today.

Winning at any cost is a sad state of affairs – Can you imagine Rugby or Cricket players doing this?

  • SERB

    Re:Portugal …

Is it just me or is Miguel a big liability ? Last game , everytime he touched the ball the Portuguese play ended . That’s how it looked to me but I didn’t really follow the game too closely as it was boring .

I think the fact that Portugal could not score against England puts Portugal out of contention .

  • eu

congratulations, france, for the great match. in the end, you played much better than brazil and deserved the victory.

  • pawan

french team played better football. for me they are the best team so far. germany has been my all time favorite. but this time i am going to support france.

  • dédé

    Hi everybody,

I would like to thank you for all these messages of sympathy and congratulation for our team. It heats the heart…
In France we all were near hysteria and it was wonderfull, but badly there were some excess and overflows too.

Zidane is a genius, but I’m anxious, because he already has a yellow card, and we know that sometimes he has some difficulties to controll himself. I hope he will be correct against Portugal team and will resist to the pression. If not he will not play the final, if we qualify against Portugal and it would be very very bad.

But now, the players has to keep their feet on the ground.

Allez les Bleus and thank you all!!! (and sorry for my english..lol)

  • Virginie

    To Lurch:
I don’t think the yellow card rule is a tough one, but it will be much better with some video (yep, the eternal video debate). That would avoid to have some guys who did not deserve their yellow card to be out of a game…If there was no such rule, that’ll be free pass for aggression, and I am not sure it’ll look pretty.

  • Brazilian Boy ^ ^”"”"”

Brazil Team = DISMAL, DRAFF,GARBAGE,TRASH!!!!!!! in the match against the France on the World cup Germany 2006

    Coach Parreira = DONKEY,MULE!

BRAZIL IS BACKING TO THE HOME !!
    AHHUAHHAUH!

    Hey Screw The Frog,

I am a frog lost among dimwits like you. Fortunately, some Americans are not as uninformed as you are. I would suggest you start searching for information outside of Fox News. The combination of your arrogance and your ignorance is a dangerous cocktail.
This should be a posting board about soccer… In regards to your comment about “The french national team is a foreign team

Here is some data for you.

Eric, what do you consider a “redneck”… be careful of stereotyping.. I am from Texas, didn’t vote for Bush, have a degree from a major college, and can appreciate soccer and would actually like to see the French win. Yet those of us from the southern US are seen as rednecks… the same type of stereotyping that the idiot Screw the Frogs is guilty of.

  • Eric

    @Bell,

And I apologize, never meant to throw everybody in the same pot. What I would consider a redneck has nothing to with education or location, but with how ones composes himself. Making misinformed, judgemental and wrong assessment especially when thinking you are ‘holding the truth’ pretty much makes you a redneck in my eyes. I am in a position where being born in L.A., growing up in France and now living in the US, I am able to relate to both countries and I must say that unfortunately ‘redneck’ is not a American copyright :-)

  • Native Son

And now back to the game….

France played beautifully against Brazil and Zidane was simply magic to watch. The French team have certainly lost their status as underdogs now and are already being hyped, or tipped, as favourites to win the next game and have a fighting chance against Italy or Germany.

Me, it worries me, because I have a sneaking suspicion that the French team only plays well when their backs are against the wall, so to speak. Brazil was an incredibly poor version of itself throughout the tournament and I couldn’t honestly say that beating Brazil was better than beating Spain.

I just read an interview with Domenech on http://www.lequipe.fr and am relieved that no one in the French side seems to think that the Portuguese will be a pushover.

