River Plate Should be Kissing Domenech’s Boots
It’s kind of a given that, in general, clubs hate Raymond Domenech.
The one current exception to this rule is River Plate, Argentina. They are (or should be) at this moment kissing Domenech’s boots for getting the Gonzalo Higuain hype machine going less than two months before the January transfer window.
The news reports (scroll down past the Marseille article) are that River Plate has just rejected 10 million Euros from Real Madrid for Higuain. “We’re not satisfied with the price nor the idea of handing over the player at the end of the year,” River Plate secretary Mario Israel told Reuters on Sunday.”
Although Israel also said, “Higuaín is only just 18 and still has to grow up. Real Madrid understood that. We’ve got a lot of games to play and we want him to stay at River at least until June 2007,” River Plate has to know that the time to sell is when you have a buyer willing to fork over the cash. Who knows where he’ll be in 2007?
Truly, if it weren’t for Domenech’s France call-up for the France-Greece game (and Gonzalo’s rejection of it,) would the world have heard of this kid?
Nice of Domenech to line their pockets, eh?

I think pretty much everyone who follows South America soccer knows who he is; and subsequently, so do the big teams in Europe.
Don’t forget, when Ronaldinho, Kaka and all moved from Brazil, not many people know who they were initially…

Skywalker, I wasn’t trying to say that nobody had heard of him before France called him up. (Although…hmm…rereading this, I did actually say that, didn’t I?? My bad.)
What I meant was more that when you’re dealing with an unknown quantity (which all eighteen-year-olds basically are,) and you want to get a lot of money, it helps to have a lot of hype and headlines.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the events of the last couple of weeks added a third to his asking price.
