Zidane Champions League Goal Voted Best of all Time

May 4th, 2007 | By: Laurie | 14 Comments »

From the Evening Times:

Leading pundits from across the UK were asked to compile a top 50 Champions League goals for a TV special this week.

And Zizou’s goal that gave Real Madrid a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in 2002 was rated the finest ever seen in the world’s top club tournament.

The Frenchman’s turn and rifled shot with his weaker left foot started the party for thousands of travelling fans in Glasgow’s South Side on a memorable night.

I don’t have much to add to this except: Watch the video!

Oh, and one more thing: I miss Zidane.

“Oh, and one more thing: I miss Zidane.”

Any fan of beautiful football fan does, Laurie. Even with him not playing at his best anymore last year, it still felt “right” to be able to watch him play at all. Football’s just not the same without him.

Re the photo posted. I’ve noticed in photos taken of Zidane mid-game, how remarkably elegant his playing style is, that you can even see it in photo stills.

It’s so obvious that the French NT is crawling along without him. Despite the copious amounts of midfield talent that France produces on a daily basis, I don’t think there will ever be anyone like Zizou.

I think you’re right up to a point, Inara — but remember that France played brilliantly against Italy last September, scoring 3 goals, all without zizou. I think France will manage to find their groove without zizou ultimately.

The article wasn’t actually written in March, but May 3. (03/05/07 in Europe and most of the world is May 3)

Ach, of course you’re right!!! I forgot to check the location of the article!! This is the problem with writing two different blogs in locations that do their calendars differently. When this was the only blog I wrote, I would never have made this mistake. (But I’m still always glad when we hit the 13th day of the month, because then I can stop thinking.) :-)

In my defense, though, I am still getting stuff from World Cup in my mailbox at least twice a month.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: Zidane is the greatest and noone needs to worry. Before he retired after the beautiful headbutt and winning the FIFA Golden Ball Award for the best performance, he left the rookie to fill his shoes. Like Zidane, Frank (Billal) Ribbery is fast, tricky, elegant, smart and a great leader. Hopefully he can help the french team to continue their years of glory. Zidane was rated the third best of all time, after Pele and Maradona, in 2006. He was a treasure for both Madrid and France. Zizou est le meiller. He is not french but Algerian, but is the key to french victory. Zidane you are the greatest footballer, and i hope that ribbery can fill your shoes

[...] It wasn’t meant to be for Bayer Leverkusen back in 2002. Instead of winning their first ever Bundesliga and Champions League title, it was Neverkusen all over again. They choked in the league (as always) and were denied by Zinedine Zidane in the Champions League final. May it serve as consolation, that it wasn’t some unlucky fluke goal, but in fact the best one ever scored in this competition. [...]