  • alastair

hi evrybody im so happy we made it aigainst brazil with such style i missed half the match because of a car accident but for what i saw it was a great match
A big thanx to all the nice comments and a big “va te faire foutre connard ” to the french skrewer who hates me even if we have never met : stop the masturbation and start thinking
a black colored person can be french

  • Benjamin

Allez Les Bleus! France totally deserved their victory; I like most people and most of the French thought at the start of this tournament that France was no longer a championship team, we’ve all been shown wrong. I though am in a terrible predicament…i love world cup soccer and rooting for the teams/nations i like…now I lived in Paris for 6 months and I speak French…but then again, the French are, well they’re French…I really like the German team (im confident they will beat italy and move to the finals) and a world cup win would be great for that country, but can I really cheer for a nation that started two world wars?…whats an American to do!?

    greetings from Paris trezieme district!

i’m originally from the Philippines, a football-lover, who has a national team that can only beat one-legged teams. but i am a strong supporter of France right now. i think after the Brazil victory, only Germany stands in their way. ’nuff said.

as for the stupid and ignorant comments of screw the frogs, i don’t think it it reflects as AMERICAN. all of the countries in this planet has their share of dimwits.

my predictions: France 2, Portugal 0. Italy 0, Germany 0 (Germany wins on penalties 4-2)

    Allez les Blues!
Congratulations to les Blues for a game (vs Brazil) well-played!
Les Blues could win the WC if they take a match one step at a time. Do not get over-confident. Just play like you did against Brasil; and, watch the “yellow” and “red” cards!! Bon chance, mes amies!!

  • Frank

For reasons that has nothing to do with football, in the US we have learned to dislike France…and never thought I would say this but…I was truly impressed with France and especially with Zidane…I true master of this sport and an outstanding sportsman. Now I am a believer that France will reach the final and even win it….but word of caution, do not count Portugal out…their coach is fox who knows how to neutralize even the best teams around…and given the opportunity, they have excellent players that can score.

  • Carlos-br

I’m with screw the frogs in this one, he’s not being racist, he just made a simple question: why a country with maybe 5% of blacks have 17 out of 23 players from the minorities?

Is it being racist? I can’t imagine the Ghana team with 17 white players, it’s not really Ghana.

And I can’t be racist, as I’m black and proud of it.

Some of you guys really need to get a life.

  • sbk

Zidance was superb. Ronaldinho played very well, but with little support.

France team was not brilliant, rather Brazil’s defence was pathetic and the coach Pereirra made some bad decisions – like leaving out attacking players like Robinho.

France will find Portugal a tough nut to crack.

  • Dirk

France played excellent football. Zidane was outstanding (oh, my, a German having to admit France was excellent)

  • Dirk

Germany-France; now there’s a game worthy of its title. Congratulations to France for a tremendous win over Brazil

  • Dirk

Carlos, you’re the quintessential racist; a black man that thinks every historically white country can’t integrate! Oh, you’re perfect for feeling that when they do, they’re suddenly racists in reverse. Give me a break

  • indio

FRANCE played the most tactical and beautiful football so far in this world cup. when i say tactical and beautiful, it’s not the 6-0 by argentina nor the 4-0 ambush by spain against ukraine, nor any of those 5 brazilian games.

and to Carlos-br, i’m sorry, but you’re racist, you just don’t know it. the worst is, you’re a BLACK racist, and that makes you more stupid.

  • Jay

For those who think “strange” that french team has a lot of black people, just think about other sports. I explain : Why there is a majority of black players in the NBA ? Not because USA are a black country but simply because sport is the best way for many poor kids to socially grow-up. In france, we have a good recruiting system who detects the future talents, in the streets, in the clubs, etc… Wen you’re living in a “banlieue”, you have less chance to socially grow-up, that’s a fact. So football is a good way to go through. Of course some players cames from “middle classes”. Why brasilian footbtall give us a lot a genius ? not because brasilians are naturally better than the others in football but simply because recruiting in the poor districts is the best way to find champions.
    Sorry for my english ;)

  • Catherine

I supported France all the way..and i was vert happy to see that they won..in this game they were far more better than Brazil

  • krakatoa

    Carlos,
So you think that being black actually exclude you from being a racist??

One is racist not becoz of his skin color, but becoz of the way of his thinking about other people that do not share the same skin color as his.

    Get a life, dude!

  • Toast

France – Congratulations on the superb match.

Come wednesday, may the best team win – at go on to win the Cup.

