Ballon d’Or Goes to Somebody Who’s Not Henry

November 27th, 2006 | By: Laurie | 14 Comments »

It’s official. The Ballon d’Or goes to Italy’s Cannavaro. (Who I actually like. Even though he’s Italian. Don’t tell anybody.) Yes, he probably deserves it. But so does Thierry Henry, who polled third after Cannavaro and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

As I see it, though, there are three bright sides to the Cannavaro news:

Claire Henry
1. It gives Bob and/or Martha a chance to again show that shirtless-Cannavaro picture they’re so fond of. I think I could tolerate that one more time.
2. The award didn’t go to Gianluigi Buffon. HATE Buffon. (As I have said before, I always thought the rumor that he won this award was just confusion stemming from the Goldmember kit he wore at World Cup.)
3. Look at this picture. When all is said and done, this is what Thierry Henry goes home to at night.

So let’s not shed tears for Titi. His day will come. And, yes, congrats to Cannavaro as one of several who really did deserve it.

I so let you down — if only I had known people besides me wanted to see that image again …

Also, I feel compelled to mention that this weekend I changed my mind about Mexes: I now officially agree with the teens and gay men who find him pretty. I’m ashamed.

Speaking of Mexes, I discovered last week that there are actually some lines I won’t cross for love and blogging.

Yes, I will spend hours wading through and memorizing statistics. And running French google searches. And reading French articles. And digging into rumors about Zizou’s personal life.

However, I could not make myself subscribe to the Philippe Mexes fanzine. Even though it was in English. I just couldn’t make myself do it. It just felt…kind of…rather…creepy.

So readers, if I miss important Philippe Mexes facts, gossip, and compromising photos… Well, I’m sorry. But I discovered that I do have my standards.

O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart! 5
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

FABIO CANNAVARO IL CAPITANO (well known as BERLIN WALL)

What a (rather pleasant) shock to find an Italy fan who can quote Walt Whitman. Or at least Robin Williams. Or at least can google the word “Captain.”

Laurie, it’s more shocking to find an American who can quote Mr Whitman…

Hey!/:) … if Henry is ugly then how about Ronaldinho, Eto’o or Rooney?!? They’re uglyer then crap!(at least rooney has a girl to suit him lol). speakin’ of the ballon d’or Henry is 1st for that award no matter what! cannavaro was weak and sloppy last season he should of been 5th! wearring an armband for italy who won the WC by luckyness doesn’t gives you the right for the award…

So why is it that every time somebody says to me, “Laurie, you should check out THIS footballer’s wife,” like a robot I automatically find myself going to Google. And then I find myself looking at yet another huge set of silicone pillows with skin stretched across them. And thinking, “You know, this really doesn’t interest me all that much.”

Must work on my OWN impulse control issues.

But guys, if that kind of thing interests YOU, I will say that the silicone pillows are huge. So feel free to Google them yourself.

What about Miro Klose for Werder Bremen? Right now he’s the hottest scorer in Europe and he’s on everyone’s shopping list.

For some reason it seems that “playing in Germany” is synonymous with “off the radar screen” when it comes to international awards. Don’t know why that is.
