What’s he got left?

April 2nd, 2006 | By: Chriso | 3 Comments »

If I was Raymond Domenech I’d be starting to get worried about the form of my captain, Zinedine Zidane.

The last three times I’ve seen him play for Real Madrid, the two Champions League quarter-final games with Arsenal and last night’s La Liga game in Barcelona, I’ve hardly noticed that Zidane is on the pitch.

It seems like his legs have gone, along with the incisive passing. I can’t remember the last time I saw him control a game where he would drop the shoulder, glide past a couple of players and play a killer ball.

I know the French players talk about him as their football hero but I’d be a little worried that there’s not a whole lot left in the Zidane locker and the coach better have a plan B. France don’t want to start this World Cup like the last one or a lot of doubt will begin to creep in.

Zidane may not be in top form, butsome veterans can deliver more than some young guns. Of course the ‘plan B’ is necessary, but in the bench.

I agree that in Real Madrid he really seems to be invisible, but maybe the club profile isn’t helping him to develop his best football.

We must see Zizou in the French team, in a friendly or something.

I fully agree with you. He is actually not impressing at all at the moment as long he’s not saving all his energy for a great world cup which is definitely his last international tournament. However, yes the France national team is very Zidane-based and we need to change this mentality. This is what has happened to us in the last World Cup. Zidane got injured in a friendly match against South Korea just a couple of the days before the world cup and we had no alternative. If Zidane is out of form or worst still injured, I would suggest giving Henry a free role behind strikers Trezeguet and Saha. In my opinion that would work great! One last thing: I wonder why such a great player as Rothen is not playing with France’s national team. I only saw him playing against Greece in the last European Championships and that was it. Indeed in that game he entered as a substitute in the last 10 mins and those were the only minutes when France managed to penetrate the penalty area. I would appreciate your feedback on my opinion.

I like the idea of bringing in Saha to play along with Henry and Trezeguet.
Saha’s playing great for Man.United at the moment and keeping van Nistelrooy on the bench.

If France can play at a higher tempo I think they’ll be dangerous especially if Henry gets a free role to go where he wants.
