Will he get the call?

June 20th, 2006 | By: Chriso | 24 Comments »

Will Raymond Domenech go back to the tried and trusted and put David Trezeguet back in to lead the attack against Togo.

Trezeguet didn´t make it off the bench against the Swiss and only came on in the 90th minute in the Korea game so has definitely fallen out of favour with Domenech but his record of 32 goals in 63 games for France is fantastic.
France have scored once in their two games so far, Togo have conceded four their two matches so it looks like an ideal stage for a player such as Trezeguet to make a dramatic return.

With Zidane out through suspension the coach has all the excuse he needs to change formation and personnel.
France have the players to get goals against Togo, Domenech has to put them together so that they do.

I totally agree with the trezeguet thing. Domenech is making a terrible mistake by not puting him in. But I recently read that the last tiebreaker, if it should come down to it is drawind of lots, which to my understanding means drawing straws but that seems a little extreme for something that important. Can someone clarify?

Tie Breaking Mechanism in the World Cup:

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup.

Found this on one of the sites out there.

france is going to have a hard time, they really need to get it together, if korea and swiss would actually have a 2:2 draw or something, it would be almost impossible even with a win….

No, if there is a 2:2 draw between Korea and Swiss, it’s not absolutely impossible for France. If France wins 2:0 or 3:1 it’s enough. It’s not impossible but it’s going to be hard.

I really hope that France will win the match against Togo. It would be a pity if we won’t make it to the next round!!
Actually, posted on http://www.fedexshow.com , there are some really funny videos (3D animated films involving witty cavemen) with commentaries on the match! Enjoy.

The french coach is an idiot. When 3 of your players are standing on the pitch cursing each other, during a world cup game, from a coaching standpoint, your team is in termoil! Has this guy ever seen thiery Henri play in Arsenal? He runs the play and makes runs from mid field, orchestrating give and go passes. Domenech has shoved Henri into an isolated position on the left side of the box where he is totally ineffective; being useless and hanging around in the box waiting for service is Trezerguets game. Henri and Ribery are the only players on the french side capable of producing brilliant service to a goal sucking Trezerguet. I dont know about Demenech but Saha looked inspired when he came in against Switerland. Now that Zidane cant play due to suspenstion maybe Henri can play his proper position.
Anyway, I say dont take the chance, fire Demenech now! and make Zidane player/coach. Because I think the French will qualify tomorrow despit there coach, if Demenech continues into the next round France will not advance beyond it.

France, pls let the match be a draw as the result! I do support you ppl better than the disgusting Togolese, but still, I hope that Korea and Switzerland can both advance to the next round! You French ppl played good, but your “so-few-goals” performance have made me think twice. You only have one match left to prove me wrong. Anyway, if you are to win against Togolese, may God bless you with a great victory! I myself, as a fan of Korea, do hope France and Korea can advance to the Round of 16! Good luck!

French translation:
Bonne chance !

As a matter of fact Electra, so far over the past two World Cups France has scored a grand total of one (1) goal.

I think even if France win 100-0 and Switzerland ties 2-2 with South Korea, Swiss and S Korea go through.
http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/releases/en/fwc_regulations_2006_090604_en.pdf

Swiss France 0-0
France S Korea 1-1
Assuming S Korea Swiss 2-2

The tie breaker would be:
(i) greater number of points among the 3 in the games involving those 3 – same points.
(ii) goal difference in the games involving these 3 – same GD
(iii) goals scored in the game involving these 3 … S Korea has 3 Swiss has 2 and France has 1
So Swiss and S Korea through.

France can come first in the group if S Korea Swiss ties 0-0 and France beats Togo by a GD of 2.
France will come second, eliminating Swiss if S Korea Swiss ties 1-1 and France beats Togo by a GD of 3

reality check!! francia won the 1998 cup only, only because ronaldo got the jeeters…..things are getting back to normal with france being like many european teams who have good players here and there but remain largely obscure in the world cup…..

The topic was Trezeguet and team selection.

First of all, 4-4-2 is the best formation.

However, Trezeguet is going to have to learn the offside rule if he wants a first team position.

Titi Henry is definitely getting a spot.

The key is to replace have-beens like Makelele in midfield. The likes of Dhorasoo and Ribéry are ripe and ready for the challenge that awaits them. Spain have a very young team. You can’t be sending Makelele and co against them.

Viera proved himself and is good at winning possession, he stays.

Ribéry was great despite missing two massive chances. He stays.

The back four were good, Silvestre should permanently replace the clumsy Abidal.

Fabien was dodgy in goal, Grégory would have been the best choice.

Zizou can either be used as a starter or a super-sub, although he’d probably take offence at the latter.

Maybe Saha or Govou should be tested up with Titi, preferably Saha, or maybe Wiltord, even though he plays wide.