    Go Portugal :)

  • goldao

Are there any portugues or french fans out there who own a ticket for Germany-Italy in Dortmund and want to swap for my Portugal-France ticket in Munich?

  • http://worldcupblog.org Victor

    Hi

I am a argentine fan. It is sad they lost due to poor tactics from their coach during the penalty shootout and also for not attacking enough.

Coming to france-brazil match, the french deserve to win. Brazil just scraped thru in all its previous matches except against japan when its reserve players played.

Brazil has lots of talented players but a dumb coach in this world cup. The coach has to be entirely blamed for their debacle.

Also they have not learnt anything from this world cup because none of the big stars from this team will be their next time and the youngsters who were not bench this time will play next time. Atleast inspite of losing, the yougsters should have been given a chance to play instead of the old and lazy stars.

Brasil team selection is the cause of their defeat and the whole world knows it except their team management and coach.

Hope they do have better coaches and not just better players.

  • Jay

May be another reason for Brasil defeat : Never play playstation instead of training. At this level of competition it is an incredible mistake.

  • LiverpoolFC

LOL yea confidence can be a wonderful thing as long as u don’t go train on the playstation instead of real training :)

  • ALICE

It wasn said that the resut justified the means.
However, after watching this match, i want to say the means justified the means as well as the resut.

  • Ellie

*Hey everyone!.. Even though im aussie i jus wanna say GO FRANCE!! yay.. congrats on winning over Brazil, you guys deserve it. FRANCEfranceFRANCEfranceFRANCEfrance
    bYe ppl xox
P.S FRENCH FRIES ARE THE BEST!

  • Kiri

    Carlos,

You are a shame to your country and you are too ignorant to realize it.

  • shuai

    Carlos, screw the frogs :

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Hopefully french people know that all american people are not a bunch of idiots like you.
It’d be sad for this country.

Go to school and shut the f**k up!!

  • clement

    Brooks, kiri,

Thanks to give some educations to the guy (screw yourself)who has embarassed himself with such comments. The only comments of this thread who’s very hatred toward the french. But what could you exept from somebody from somebody who seems to be more about “french bashing” than a real football fan.

By the way Makelele and Viera are the only 2 guys borned outside france (Senegal and Congo), you see. What a clown! I repeat you bother nobody here but yourself

  • clement

sorry Harvey i did not notice that you posted the list of the french players and their nationality but I was so sorry for kiri and the other U.S football fan that i have could not wait to answer to him.

  • clement

According to the press and and biggest football experts, Zidane is already among the best footballer ever. If France win this tournament he will be considered at the same level than Maradona and Pele. What about that sc*§ the french?

  • clement

hey Ellie, it seems like one poster here prefer the liberty fries rather than the french fries. LOL

  • souvent

Viva La France! What a game. It was nice to see Z back in form. Yes, he’s not as fast as he used to be…but he can do more in 4 years, and 2 touches than some of the younger players do with 5 touches and 20 yards. It was really a clinic: ball control, vision, efficiency of motion. And then all the excitement from Brazil at the end…had my heart pumping.

I also must comment that it was nice to see a ‘clean’ game for once. Everyone on the field had respect for one another. They played hard, and gave hard fouls, but checked to see that the other player was alright; helped the player up, and both players laughed and played on. There have been too many ‘malicious’ matches as of late.
Yes, Brazil was out played, but it was a good game, and it is the way soccer should be played, especially at this level.

I do wish Henry woudln’t dive so much…he seems to be doing more of it. Oh well…can’t wait for the Portugal game.

  • souvent

    (err…type more in 4 yards, not years :) )

  • Gabrielle

I agree with you “Souvent” it was nice to see a ‘clean’ game. I don’t think it is going to be the same thing with Portugal. It is going to be hard to keep all of our players in the field with no more yellow cards.
Portugal wants it BAAAAD, and they are a good defensive team. Domenech is right to halt all the Cocoricos and isolate the team from the ease that come after a success.
    Qui vivra, verra.

