A few France Odds and Ends

February 19th, 2008 | By: Laurie | 6 Comments »

Just a few odds and ends that don’t warrant their own posts.

Zidane fans? I found a fun site devoted to collecting photos of soccer stars, and it has several good Zidane wallpaper photos. Oh, and look! There’s some Thierry Henry ones as well. Enjoy! (I am way too damn old to put one of these on my laptop, but I’m considering it anyway. Think my husband would understand?)

There are also Pippo Inzaghi posters on the site. I’m serious. That I don’t get.

And Julien Escude does an interview saying he’s pretty much definitely staying in La Liga, and at Sevilla. Money quote:

“Sevilla are the best team with whom I have been able to play. Honestly, I don’t think that I will come back to Ligue 1. I have everything that I want here. And I am still under contract for three-and-a-half years, I am 28. Of course Sevilla are not yet Real Madrid or Barcelona, but honestly the lack of media exposure doesn’t bother me. I am going to do a Thuram answer: ‘Everything can happen’. But it’s not going to happen.”

So, alas, looks like we won’t see Julien in Ligue 1 any time soon.

And Franck Ribery is apparently injured again and out for an additional few weeks, probably through the end of the month. Not good. And Willy Sagnol was “rested” against Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup last week. Also not good, especially as Bayern Munich finished with an embarrassing 2-2 draw after Willy himself said that anything short of a win was inconceivable. Ouch.

And don’t forget that most of our boys are playing in Champions League today and tomorrow! I’m rooting for any team with French internationals. And when there are French internationals on both sides, like Lyon vs. Manchester United? It’s all about numbers. Lyon all the way! (Unless they’re sucking. Then I’ll root for Patrice Evra to protect my heart.)

I think I’ll be liveblogging the Lyon-ManU game tomorrow (Wednesday) over on the Offsidemain page, so stop by and say hi.

Marco, you made me laugh. The thought of a francophone Italian blogger still amuses me hugely. :-)

If I’m remembering and reading things correctly, Ricardo Faty has never been called up for France. His brother Jacques has been called up as a youth international, but never as a senior.

(And anyone else can feel free to “corrige moi.”) :-)

Marco, anyway, French is a form of Italian, only very weird :)

Well let’s see what Lyon can come up with, I’m gone all afternoon and night but I’ll send good vibes!

Makalele has been playing really well for Chelsea. He was Chelsea’s best player in the 0-0 draw against Liverpool a week or so ago, and he was the captain for Chelsea in the Champions League against Olympiacos, and again looked like he’s on top of his game, in another 0-0 draw.

Now that I’ve written that, and my evidence that he’s playing well is based on a couple games in which his team didn’t score, I can see that, on the face of it, it doesn’t look too convincing. But, you all know that Makalele plays in the Makalele role, and that means braking up play and 4-yard passes, not creating or scoring goals.

I just re-read my comment from a couple days ago: “braking up play”? Is that a Freudian slip?
