Barthez Switching to Beach Soccer?

barthez-after.jpgFirst, a sad bit of French soccer news: France was ousted from the Beach Soccer World Cup by Brazil on Saturday. What’s up with that?

In more interesting news, though, Fabien Barthez has been asked to take up the gloves and join the beach party. (Hmm. First Vikash Dhorasoo news, now Barthez? What is this, the month for news on players who have previously broken my heart?)

But, unlike the Dhorasoo events, this seems to be good news.

Les Bleus’ beach soccer team have approached the world champion and offered him the chance to play again, but this time on sand. Co-managers Henri Emile and Eric Cantona would love to have Barthez in their team and the Frenchmen are hopeful the famous goalkeeper will accept their invitation to join them.

Yes, that Eric Cantona. The man who singlehandedly redefined the phrase “Joga Bonito.”

I mean…umm… Yeah. Beach soccer. Go Fabien!

“First, a sad bit of French soccer news: France was ousted from the Beach Soccer World Cup by Brazil on Saturday. What’s up with that?”

LOL!! :-) Well, c’mon Laurie, you guys can’t beat us IN EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME!! (I know, I know, “who says we can’t” you ask cheekily!). In football, we haven’t been able to beat France since 1958 (1958, PEOPLE!!! — ARGH!!!) so at least we got some little back in beach football.

The beach football world cup is going on Rio right now (or may have just ended) and I’ve watched some of the tournament’s footage on Globo TV (I subscribe). I’ve seen Eric Cantona interviewed briefly on TV a couple of time, he looks great, very relaxed and very happy to be on the beach.

I’ve seen the tournament in person 3 times in Rio and I always marvel at how the players don’t just die of exhaustion after every game. (not to mention how they keep the sand out of their eyes and mouth)

It’s a great tournament and officially sponsored/recognized by FIFA — Cantona’s been involved in the France team for several years now. France did win it once, a few years ago, they always do well in the tournament. I watch the coverage as much as I can, it’s a very relaxed, intimate, casual, fun, inexpensive and unpretentious tourmament — none of the suffocating extravagance and commercialism of FIFA’s major tournaments.
