Its Official: Henry joins MLS NY Red Bulls

Henry joins MLS NY Red Bulls

Not exactly a surprise at this point as this rumor is almost as old (and annoying) as Fabregas to Barcelona.  Though, when you prepare your (unfounded and uninformed) MLS insults, keep in mind that it still has more class than the Barcelona players who ambushed Cesc into wearing a Barcelona shirt (video here).

As a New Yorker myself,I’m excited to have more opportunities to see Henry play.  He may not run as fast or score as many goals at this point, but I believe that this move will be beneficial for both Henry, the Red Bulls and MLS.  Henry clearly lost his spirit the past year in Barcelona (even Guardiola commented)-I hope he can find some rejuvenation in NYC. And I hope NYC fans will give him a chance to find his feet and re-find the champion that made him such a success at Arsenal.

New Yorkers are also excited over the rumor that Henry's Barcelona teammate Marquez may soon be joining him at the Red Bulls..

“keep in mind that it still has more class than the Barcelona players who ambushed Cesc into wearing a Barcelona shirt” – thanks for that, Sarah! Like most gooners, I'm thoroughly sick of Barca, and I've been a longtime admirer of theirs.

I too look forward to seeing Henry play. As a gooner, of course I can't miss the Spurs game! :-)

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Jeff

I really hope he does well. I don't normally watch MLS, but I'd consider driving 4 hours to watch him play if his form was good, and I'll watch his matches on TV if his form is decent.

Will the hype be Beckham-style (sincere effort at hype) or Djorkaeff-style (marketers unbothered).

  • James

I'm thoroughly psyched! Up until this moment, I've had no interest in MLS and now I'm even thinking about buying a jersey! I think this is just what Henry needs, and hopefully, he'll get his confidence back which still seems to be missing in the Red Bull interview. I don't think he'll start out in top form, but by the end of the season, I think we'll be seeing the Henry of old. Who knows, maybe he'll get his spot back on the national team and we'll see him in the 2012 Euros, going out in style. Joyeuse Fête Nationale, everyone. What exciting news for Bastille Day!

  • Aditya

Boo Henry. You should have joined Seattle Sounders. Ljunberg, Henry and the Arsenal connection!

NYRB is definitely going to be my 2nd team.

If he had made the Sounders move LAST YEAR as was rumored, he would have carried a whole lot more 'street-cred' to the MLS than he will now.

  • ThomasSessegnon

Yes, and then, most importantly, I would be able to watch him this season.

  • James

I think the sell for Henry was living in NYC.

  • http://france.worldcupblog.org Jeff

So forgot about street-cred. Assume he has none. If he plays at 80% of his former peak form, he'll be a huge star on the merits of this new chapter.

  • johnjohn10

It's great news for the mls and Henry. He'll love new york and be able to rehabilitate his reputation after the battering he took for his hand ball.

Can't wait to see him play…… Hope the Irish in NY take it easy on him.

  • sandra350

That's why he chose the Red Bulls, it was never going to be any other team. He's had a longtime love affair with NYC, he's visited the city many times.

  • Paige

This is great news all around – it'll be wonderful for the MLS (& NY in particular), and I have a feeling Henry will thrive in NYC. Only problem is I can't decide which game to go to, Spurs or Man City!

Im a France fan and I live in NY…best of all possible worlds.

    Henry + Angel = dynamite!

  • Aditya

Come on! All the Seattle rain would have reminded him of his Arsenal days and he would be god-like again culminating in an appearance in 2014 World Cup final.

  • Jani

I tried to get the new Henry NYRB shirt, but it turned out that they don't ship to Slovenia.