  • Jay

Je dirais même plus : “Qui vivra Vierra”….désolé…

  • Response to primitive bashing

    To “screw the frogs”…

France falls into the Nation-state paradigm. Nation-state model usually defends and represents certain values, ideals, and culture(s) to gather people under the same flag as opposed to a tribe or a fascist entity whithin which ethnic characteristics prevail over intellectual or spiritual factors. France (like England or even America to some extent) because of its once vast Empire has integrated many different cultures and ethnic groups (with more or less success, well, nothing worth happens overnight). On top of that French policy has been traditionaly rather open and lenient on welcoming foreigners. Bearing this definition in mind you may stop posting your moronic comments and think twice about your poor statement as regard to the French team not being genuine. I also suggest you to review your history books

In 1998 the World Champions were multi color, multi ethnic, like in 2000 when the French team won the Euro cup and 2001 and 2003 when it won the Confederation cup. If at some point in time Black or Arabic or Portuguese or Persians or Indians or Asians or Turkish or whatever skin/ethnic group prevail in the French team then it just means that these “colored” people (who are French I repeat) are deemed best possible players at their position thus being legitimately entitle based on their skills and prformance to represent THEIR country in an international tournament.

If you look at the European teams you’ll find out that most of them have some players of different origins. Europe is a melting pot just like Canada and the USA… In fact just like most Western countries nowadays. I am myself of Italian origins living in France.

And yes, we know that educated Americans do not share your biased views.

Finaly, if you really like bashing French, then stick to Fox News Media, at least you’ll get a complacent audience that will positively nodd at your misinformation.

  • Jipoune

I was going through all the posts, one by one, and to be honest I was feeling that, yes effectively, the tone was excellent, very fair and from all participants.

Then the “screw the frogs” came in the dance and everything changed.

Without doing much philosophy, I would like to say the following:

    - Some people in France think the same as this person, themselves. Actually, we have in our country around 20% of the people ready to vote for the far right wing party anytime… some of them are now probably also celebrating the recent successes in the street.

    - This person does not like french people, so what? We cannot like or be liked by the entire world. Just like in a family, you cannot love everybody but when times are getting tough, you’re still part of the family and you can count on its members.

    - The true reasons for this hate is unknown to us, but we can imagine what it is linked to. It is a pity since the battle – both ways, since we are also upset by the USA from time to time – should be somewhere else. We live in the same world, with the same roots (black and white people), share the same conception of what a democracy is or should be. There are a lot of things we shall be fighting together against in the world, instead of pointing our fingers at each other.

    - To come back to the real and only subject of this thread, yes I am happy to be French today, thanks to a very good football game from this team. And also very happy about the comments from all over the world which is a proof of openness from all of you. I was part the large majority of French people mocking this team before these last two games – not because of the colour of the skin of the players – and I am not really proud about that now.

Finally, what made me particularly proud, I must confess, was the behaviour of both teams at the end of the game, very fair and calm. This shall be like that after every match, a little bit like with most rugby games.

May the best of the 4 remaining teams win the world cup.

  • toch

thank you for your post jipoune
what I’ve read here about my team and after screw the frog shiet , made me feel good.

Can you come back to the post after france-spain game, when I was explaining how you could easily meet those racist and a** ***** in a stadium, what a pity…

Exactly like the cheaters in the Tour de France who have been banned this week end, these people have nothing to do in sports!!!!

If your in France (french or foreigners) and interested, with visiting some of the most beautiful cities of France or Italy and watching a good game, contact me, we were in milano roma fiorenze (fiorentina home) brescia Bergamo Paris Marseille Lyon Auxerre this year, week end trip bunch of friends, lots of laugh good time beers, well be happy to take you with us, maybe barcelona next year=
    csouday@wanadoo.fr

    good luck always

  • Ninosk

Now I see all the stupid Nike commercials with the “Joga Bonito” tagline and I laugh. They should change it to “Jouez Beau”.

