Friendly with Uruguay Scheduled for November

January 16th, 2008 | By: Laurie | 2 Comments »

And you thought November was going to be dark and dreary.

It just got a little less so for France fans with the announcement that les Bleus will be playing a friendly against Uruguay on November 19. Stade de France at 21h00.

Uruguay is currently ranked 28th in the FIFA rankings. Anybody in the top 30 can make things happen, so this could be a good game.

It will take place in the middle of World Cup qualifiying and should give Raymond a chance to tweak a few things before everything heats up again in ‘09.

Uruguay play fantastic football, they give Brazil and Argentina trouble all the time. Brazil got to the final of the Copa America (and won it) last summer only because they won a controversial penalty shootout in the semifinal v. Uruguay. And Uruguay were the better team. Disregard the ranking, they’re not a pushover. They have very talented players. And they did win the wc twice (once in Brazil in 1950, on a day that we Brazilians call our “national nightmare” — the shock resulted in the national team completely changing their kit colors from all white to green&yellow).

In terms of watching good attacking footballing with flair, Uruguay v. France is just as mouthwatering as France v. Brazil or France v. Argentina.

I’ll be looking forward to this one. France’s style has so much latino influence, and given how France have been free scoring as of late (and also free-conceding), it should be a fun game.
