Journey to the 2010 World Cup: First Stop, Spain

119

South Africa is now less than four months away (opening game is June 11th) and while most countries have arguably been preparing for this tournament for 4 years- Raymond Domenech has declared that his preparation will really start next Wednesday when France play Spain. Our approach to qualification makes so much more sense now…

But, sarcasm aside, I’m really excited about the kick-off of the international friendlies that France scheduled to prepare for this summer’s competition. Domenech will name his squad to face Spain tomorrow (Thursday, 2/25) and I’m anticipating (or maybe just hoping) there will be some surprises in his list.

The players we know will be absent are Gignac (hamstring), Abidal (hamstring), Gallas (calf), Squillaci (ankle), Alou Diarra (thigh) and Benzema (groin). The players who are still question marks are Ribery (left foot) and Diaby (knee)- they could be called up, but they are both still struggling to recover from prior injuries.

When asked about France’s injured players, Domenech replied that

They have the right to be hurt, I’ve told them that! What matters is that they are all present for the World Cup.”

We have already discussed Patrick Viera returning to the squad- but some younger players have also demonstrated that they may have what it takes to replace veteran players on the team. On top of that, several players are struggling with injuries and poor form- so Domenech has the perfect opportunity to see how some new players could enhance the team…

Sarah’s Player’s to Watch

25_patrick__vieiraPatrick Vieira: Domenech has already announced that if Patrick goes, he will be the captain of France. It seems a little strange to me that the possible team captain is doubtful- shouldn’t they be one of the most consistent players on the field? Henry has supported Patrick inclusion since he returned from injury, but he has only played a handful of matches for Manchester City. And, he has already been banned for three games for kicking out at a Stoke City Player. With two Diarra’s (Alou and Lass) as well as Toulalan all fighting for this position- I doubt Patrick will be called up for this game…we are only allowed 11 players on the field- do we really want two of them to be old, out of shape and not consistently playing good football?

Louis Saha: Louis has managed to bounce back from years of chronic injuries to being the 5th most prolific scorer in the EPL. He has scored 15 goals in 30 games this season. He hasn’t been called up since November 2006 and he might be considered too unreliable, old and injury prone to be considered a serious contender (for South Africa) when France already have Benzema, Henry, Gignac and Anelka on the roster…

Louis-Saha-001cisse-baby

Djibril Cisse: Djibril’s situation is similar to Saha’s– but he plays in a much less competitive league (Greece). Though he has been playing well…he has a fiery personality, which is the last thing France needs at this point.

311009PNO07Hatem Ben Arfa: France’s midfield is extremely competitive with Gourcuff, Malouda, Diarra (Alou), Diarra (Lass), Gouvou, Nasri, Sissoko (Moussa), Toulalan, Ribery etc…is there room for him? Maybe..maybe not, but he’s definitely putting his best foot forward in an attempt to make Domenech’s choice more difficult. He had a horrible start to the season- barely getting any minutes. Since 2010, he has really demonstrated that he is capable of being the player that everyone thought he could be. Domenech has noticed his recent improvement, and remarked that, “He is someone who is a genius. The day he starts to stabilize and consistently repeat his performance, [his talent] will be indisputable in any team in the world, since he is no less talented than Cristiano Ronaldo. ”

Historically France and Spain are evenly matched sides, with France winning 11 and drawing 6 of the 29 matches between the two countries. matches from the 29 meetings between the sides. France won the last encounter in Paris prior to the 1998 World Cup- which France later won.

    michael ciani
    kevin gameiro
    benoit tremoulinas
    yohan cabaye

Sarah: Thanks for the funny and insightful post. Wow! “Talented as Ronaldo?” That’s quite a mouthful! It makes me hopeful and then…. I consider the source. Oh, well. We can still dream, can’t we?

  • Jao

Agree with Michel-Olivier on Trech and Gameiro. They should be shoe-ins with all the injuries and such. Another to watch out for is Yann M’Vila. Wouldn’t be surprised if Domenech calls him up.

I think it’s going to be 25 players, so might be a few new faces. I really really hope so.

With all the midfield talent out there, there would have to be a lot of injuries to the starters for Ben Arfa to be able to squeeze in there…

  • Jao

    Ben Arfa’s in. Cheyrou too.

  • Sarah

I actually had Cheyrou as my #5 player to watch originally, but I didn’t want the list to become too OM-centric (since HBA currently plays there and Cisse did play there). I try to keep my club politics separate from the National Team blog. Im thrilled about Cheyrou– he is always one of my players to watch, but I just assumed that if Domenech hadn’t noticed his talent yet then he probably never would…same with Ciani and Rami.

Exciting! I actually think this list is more reflective of players who are actually playing well right now– as opposed to the “oldies but goodies” list we normally get (Benzema, Henry etc). Don’t get me wrong, I think think both of those players are great- but they haven’t exactly been their best in over a year.

  • Sarah

    The team

Goaltenders: Cedric Carrasso (Bordeaux), Hugo Lloris (Lyon), Steve Mandanda (Marseille)

Defenders: Aly Cissokho (Lyon), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Julien Escude (Sevilla), Rod Fanni (Rennes), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal), Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon), Michael Ciani (Bordeaux), Adil Rami (Lille)

Midfielders: Lassana Diarra (Real Madrid), Yoann Gourcuff (Bordeaux), Moussa Sissoko (Toulouse), Jeremy Toulalan (Lyon), Benoit Cheyrou (Marseille)

Forwards: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea), Sidney Govou (Lyon), Thierry Henry (Barcelona), Florent Malouda (Chelsea), Loc Remy (Nice), Hatem Ben Arfa (Marseille), Franck Ribéry (Bayern Munich), Louis Saha (Everton)

    Ciani! Yes!!!

Alo, Ben Arfa? I thought he’d burned his bridges but good. And Saha’s back? And no Benzema or Nasri?

    Wow.

  • Sarah

Laurie: Benzema is injured and Nasri is still recovering from his injuries (broken leg). I dont think he is playing full games yet for Arsenal. HBA has been on a roll since 2010 and has scored a couple of goals just in the last few games for OM- as well as providing a couple of assists.

  • princedesparcs

Nasri played very well for 73 minutes on Saturday, and has played much more than Ribery of late, so I don’t think injury’s the reason he’s not included. Then again, maybe he’s a lock and Dom wanted to look at HBA Remy, etc …

  • http://france.theoffside.com/ Thomas

hmm, I want to see a formation like this:

    Lloris
    Sagna-Ciani-Rami-Cissokho
    Toulalan-Cheyrou
    Ribery———-Malouda
    Anelka-Saha

Based on current form, this is what I want to see.

  • Sarah

He is going to play Henry….

  • Alex

It’s great to see Saha back in the line up. He’s been playing extremely well at Everton recently. I’d love to see that line up Thomas proposed. Also, it’s interesting to see that Vieira did not get called up. Is he really going to captain this team if he does not get capped regularly?

  • http://www.adidas.fr/om Justin C.

I’m so happy that the regularly-overlooked Cheyrou is finally getting a call-up, even for a friendly.

At least he’s now been given the opportunity to prove himself for better or worse. If he shines and maintains a high level of play, he could be captain one day…

  • Jean-François

I really hope that Domenech can give Saha and Ben Arfa some playing time. Henry must start in my opinion, I still think he can roll back the years, we’ll see.

    Jean-François:
Saha is out. Djibril Cissé is in. I hope he gets some playing time.
