Euro 2016: France

It’s now official, France will host the Euro 2016 Competition! Today in Geneva, Switzerland a vote was taken between the three candidates (France, Turkey, and Italy). This is very significant for many reasons. First of all, this will be the first competition that will have 24 teams participate in the finals. Second, last time France hosted the Euro competition, France won it!

Apparently Italy fell behind very early during the vote. Which is surprising to me, I was half-expecting them to win. The vote between Turkey and France was very tight. Luckily we had Michel Platini, the President of UEFA. He lifted the trophy for France, in France in 1894. He must of had a very difficult time because his family is Italian and he has connections with Turkey. The final vote was 7 for France and 6 for Turkey. Most of the pundits linked Turkey with the win, so I suppose this is an upset. In my opinion, its a huge win for France. Not only will us French fans get to see our team on home soil, our stadiums will be getting some attention too!

Do you think France should have won the bid? Will France win the competition?

Great win for France and I think a much need revamp of the stadiums. I think that France won the bid over Turkey due to the fact the tournament is expanding from 16 to 24 teams which makes the tournament much more along the lines of the World Cup. I am sure that some voters feared that Turkey, as a first time host, would be under the gun – first time host and first Euro with 24 teams. As for whether Les Bleus can win it, who knows what the team will look like.

From the current roster only Gourcuff who will be 29, Diaby 30, Valbuena 31, Gignac 30 and Lloris 29 will most likely be there, this could be a good core. Players like Sissoko, Benzema, Ben Arfa, Nasri, Cissokho and M'Vila could make that a good pool. The question remains how will these players develop and how will they do over the next 2 tournaments post South Africa? Should be fun to watch!

Many stadiums in France are already of a high standard. In fact, there's nothing wrong with most of them but it just sounds good when making a bid and you make the solid promise to “upgrade” the stadiums. In reality, France could host any football tournament tomorrow if they had to.

France won the Euro in 84 when it was also held in France. That side, in my mind, was the greatest French side ever which contained one world-class player after the other. I wonder if the side France has in 2016 will be able to emulate that.
