François Clerc’s First L1 Goal
This is technically Inara’s area, not mine, but it made me happy so I thought I’d share.
How many times have Lyon and France NT fans seen François Clerc make a beautiful run up that right side and then shoot just to the right, or just to the left, or just over the top? And you think, “It’s a confidence thing. He just needs to score one in a competitive match and the floodgates will open.
Well, guess what? He scored his first Ligue 1 goal today, off a sweet, unselfish little backheel from Milan Baros. Here’s the video. And check out this photo (stolen from Inara.) He looks happy enough to cry. And that makes me go all warm and maternally happy.
You go, Francois!

So so so many times with France NT. Especially the last Ukraine game when he had the ball completely alone top of the box and just sky-ed it. Also good the see Benzema continue to score his essentially trademark goal.

Funny thing — I was checking a few things on Francois’ Wikipedia page last night while I was writing this and decided to update it to include the goal. Then I checked his French Wiki page and somebody there had done the same thing — same wording, even. Guess I wasn’t the only one it made an impression on.

It was really cute how excited the other players were for Clerc. It reminded me of last year’s match against Sedan, when Ben Arfa scored his first league goal.

P.S. I never noticed till today what a very French nose Clerc has.

I saw this terrific game! Congrats, Le Clerc! Let’s hope you, Benzema and Ben Arfa shine in 2008!
