‘Big Boy’ Raymond Domenech

caricature-raymond-domenech-L-1

In response to rumors that the FFF may send a few babysitters with Raymond to the World Cup, the FFF President has issued a soft denial- stating that this approach is unnecessary since Domenech is a “big boy.” He goes on to explain that the “big boy” is building something positive with the team and he doesn’t need any additional assistance He also makes some smarter arguments regarding the possible confusion this would cause to the players when given three different pairs of instructions. He also implied that Houiller (who was mentioned as a possible Sporting Director) wouldn’t change a thing at the club- he and Domenech chat frequently since their offices are on the same floor at the FFF.

To our fluent French-speaking commenters: In English, I think it is fair to say that “big boy” is only appropriate in two contexts. When speaking to/praising a small child and when attempting very cheesy pillow talk. If said outside of those two contexts, it would be interpreted as pretty condescending. Is this the same in French?

One never has the sense, as with Capello’s England, that it is an honour and privelege to wear the NT uniform.

Too many of Ray’s selections are automatic rather than earned …

… which perversely enough reflects perfectly the seemingly sclerotic internal politics of the FFF itself.

Oops, I think I meant “privilege”

in French, that might be perceived as a little less condescending.

re: deserving as opposed to prestige selection, is it fair to say that you would like all of the players who played against Ireland to be benched?

Even in the contexts mentioned, it usually sounds condescending. When someone clearly is a big boy, it bears no mentioning. It’s only when there’s an element of doubt that it even comes up.
