Time for a rest

Another of the winning class of 98 has announced he’s taking the pipe and slippers route. This time midfielder Youri Djorkaeff has said he’ll finish his career for good when the season ends in the US for his current team Red Bull New York.

He’s 38 years old now and has certainly had his share of clubs and country’s playing for PSG, Monaco and a few others in France, Inter Milan in Italy, Kaiserslautern in Germany, Bolton and Blackburn in the Premiership and now he’s ending in New York.

He played in every game for France’s World Cup winning side and scored one goal at France 98. He was a skillful and hardworking player and even late in his career had the touch of class to stand out in a game.

With Zidane and Lizarazu recently saying they’re retiring he’ll have plenty of company to talk over old times with.

Djorkaeff might have had an uneven int’l career at times (and which Bleu hasn’t?), but he was instrumental in 98. Witness his skill and tenacity in getting the ballon to Thuram in the aforementioned match v Croatia for a goal. In fact, just this morning I thought he might just still be a fit for the squad going to Germany. Salut, Youri. You’re class.
