A few France-related Links
No time for a real post today, but I’d be remiss in my duties if I didn’t point you to some posts you might be interested in.
First, we’re starting Euro coverage over at the Euro ‘08 page of World Cup Blog. I did a quick Thierry Henry profile that included an excellent video from Reebok, where Henry talks about growing up in a rough banlieue outside of Paris. Love Henry or hate him, you need to watch this video. It gives some fascinating insights into some of the factors that made him what he is.
Second, Jen over at From a Left Wing has an interesting translation of an article from “So Foot” magazine. Title: “Zidane, Corporate Robot? From This Month’s ‘So Foot’.” Also extremely interesting.
And last, after I posted the shirt swap photo yesterday, my brain just wouldn’t let it go. The result is this post on what REALLY happened in the shirt swap. Yes, I’m serious. Why would you question me?
Happy reading!

Laurie – I just came across a fantastic documentary ‘Les Yeax Dans les Bleus.” Problem is, I don’t speak French. Do you or any of your readers know where I can find subtitles for it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Merci!

Bryan, alas, I have no clue. Maybe some of my readers can come through for you?

Bryan, Just watch it a bunch of times and you’ll kind of absorb it. I’ve had to do this with any number of French videos. Mind you, there have been a few cases when I finally got the actual translation, and realized that I’d been way off base about what I thought was going on.

Bryan,
Is the video online? I can translate some given places you would like to understand, it’s no problem, if you give me an URL and maybe a general place on the video. Same goes with anything anybody else would be interested in!
Laurie, the Thierry Henry piece is neat. Thank you!
I guess I’m now going to mention a similar piece on Thuram, which really made me appreciate immensely the guy. It’s rather long (30min) and emotional, and not subtitled, but you can understand, I’m sure, a lot of it. We see him in Guadeloupe, where he lived until 9 (his house is no more), then in the French ghetto (where he met is future wife at 9 1/2), and then during his first trip in Africa (celebrated in Togo a few weeks after beating them) ; at least watch at 16:20 the interaction with the kid who tells him Zidane was right to headbutt MM. I think it’s excellent. What a guy, really.

Bryan,
I found “Les Yeux” in DailyMotion, and watched untill part 3 of 9. Wow. lots of stuff! Including profane language from just about everybody. It’s just a massive translating job, but once again, if you want some specific moments, no problem.
I should warn the genral public that some images may not be suitable for everyone – like naked butts (Lizarazu and Petit), so please take note of the end of part 2, just for the sole purpose that the more impressionable people can avoid it!

I have the vhs tape of the documentary….I’ve watched it a few times, love all that locker room stuff…naked butts, yum!

Wow, Doume. Thank you so much for pointing out exactly where those naked butts can be found. For those of us who want to…avoid! Yes! That’s it! Avoid these things!

Well you know, I thought it was my DUTY to let you know
Don’t complain that you haven’t been warned *final notice: part2, 13:30* ! Watch at your own risk.
