France Greece Team Updates

Okay, so here’s the post where I’m supposed to introduce all the Greek players, and, like, analyze them vs. our guys and stuff.

Except they’re not French. So I don’t care.

If you do care, I’ll list the Greek players the end of this post. But first some quick team updates for France fans: Sébastien Squillaci was called up on Sunday. Govou and Benzema are both out with injuries. (I need to trot back to the Olympique Lyonnais site for details, but I think one was hamstring and the other quadricep??) And in case you’ve been living in a cave (or worse, not following this blog), Gonzalo Higuain has turned down the opportunity to play for Les Bleus, at least this time around. (I did have my doubts about that whole thinking yourself French thing.)

Okay. That’s it for the moment, so here’s that Greece lineup. If you want to do your own analysis, enjoy!

Goalkeepers:
Antonios Nikopolidis (Olympiakos)
Konstantinos Chalkias (Aris Salonique)

Defenders:
Georgios Seitaridis (Atletico Madrid)
Panagiotis Fyssas (Hearts of Midlothian)
Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Eintracht Francfort)
Georgios Anatolakis (Olympiakos)
Ioannis Goumas (Panathinaïkos)
Traianos Dellas (AEK Athènes)

Midfielders:
Stylianos Giannakopoulos (Bolton)
Angelos Bassinas (Majorque)
Ioannis Amanatidis (Eintracht Francfort)
Georgios Karagounis (Benfica)
Konstantinos Katsouranis (Benfica)
Panagiotis Lagos (AEK Athènes)
Alexandros Tziolis (Panathinaïkos)
Pantelis Kafes (Olympiakos)

Forwards:
Georgios Samaras (Manchester City)
Theofoanis Gekas (Bochum)
Dimitrios Salpigidis (Panathinaïkos)
Dimitrios Papadopoulos (Panathinaïkos)
Nikolaos Lymperopoulos (AEK Athènes)

Hey Laurie, looking forward to a great game. As to the Trezeguet rumour, here’s how it goes. It’s french tradition to spread hearsay about every french player coming back to Ligue 1. They did it with Zidane, and they’re doing it with Henry. Trezeguet’s may be more substantial, true, due to the club he plays for and his dwindling play of late. I wouldn’t count on him going to Lyon in the next few years, but if he did, I’d suspect he’d start every other game, if Lyon’s other attackers could stay healthy longer than eight seconds.

I’ve….never heard a single name from that list.

Er..cheers to the Greeks still. I want one those ‘cracking’ games the BBC always keeps shouting about.

Or they could end up owning us like last time. *shifty-eyes*

Thanks, Sam. I don’t think the move would be a great thing for Trezeguet either. Sure, they need strikers NOW, but once everybody’s healthy he’s on the bench. Lyon is too packed with talent.
