Happy Birthday, Fabien Barthez!

June 29th, 2007 | By: Laurie | 9 Comments »

Did you know that former Bleus goalkeeper Fabien Barthez shares a birthday with former Denver Broncos’ dual-Super Bowl winning quarterback John Elway? Okay, it’s probably not significant for you, but since I’m from Denver and remember not only both Super Bowl wins but all the Elway losses… Well, let’s just say that both Fabien and John cause strong emotions to well up inside me.

Our string of June French footballing birthdays continues, with Fabien turning 36 today, June 28. (What exactly does France put in the water in September-October to result in these guys’ births nine months later? Enquiring minds want to know!)

That Fabien-to-Mexico rumor seems to have been a hoax, but never count this guy out. He may yet play again. I mean, look at Vikash Dhorasoo.

Oh, wait, that’s tomorrow’s post.

Happy Birthday, Fabien! Love you oodles. But I still don’t want you playing for my team. Because you scare me.

P.S. Don’t you love the photo? It’s from Euro 2000 1992.

Alas, I still care. In spite of myself.

Fabien Barthez still has the ability to inspire strong emotions in me. His on- and off-field antics made me laugh (suspensions for recreational cannabis use and spitting at a referee??) and made me cry (Fabien! Sweetie! CATCH the ball!! CATCH the freakin’ BALL!!!!), and my soccer-loving heart will never be the same because of him.

Good for you laurie, keep these birthday posts coming! Ah dear Fabien…he of the kissable bald head! I do miss his endearing way of pulling up those shorts…let’s remember that he was a very fine keeper in his day and made some incredible saves. Can’t see him in Mexico! Enjoy your b’day, Fabs.

Laurie,
Great photo! But it’s not from Euro 2000. It’s from 1992 according to the caption on the link you provided.

1992 sounds more like it. I thought he was bald by 2002. Must have read the accompanying article wrong. I’ll go in and fix it. Thanks!

After his depature from Nantes, do you think he will retire?

Julien, from what I read, he doesn’t really want to retire, but he only wants to play either in France or in a big European club. And with the baggage he’s carrying, nobody’s making an offer.

I would be surprised to see him between the posts again, but stranger things have happened.

You gotta love a man with a bald head, wearing short shorts, while sporting a fruity little moustache. The way he prances around the pitch is graceful in nature with a hint of sensetivity. I’d say barthez isnt doing much good for french streotypes. But I guess since he smokes weed hes alright in my books.
