Here’s Why Coupet Is #1

May 27th, 2007 | By: Laurie | 5 Comments »

I’m in the process of writing up a post on Jimmy Briand and translating an interesting article from Senegal on Bakary Sagna. Both are taking time, though, so in the meantime I thought I’d share a fun video of Grégory Coupet that I found on the website Only Goalkeeping. (Warning, though. He also includes a lot of Buffon posts. So enter with care. :::Shudder::: HATE Buffon.)

This video shows one of the reasons that Grégory Coupet is Domenech’s #1 choice.

And I’d also like to hear anyone else’s thoughts as to why he called up three goalkeepers this time around. What do you think? Any chance Frey will get his first cap? And what about Landreau, who in my opinion is THE reason PSG wasn’t relegated this year? And why three goalkeepers but only seven defenders (of course leaving out my beloved Patrice Evra)?

But anyhoo. Enjoy the video.

Because Raymond Domench is an absolute moron? :)

Honestly though it sounds like maybe he wants to make a decision about who his future keepers will be regarding Landreau and Frey. I haven’t seen much of the former, but I’ve seen plenty of Frey and I have been astounded by his reflexes this year. He has been getting to balls he has no business getting to. Maybe Domenech saw the same thing.

Nice musical selection on that video.

Would you believe I’ve only seen Frey play a couple of times? But he did look good.

I’m hoping calling up both isn’t Raymond’s message to Coupet that his days are numbered. After the way Coupet was treated in World Cup, Raymond OWES him at least Euro 08.

Sorry, I meant future backup. Though Coupet is getting on in years and who knows how long he will stick around.

I understood what you were saying. My concern is that by calling up not one but two backups, Raymond is sending a message to Coupet. It’s one thing to have one replacement ready to go. It’s another to have a replacement for the replacement, especially in goal!

As you may know, I’m not the biggest advocate of Domenech’s ability to pick a squad. How do you justify picking 3 keepers and leaving out Mexes? But maybe Domenech really just doesn’t like Coupet (hard not to, he’s phenomenal).

I’m going to bring this from out of nowhere, but remember Coupet mentioning he would think about MLS in the near future? Maybe this is Domenech’s way of saying, ‘If you do, we’re all set.’ Sort of a warning?

As for Frey, I just looked at the final Serie A table. Fiorentina had the least goals conceded with 31 and their back four is nothing to write home about. Quite an impressive season from him.
