Yéle Haiti

Since France’s early exit from the World Cup, French Star and Chelsea Winger Florent Malouda has been doing something extraordinary. The day after France’s loss to South Africa, Florent flew to Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. He has joined up and become an ambassador of Wycelf Jean’s organization, Yéle Haiti, which is trying to help the French-Speaking People of the Island Nation recover from the horrendous earthquake that destroyed almost everything and killed thousands only months ago.

During his stay, he visited many children at the the Jean et Marie Orphanage with Claudinette. There he distributed food and small gifts for the children. More importantly, he brought smiles to the Haitian children.

Yéle Haiti is a foundation started by Grammy-Award winning musician, producer and social entrepreneur Wyclef Jean that is changing lives in this desperately poor but optimistic nation.

Through Yéle Haiti, Wyclef uses music, sports and the media to reinforce projects that are making a difference in education, health, environment and community development. In practical terms this translates to over 3,000 new jobs, close to 7,000 children being put in school, more than 8,000 people a month receiving food and approximately 2,000 young people a month learning about HIV/AIDS prevention.

Here is a video about Malouda’s trip and the 2010 World Cup (French):

I thought I’d post this for many reasons. First of all, this seems like a really great organization, the conditions of Haiti are still awful. Many have forgotten about them since the Media has stopped covering it. I am hoping that writing this post could help Haiti get some attention. They are still very desperate for any help at all. Second, maybe this could help reinforce as to why we support our team and our players, it’s been a rough ride. Thanks for your contributions Florent, we can’t wait to see you play under Laurent Blanc.