OH PLEEEEEEASE!!! Never happen! Brasil is and always will be the first name in football! I’m not knocking the French team, they clearly outplayed Brasil, but they have a looooooooooooooooooooong way to go before they are seen as the rest of the world sees Brasil, the soccer champions of the world. You have to respect the Brasileros, they are good.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Antoine

okguys how about we forget about what happened up there and stay on subject what do you guys predict the score will be against Portugal vs France (ps sorry for bringing the racist subject up again in trying to end it) i hope it will be a great game and may the best team win,i send my best wishes to both teams ALLEZ LES BLEUS!!!

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Antoine

Predictions, Predictions racism about our team is in the past and if Zidane saw how we were dealing with this situation he would be very upset with us do what he would do fight and ignore and we already did the fighting part now lets ignore now throw me some predictions on this up comming match Portugal vs France

  • Amadeus

Hey Screw the frog, I would say, s-c-r-e-w-t-h-e-f-r-o-g.
    Screw a frog like yourself.

  • Amadeus

Sorry to revive the screw the frog comment, guys n girls. May France win this Gold Cup, inshallah!

  • Alessandro – Latin cousin to Latin cousins

I predict a tough game with unfortunate yellow cards which may dampen France or Portugal chances for the final…

I love both teams, a bunch of great players, should be a great fiesta! The Figo – Zidane and Henry – Ronaldo showdowns are worth watching!

    May the best win!

  • toch

ninosk is right before 1982 we were nothing, but in 24 years we’ve become a good football country but yet nothing to compare to brazil or germany itlia spain or england, because our championship isn’t as good, only 2 european titles…

    my prediction:
    it’s gone be very hard
    maybe 2-0
I hope no extra time and no yellow cards to have everyone in good shape against tired italians on sunday.

  • Hannah

my prediction for tomorrow is that it will be a high scoring game. Something tells me it will be 5-2 or 3-0 but I won’t say for who ;)

either way both Portugal and France need it to be a clean game without injury and/or yellow/red cards because they will need to be 100% for the final against Italy.

I am an Italian fan and I don’t remember a time when they have played so strong (not even in 1994 when they made the final). As for 1982 I don’t remember that final too well.

France is playing stronger too but I think that Portugal will try to get to their best players the way that they did against England. And Portugal’s game against Netherlands was a record breaking game where cards were concerned. So it must be their strategy to play a bit “dirty” so France needs to be careful.

It was great for France to beat Brazil but I think that Portugal’s game is better defensively so in a way this will be a tougher game for France.

    Either way good luck :)

  • Germaine

Be cafrefull France! The Portuguese are a dirty Lot, slimmy as rotten cod!

  • Smelly Cat

I just don’t understand how the people atack the portuguese players and after defend players (that I like too) like Henry (diving) and Zidane (red cards and agressions in WC games).

It’s sad to listen less than 24 hours from the game a player like Gallas in the press conference saying all that sh!t about portuguese players knowing what the team mates do when teir are in the pitch.

We are a small country and the image that we have of this WC is that England and France are affraid of us and just make great pression upon the referees before the games.

I would just love to see C. Ronaldo or Deco or Figo scoring a goal and then all the team run to a side of the pitch and dive (all the players). You know, I loved to see when Fowler after a goal that he scored put in his knees and snifed the white line of the pitch cause were saying that he consume cocaine.

    Portugal 15 – 0 France

  • Seb

    Smelly cat

Because Portuguese players never dive or put pressure upon the referee… Did you watch England Portugal ?

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org/group-g/the-best-team-won.html#comment-1435 Pedro P

Did YOU watch FRA vs SPA…?

Well, read my post in the other thread about Henry and his fake elbow injury.

    To Screw the Frogs:

Futbol or soccer as it’s known here in the U.S. is a game open to anyone and everybody.

As long as you can kick a ball, any ball, you can play.

Dude, come on! The world hates us cause of the policies of George W. While you are free to express your opinions, you are not helping the good old U.S of A here!

Ligten up man. France is now a multi-ethnic country just like us. They have black players just like we do in our NFL, NBA and MLB leagues.
