Call Ups for Sweden-France
Les Bleus will be traveling to Sweden for a friendly on August 20th, a game which will hopefully get the team ready for the World Cup qualifiers that will be starting soon.
There a lot of old faces on the squad, but there are also some players missing, including Franck Ribery and Francois Clerc, who are out injured, and Samir Nasri and Eric Abidal, who were dropped entirely. There is also no one named David Trezeguet on the list.
There are some new faces in the squad, such as Rod Fanni of Rennes (whom I don’t really know much about) and Yoann Gourcuff, the original “new Zidane.” Gourcuff’s presence is especially exciting because for many, he might be the playmaker that France have been looking for.
This game is also a good opportunity for the fringe players to prove themselves. Bakary Sagna, Hatem Ben Arfa, Gael Clichy, Mathieu Flamini, and Hugo Lloris have been handed lifelines, so it’ll be interesting to see how they take their chances.
Full list after the jump.

I don’t understand how Domenech thinks. Yeah, he brought back Mexes and Flamini, which is a good start. But how did he drop Nasri?

I’m pretty sure that Nasri’s out with a knee injury, reported August 11 …
There’s an interview with Fanni on the FFF site for those who can read French (I can’t, well not really) …

… according to the WickedDeflection site Arsene Wenger said Nasri might be be fit for the Arsenal Prem-Leauge opener on Saturday. My guess is that his absence in the line-up for Sweden is a “precautionary” one.
I mean Domenech’s not that dumb, and it looks like he’s now got this gentleman to keep him in line. Any bets that he might be Domenech’s likely successor:

Yeah, good question … Frey has stated publicly that for him France comes second to Fiorentina … I’m guessing he wanted Domenech to commit to him as the number 1 goalkeeper.
I don’t know … he’s not old … anyway, the Italians love him, so maybe that’s why Domenech left him out of the side!!
My guess is we’ll see him start in the qualifiers, I can’t believe Domenech would open with Mandanda (1 cap) or Lhoris (no caps) … maybe not starting him in a friendly is Domenech’s new kinder/gentler, more respectful way of dealing with players & clubs–and the Sweden friendly (Aug. 20) comes right in the middle of Fiorentina’s Champions League qualifiers against Slavia Prague today and on the 27th.

I wouldn’t worry about the goalkeeper situation. Frey, Lloris and Mandanda are all keepers of the highest caliber.

madanda is shit.
watch out for yohann thuram-ulien(lilian cousin)

Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon)
Lassana Diarra (Portsmouth)
Florent Malouda (Chelsea)
Are guys I think have been on one too many lists. Kinda wish Lassana would step his game up but so would Portsmouth fans. He sucked in the Community shield showdown with Man U.

To his credit, I think that Malouda appeared decent in preseason and well, Diarra is Domenech’s meilleur ami these days, though I’d much rather see Bodmer than Boumsong. I know Boumsong hasn’t been bad, though I get this horrible feeling that Domenech will take a liking to him and then he’ll turn into a chuckle brother at the worst moment.
And Michel-Olivier, I know you like the Thurams, though a bunch of my ASM buddies have seen Yohann Thuram in CFA action, and while not out of the question, not many think he’ll be better than Mandanda.
I’m hoping Clichy will get the opportunity to prove himself on the left side.

Is Nasri dropped because of Domenech’s shortsightedness or because of his knee injury? I really hope, for Domenech’s sake, that it’s the latter.
But apparently, the scare of losing his job is good enough for Domenech to start bringing in young talents–especially awesome to see Gourcuff in blue again (he looks especially cute in a French jersey–but then again, he looks good in everything!). But would these new blood be good enough to replace the experience of the retired players? Makelele, Viera and Thuram are one-of-a-kinds that are hard to replace…

I think Abidal is suspended for the first qualifier because of his red card against Italy. We may still see him starting at left-back in the second qualifier, instead of Evra or Clichy, who everyone agrees are superior selections—at least offensively (and God knows, France needs some of that). Evra may be the best balanced of the three …
I don’t know how much faith to put in this, but Mad Dom is quoted in the UK press as saying that Makelele was not necessarily out of the question, even though he announced his international retirement again:
“I am letting him get himself sorted [at PSG] … we will see. It isn’t because he is 42 [Makelele is 35] that he is finished. Like all the others, it depends on your level of play, whether you are 42 or 18.”
My reading is that he still has faith in Malouda; and insists that Coupet still has a future with the team … though such talk may be meaningless.
I think we should be careful from concluding that the selections for the Sweden friendly represent Domenech’s thinking on what constitutes his best team (or whether he even has sole authority in making such selections anymore) …

Mandanda and Lloris are not really good keepers

Hope that Nasri is dropped out because of his knee injury

Mandanda and Lloris aren’t good keepers? Are there any two keepers under 23 who’d be better? The two Germans, Adler and Neuer, are in the same ballpark, but other than they, I can’t think of anyone else.
Regardless of how he’s doing (and he’d done well I hear in some of the preseason friendlies), Nasri wasn’t going to be included anyway because Domenech is trying to experiment with Gourcuff.
Keep in mind, folks, it’s a friendly and it’s a 20-man list. It may not be that indicative of what Domenech has in mind, but he knows that he has to do well against Sweden, since if not, the outcry over his non-firing will grow much louder.

But where is Frey

It looks like Frey’s about to announce his international retirement (and that he will blame … well, you know who):
http://sport.france2.fr/football/france/45602890-fr.php
For what its worth, and according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Platini is supposed to have told Domenceh two weeks ago (after seeing Fiorentina’s 3-1 ‘friendly’ defeat of Barcelona) that he thinks Domenech should make Frey his number 1 goalkeeper.

lol@dummy domenech
leaving Frey go
thierry henry is not retiring -yet-? and why is nasri not playing in this game- dropped out or knee injury? and why doesn’t domenech not learn from his faults, and call up Trezeguet? not that he would ever play for domenech, though

Bad Boy Wiltord is linked to my Bulls Inara. Great news for the women of New York if he does (you know his history). Anyway, just FYI.

Frey is not on the list since the Italian league has yet to start, and that is the reason Domenech did not call him up.
But does someone want to explain why Boumsong and Govou are on the list once again??? Are they really going to be the corner stone of Les Bleus for the World Cup????

Nasri’s going to replace the injured Ben Arfa in the NT lineup:
http://www.fff.fr/bleus/456412.shtml
I saw the Arsenal game on Saturday: Clichy, Sagna and especially Nasri, who scored the only goal, in his EPL debut, all did well; Gallas was OK. Nasri didn’t appear troubled by his reported injury earlier in the week.

@ Guy
so what you mean is….
Henry, Flamini, and Mexes is in the list since the italian and spanish league has yet to start, and that is the reason Domenech did call them.

That’s well put, Michel-Olivier. I agree with all those who think Domenech should have picked Frey, even if we have 3 goalkeepers right now who are all of the highest caliber.

Mandanda and Lloris are good young goalkeepers, but Frey is on a different level. Frey is already one of the best keepers in the world and i honestly rate him on par or close to Casillas,Buffon,Cech.
He has been out of this world for Fiorentina these past couple of seasons.
